We're getting too wussified. That's the problem. Rivalries are no more bitter or intense than before. In fact, they're probably not even as intense as they used to be. People just need their safe spaces now more than ever. Now, granted, when it comes to the temperature of a rivalry this one was perhaps more intense than pretty much all but two or three, but still.
Wanting to end a rivalry because it's too intense is like wanting to get rid of a comedian because it's too funny, or not wanting to watch a horror movie because it's too scary, or not wanting to watch a porno because it's too....well, I digress.
Rivalries are supposed to be intense. It's exactly what you want a rivalry to be. Now, you're not supposed to punch people during a basketball game, and to be fair BYU was making a habit of that, but still. Basketball is better with these rivalries. Rivalry games should be a selling point. Any real competitor would be intrigued by them. Yet, schools are getting rid of them because they're too intense. Or, schools try and say that there's nothing to gain by playing them. Yeah. BYU and Utah get nothing out of that rivalry. No one cares, and the game has clearly held both programs back for years. That makes sense.
