I rarely post but I couldn't find this by googling or searching the forums so forgive my ignorance.... what does #Team94 mean? Does that mean this is the 94th year of XU basketball? If so, why have I never heard of #Team93, #Team92, etc??

It's a new trend. I personally hate it, but it's one of those first world problems.

yes, it means it is the 94th Xavier basketball team. Last year they did Team 93, but i dont think it was as apparent as it is this year.

I'm surprised you all don't like it, I'm a big fan. I think it emphasizes the need for the team to work towards carving out their place in Xavier history, and adds a little extra motivation.

Ok, I don't really like it either. #Team100 would be cool in a few years but before I saw that #Team94 was referencing this year's team I had assumed it had something to do with the 1994 team.
Is this a trend in other teams/sports? Maybe I'm just out of the loop...

I know Michigan does it for both football and basketball.

I would rather they be Team#1 as the first X team to play in the Final Four.

They've done it for at least a few years. Maybe the program didn't acknowledge it as much but it was all over twitter from players/fans/etc.

If you have "Team 100" show up out of nowhere, it could be confusing. Having team #93, #94, etc, builds up to #100, seems to make more sense.
This is my guess as to why they begun using this terminology. I don't know if this was Coach Mack, Learfield Sports, or whose idea it was...I am curious to know why it started.

A lot of other schools do the #Team94 -- I don't think people started to notice it until the last couple years. I'm assuming the expansion of social media has fed into that. But as FTW said, I know Michigan has been doing it for years. Hoke was all about it when he was hired on as a tradition guy.
Mack and other guys on the team mentioned it at the end of last year when they were talking about what this team needed to be looking forward. I don't see why it would be a problem. They aren't really trying to put emphasis on the fact that it's the 94th team, it's just an easy way to identify which specific team in X history they're talking about. I think it also gives a lot of the guys a focus on this year and this year only with trying to accomplish their goals. Kind of takes away thoughts about what their next couple of years might be like or even what last year was. It helps with the game by game mentality and how special "Team 94" could be on that route

Since we have a calendar, I don't think that's ever really been a problem.

Exactly what I was thinking. Which was your favorite team in XU history? #Team83? Lame.

I am fine with it and I can tell you Mack refers to it a lot. Each team has their own identity and destiny.

Yea, I thought it was kind of dumb at first, but I think it's more of a thing inside the team and now I'm really starting to like it. Reminds me of the progress Xavier's made and reminds the players to leave their mark in that line. Kind of cool and is a good reminder I think.

I don't mind it... I think a few posters nailed it in that it is a way for players to write the story of each year. Each team has ONE chance to dictate their own chapter. Probably not something anyone at X cares whether fans like / don't like...

Exactly. And truth be told that sounds like the team from 1983, not the 83rd team. (Last year, when he kept saying Team93 I thought at first it could be because the seniors were born in 1993 or something because for the life of me I couldn't figure out why else he'd use that.) Obviously, I also think it's incredibly stupid. I don't care that they do it, but I'm not going to start referring to the team that way. To me, there's the 1st Sweet Sixteen team, David West, The Run team, The '08 Team, etc.

This was my whole point.. They aren't trying to say it and do it for you and for the fans. It's for the players. Yes, by saying it, they are referring to one specific team. A lot easier for players to refer to themselves as Team 94 than 'The 2015-2016 Team".. I don't think they really care how you reference each team in X's history to your friends. But to them it means something and stands for what they're trying to accomplish this specific year. Don't think I've heard Mack or anyone trying to push for this name to become widespread and something they're constantly referenced as. Just something they use within the locker room

Agreed, so they need to start referring to this team as #TeamFirstShip, since obviously in the future this team will win the national championship and they should already know it and refer to it as such.

Then you're not paying attention. He uses it a lot in interviews and did last year. All the official twitter accounts, including Mack's use it. It's on the intro videos, the billboards, etc. etc. I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt the X billboard on Glenway Avenue that had Team93 on it last year was for the players.
