I can't really complain about the comeback win. Just one noticeable thing was that last 3:41 we looked a bit lost on offense like no one wanted to step up and hit the shot. It's not a bad thing cause this team is so young and getting that experience and figuring out what to do while getting the win will pay huge dividends in February and March

Great job tonight from sumner, trevon and farr. Reynolds needs to be a bit smarter. All in all great win. Now go rest up...have a merry Christmas and be ready to destroy nova. Their time is over...this is your time now go out there and take it! F nova
Perfect game before a break. ..get down, big comeback and win a tight game on the road against a quality program in a hostile environment. Merry Christmas to all and to Wake "goodnight "

I know fans want to give Jalen crap for picking up fouls but he is getting called on a number of made up calls. Tonight he set a clean pick to pick up his third. Watched it 15 times.. He never leaned, moved or anything.

Well, there was that rather queer occurrence of Myles calling a TO just as Trevon buried a 3 (swish) from the corner. One of those things that you wonder about when you start wondering about the concept of predetermination.

Xavier took a chance. He was 6'1 and 135 pounds when being recruited. He had the skills but the body of a middle school kid.

We started recruiting him when he was maybe 6'0...then he hit a growth spurt and big boys started calling. Even then though I thought I saw where big boys were shuffling their feet and he was their second choice. He wanted to go where he was the schools first choice.

Well, if you watch the replay you will see Myles call for a TO. Yes, I know the new rules that coaches can't call a TO with the ball in play, and Myles was standing in front of Chris. Now you tell me Chris didn't tell Myles to call a TO!
Even with the new rule (a stupid one) players only call TO's when they can't get the ball in, or in a scramble where they have possession and are at risk they can't keep the possession.

I love this team. We have multiple guys who can take over a game or jump start a run. We can beat you inside with Farr and Reynolds, we can drive to the basket, or kill you with the 3 point shot. We rebound from all positions. We are long and athletic, and play great defense. Such a complete team. I can't say enough good things about Farr this year. Amazing transformation. I also like the way he played in foul trouble for much of the 2nd half. Just a great team.

The mental and physical toughness of this team is off the charts. Wake came out loaded for bear, they shot way above their typical average and only missed 2 free throws all night. A guy who shot 56% from the FT line was 100% tonight. it would have been easy to say that "it's not our night" , but no. They just go to the locker room, regroup and come out and smoke Wake in the second half by 23!!! That, even though we had our bigs in foul trouble all night and guys like Remy and JP we're not having good games.
How can you not love this? These guys have talent and a winning mentality. Hold on to your hats....and, oh, Merry Christmas to all!!!!

Fantastic comeback win in a very tough road environment. The start to the 2nd half was obviously key, but I'd say Halftime simply occurring was the key to the win. Wake could do no wrong and had X on their heels. Love seeing Tre come out firing in the 2nd half (after a rough 1st half) instead of shrinking like he could have.
So glad this team was able to take on some serious adversity and overcome it! That is HUGE for later in the season!

Where the hell would this team be without James Farr? Wow. Jalen with another magic trick show where he decides yet again to voluntarily take himself out of the game with boneheaded fouls. Ed Sumner with a massive game along with Trevon. Love the rebounding effort by both. Someone may want to tell Remy that its ok to bring that stellar D and some rebounding sometime soon. Seriously what a great comeback. How good can this team be with all hands on deck contributing to their potential?

Yeah agree if the defender is in good position but Ed seemed to be behind and to the side and working to get in front, thought he almost kind of cut the offensive players path off without being in good position. That's why I was surprised.
Given the exact same play but us on offense and I think we'd all be fuming.

I heard it on the radio. Apparently, Joe and Byron were right next to the bench, and you could hear Mack yelling "Time out" several times. Obviously, he can't call the TO, so I assume he was trying to get one of the player's attentions to call it for him. Unfortunately Davis finally did so just before Bluiett hit the 3.

We look absolutely awful and I'm not surprised. These guys have obviously read way too much about themselves..good dose of reality.
Well, I guess we were overdue to play like festering horse crap.
Hard to watch, we are playing like a deer in the head lights, embarrassing, afraid the deficit is too big to recover from.
might turn it off
Yup game over. Bring on nova
You could tell when Jalen made that lazy ass turnover when he walked over half court and doubled dribbled that they weren't ready to play.
Nova and Butler will kick our ass if we play like this, really disappointing
Horse crap would put up a better fight than this.
Oh well -- they weren't gonna go undefeated anyway. I just wish they'd be taking Ls to ranked programs, where they won't get hurt as badly in the polls.
This just feels like one of those games we aren't coming back from. I hope I am very wrong. It's tough to come backby this much on the road.
we're toast. way, way too many mistakes
Like someone else said it's time for bluiett to stop playing like crap against better teams. I wonder if the fact that he really isn't that athletic hurts him against better teams.
We look tired. Haven't seen WF play this year but my guess is this is about as well as they have played. Anything can happen but I don't expect it too. Honestly I hope the blowout doesn't get bigger.

Many people (and I was wondering) how some adversity would affect them. Not exactly sure if this completely answers the question (not against a top-ranked opponent) but I think this gives us an encouraging clue into the psyche of this group.

Absolutely.. And yes X was making a lot of lazy passes in the first half for turnovers and nothing really falling, but my God they were getting 0 calls on every drive to the basket. For as much as they're emphasizing the defense not putting their hands on people, they seemed to have forgot that in the first half. Funny, they immediately started calling all of them in the 2nd. And funny how quickly the game can turn around when they don't allow you to get mugged

There were a few no-calls in the first half that I actually thought they needed to look at on instant replay. Myles got elbowed on a no-call by Devin Thomas that was above the shoulder and took him out of the game. In the second half they called a moving screen on Wake, and the Wake player connected above the shoulder on either JP or Remy. They also should has given a Technical to Thomas when he slammed the ball off the backboard in frustration after Remy was fouled in transition.
Bottom line Wake forest was very frustrated in the second half when Xavier made their run, and played tentative.

He got about 15 seconds leading up to a media time out in he second half. My take is that he can't play much D and is too fond of jacking up 3s, of which there are plenty of better options on his team.

I'm always amazed that people are so confused and surprised when freshman at X dont play very much. We almost always have guys above them in the pecking order ready to contribute more. There are very few Semaj's and Trevon's on XU teams, doesnt mean anything is wrong with guys like London and Gates or that they are in the dog house or anything, there are just better options right now. I agree with this to a certain extent, but Makinde had an opportunity last night with Farr and Reynolds being in foul trouble for a lot of the time and it was a bit telling that he barely played. Not saying he is in the doghouse per say but there have been rumblings about him in practice, and it seems pretty evident that Mack will only play you if you bring it in practice everyday and if there is an opportunity during the game.
I think we are going to see a great Makinde Junior/Senior year...I just don't think he is there yet. Either the light turns on like it did for Farr, or it never turns on....we shall see.

Only freshmen to start from day one for Mack:
Dez
Semaj

Sumner
Pretty elite group there.

Incredibly elite.. Now I just pray because X is playing so well this year, that they can get large leads in some conference games this year. Edmond at some point is going to need to cut back on his minutes. Every freshman on that list started to wear down at some point.

I dont really think there was that much opportunity. Despite being in foul trouble James played more mins than his average this year. With Trevon at the 4 and almost barely coming out on a game to game basis Makinde is 4th in line for 1 spot. O'mara is always going to get big man minutes ahead of him and even with foul trouble (for Jalen and James) Sean only played 8 mins which is right about his season average.
I dont think there is anything wrong with Makinde or any light needs to come on he's just a younf player who needs to improve his overall game and is 4th in line. I wouldn't be worried.

Those guys will have their turns in the coming years.
Building a foundation for future success. Keeping on winning for today while keeping an eye on tomorrow.
Bigs in particularly take time to develop. Every minute they get in live games helps in that development, so, in that sense, seeing them get some pt is interesting to note. Not seeing them doesn't mean development is not taking place - but it may be an indication that they will be ready to more fully contribute sooner rather that later. After all, depth is one big reason given for Xavier's present status. That doesn't happen by accident.

We shall see what happens. Either he is going to get better and play meaningful minutes next year or he isn't. With Farr leaving, and with Reynolds possibly leaving, the door is going to open for him if he wants it.

Good to hear Tre say this, and it is something that a lot of us figured happened during that first half---that maybe theese guys were reading too much about how great they were.
Really glad to have learned the lesson in a win, and a great freaking comeback!

You got that right. Down 15 at half and playing a good team on their floor.

Tre also said this: "Not that it was going to be a cakewalk, but just ... we've been doing well, had a lot of success up to this point. Like, `Who are you?" Bluiett said, referring to the Demon Deacons. "Coach came in at halftime and kind of set us straight, and told us that we weren't playing the ball that we usually play on defense and offense. We calmed down and kind of got everything together."
Knew it was going to happen eventually. Just goes to show the difference between this year and years past in that they get their wake up call in a win. Not that they were going to overlook Nova but I think it's safe to say they'll be ready to play on the 31st. Need to weather the storm from the tip in that game because you know Nova's going to have a chip on their shoulder after falling to the 4th most talked about team in the Big East

I'm not worried about Makinde at all.
He sprouted like a weed in high school, and he's probably just now getting comfortable in his own skin as a big man. He's been afforded an incredible opportunity to work with some great coaches, work against some veteran bigs in practice, and to be put in a situation where his only focus needs to be on getting better.

London will be a force next year and unstoppable his junior and senior year. No big deal he only played 2-3 minutes. Heck, Gates didn't play.
No biggie.

I'm not really worried about the playing time of two freshman bigs who are 9th and 10th on the depth chart when the team frequently plays a 4-out lineup and this game was rather tense.

I agree. If we can keep Sumner around with Makinde that should be fun. I still think Makinde could factor in at some point this year. Team just has alot of talent and athleticism.

Do the people surprised at London's lack of PT really expect us to go 10-11 deep? We've seen a lot of them because we've been rolling teams, but both London and Gates have shown flashes, and will continue to grow. I think anything we get from them is just an extra benefit, honestly.

I expect that we will see a similar lineup, and the minutes played, in most/all close games in the future.

I watched the first half streaming last night and was pretty discouraged and then had to attend a business dinner and didn't see the results until after the game. What a surprised. Watched the 2nd half later at home. Some musings
This team is really really good with a lot of heart. That was a good comeback.
London will be a stud and just have to wait his turn and contribute when he has the opportunity. Gates will also be solid.
I would be surprised if Sumner lasts beyond next season. He is a stud with the speed and length of an NBA player.
The one I'm actually more concerned about for next season is Macura. Is he going to be content with his minutes? I do like the energy and toughness he brings to the team but sometimes its a little over the top. Just glad he's on our team.
Next 2 games will be key. If we take them, the sky's the limit. If we split them, we'll still be good but if we lose both, we are likely to drop 10 places given the parity this year.

Here are some quotes from the WF board regarding their attendance....
"So far the lower bowl attendance has been pretty good this year. WFU did a great job of offering low priced options in the lower bowl. The upper deck has been scarcely populated and its nowhere the attendance we had 10 years ago, but its much better than just a few years ago."
"I'm surprised at how many people think the crowd will be decent. This seems like the kind of game where, if close in the second half, a great crowd could be a valuable asset to our young-ish team. With the students gone, I can't imagine the crowd being that great, even for a top 10 opponent. I hope I'm wrong."
"The AD has been giving away tickets to faculty, staff, and families. They know this is a big game and they have planned accordingly. They have also been on sale for very low prices at the Deacon Shop at the Mall. I'm not saying it will be a mid 2000's crowd, but it should be one of our better attended OOC games in the past few years. The lower bowl will likely be pretty full."
"don't expect a big crowd for the x game tonight "
"Despite the lack of students, I think this will be the biggest pro-wake crowd a lot of these kids have ever played in front of. There's no tickets available on stub hub and the ticket office has sold all the lower level seats. Kudos to the athletic department for offering the cheap tickets."
"It's free tickets for faculty and staff tonight. They're really trying to get a good crowd."
"Most traffic I've been in for a game in a few years, that's a good sign"
"I've seen a few tweets (including Doofus) that traffic is very heavy around the stadium so it seems the ticket sales and giveaways were effective"

Reading this thread with comments like Wake kind of blows…or they aren't that good. I don't see that.
This was a really good win.
Wake may be struggling in some games to put it all together, but they are big and athletic. They have guys that will score plenty.
What a great game to close out the non-conference schedule and prepare for Nova (although it's too bad they have such a long break).
I don't know how many more games are scheduled for the Skip Prosser Classic. I haven't always loved the matchups in the past, but Danny Manning seems to be recruiting well enough where the matchup could make for a nice OOC rivalry.

Future of the Skip Prosser classic (http://www.goxavier.com/news/2014/5/21/Wake_Forest_and_Xavier_Announce_Revised_Skip_Pross er_Classic_Schedule.aspx)
This season is the beginning of a new 4-year cycle that is scheduled to continue indefinitely between the 2 schools - next year the Skip Prosser Classic will be scheduled at Xavier. The schools will take 2 seasons off and then begin another 4-year cycle in the 2019-20 season. It was originally scheduled as a 10-year series between Xavier and Wake Forest, but this allows for the series to be a fixture game for each school in the long term.

Wake is incredibly average and will get their doors blown off quite often in the ACC. That takes nothing away from what Xavier did in the second half yesterday (which was one of the most impressive halves of basketball I've ever seen from a Xavier team), but it DOES partially explain why it was possible.

Play of the game: Trevon misses the 3, gets his own board, misses the put back, and then puts it in. Love this guy.
This.
Is why TB is my favorite player on Team 94. That sequence right there. Talent oozing out of his pores but plays his freakin arse off. Really improved his D this year. Just a joy to watch really.

But to me, the nastiest play of the game was not Ed's dunk, it was his shake and bake, juke and step back 3 from the corner right in front of X's bench. That gave Xavier a 52-49 lead that they never gave up again.
Just filthy.
One last thing, though, is I don't know what's happened to our free throw shooting lately. All of a sudden, JP can't make a throw and Remy is missing some too.

No argument at all. My 10 year old said "Dad that's NBA!". Smart kid. Now all he wants to do his take step back 3's (Damn it Ed!). I want him for 1 more year and I'll be happy. No way he stays past next year and let's be honest - he could be gone after our National Championship season this year.

Ed had the last 5 points of the first half too. A 3 and an offensive board stick back with 1 sec left of the shot clock.
He also had a great offensive board and put back later in the 2nd half.
And he got back and drew the charge on Crawford.
Sumners step back 3 had Steph Curry written allover it. Just freaking awesome . Damn this is a fun ride.
The replay is on Fox Sports right now and it's the FUN part! (Not the fugly part.)
