View Full Version : Huggins freaks out on player for T

At the end of the WVU-TCU game, a WVU player had a fast break dunk and kind of did a Larry Austin Jr shake the rim after the dunk thing and got T'd up. Huggins loses it and I swear if I read his lips right, it was "I'm gonna fu@% you up!! God da#@ you!!!" Then he looks at the ref and says, "That's bullsh**."
I wish I could find a way to embed the ESPN video clip. It was pretty epic.
Was he channeling Woody Hayes?

I've seen an increase by XU this year in hanging on the rim (at least 3 times in the Butler game). Very surprised we have not been T'ed up. I really wish Mack would clean that up before it hurts in a key situation.

I hate that rule. I think it is stupid. Some refs call it and others dont. Its also a lot harder than most people realize to not hang on the rim and control your momentum if you are dunking at full speed.

Jalen got T'd up for hanging on the rim in the Michigan game, I believe.

When they showed the replay, the player did kind of pulled himself up a bit...like a small pull up. Stupid rule but still a no-no.

Because he touched the ball after the miss while still on rim. Auto T.

On one Jalen dunk in the Butler game, he hung for longer than I thought was necessary on first glance. After the replay, though, a player was directly underneath him when he took off. The player had gotten up by the time he dunked it, but I don't think Jalen could see that.

That's wasn't last night. That was their previous game against K-State, but that's probably why Huggins was so livid last night.

I'm not a fan of the rule because so often it is a judgment call and most players are holding on to make sure they don't get undercut. That being said, the WVU kid clearly did a sort of pull up. I can't blame a ref for T'ing him up on that one.

I have zero idea why it is a problem if a player hangs on the rim or pulls themselves up?
Showboating concerns? Seems dumb

Against Kansas State over the weekend a West Virginia player was T'd up for hanging on the rim at a crucial point in the game, and it was mind numbingly stupid how blatant he was about hanging on the rim. Huggins went nuts over that, and understandably so. In fact, when I first saw this thread, I was thinking "that happened against K State, not TCU."
Well, apparently it happened AGAIN! I don't blame him for being furious because I'm sure it was emphatically explained to his players that they can't be doing that after the K State game. Yet, it happened again. I didn't see it the second time, but I can completely understand not being happy about it.

Does any of this harken back to a time when hanging on the rim or dunking before the game might damage the basket to the point that it could not be used? I remember the old basket setups could become damaged or broken and so dunking was outlawed before the game. With the new equipment and breakaway rims, does any of this even matter anymore? Is this just a "taunting" type of foul? Seems stupid at this point.

That is my guess.
Time for a rule update. Players get away with a lot worse in terms of showboating. Hanging on the rim seems pretty minor, plus at times players get penalized even when they were doing it for safety. Get rid of it being illegal all together.

I thought I remembered that being the reason but couldn't find confirmation after a quick google search. There were some notes that the concern was in part due to damage but the official explanation seems to be that it is considered taunting.

Ha wow, yep I didn't realize this had happened twice either. I can see why Huggs would go crazy (I guess crazier?) after it happened again. Not sure if I would yell the words that he did but I'm no Bob Huggins :)

I remember watching Kendall Pollard get this one while running at full speed with a teammate directly underneath him. I'm not sure what he's supposed to do here.

I think hanging on the rim for a few seconds afterwards is no big deal. Now, once you come down, if you were to stand over someone THAT might be a technical foul for taunting. I say let them hang on the rim for 2-3 seconds. It won't hurt anything, keeps the refs from having to make judgement calls, AND might even keep someone from getting hurt.

Yeah man, white people have never compared black people to primates aka monkeys before. I'm crazzzzzyyyyyy to think that your comment had meaning behind.
Your expected response, "I just said people who hang on the rim, I didn't mean just black people. All people hang on the rim." It's interesting you picked a sport played mostly by black people, at the D1 level, by black people to make a point about show boating and primates. So your "I'm going to play dumb" excuse isn't well taken.
I have a hunch that you did not have nor currently have enough people in your life that tell you to shut the f*ck up when you say stupid shit. More people in this world need that. You're definitely one of them.

Seriously, what is wrong with this board lately? The team is 13-1, #1 in the RPI and in the AP top 10 but you'd never know it by all the pissing and moaning at each other around here. Seemingly innocuous threads have become breeding grounds for instigating meaningless and unwarranted personal attacks. My guess is the damage thing is how it started. I know that they got rid of the rule about it being a technical foul for dunking during pregame warmups this year. They said the reason they had that rule was to prevent damage to the hoop, but now that they are stronger, the rule didn't make sense any more.

If they'd done that in high school a few years back it would have saved me $100. I bet my son he wouldn't dunk before the end of his sophomore year in HS. When he got close I'd say "that wasn't a dunk". He then got a T called on him for dunking in warmups one game, thereby making it "official". The kicker is, the jackass coach had a rule that you sat the rest of the game if you got a T. It hadn't even started! The friggin' coach was watching him and he didn't know it was a T either, but sat him. We lost. Badly.

I have not seen anyone called for simply hanging on the rim in a long time. Pulling yourself up unnecessarily will get you T'd, but simply hanging when anyone is within range is not called anymore. The WVU player pulled himself up big time. His forehead was above the rim. (I almost didn't write that because I'm afraid Juice will call me racist).

I have seen players get called for hanging. Like the vine someone posted earlier even when their momentum or another player is under them the refs can miss it and take it as hanging for no reason and give a T.
I dont get how hanging a little on the rim, or even pulling ones self up on rim is any worse than a number of things players currently due to showboat and not get T'd. Flexing, screaming in another players direction, a quick stare down, etc.

I totally get where you're coming from, and safety trumps all, but they're trying to tame the taunting stuff. And I get that too. Bottom line for me is it's such a judgement call and it's one more chance for refs to mess up. Judgement calls beg for errors. OK, he pulled up a little. How about 5 chin ups? That would blow. Somewhere there is a line, and I don't claim to know exactly where it is.
