Cronin has been saying stupid stuff in post game press conferences for years:
"I have such a young team."
"Seton Hall would be in first place in the A-10." (And I believe he said the same the same about another team that beat UC.)
"I ripped Yancy Gates' jersey off in the locker room."
"We let a guy who can only go to his right score 29 points." - when asked about how well Tu Holloway played.
And there are many more.
That said, you can't deny that he turned around the UC program and he's done a decent job there. I think he's been to the NCAA's about 5-6 years in a row. He's just a step or two behind Xavier, and I think that bothers him.
He compared us to Golden State just this past week.
And then made some boneheaded reference to the old Big East.....get over it Mick, you've been on the outside looking in for 3 years now.
It's good for us to have UC relevant (it makes for a better win), and Mick is an amusing little character. Never heard the one about how Tu can only go right and still put up 29. That's good for a chuckle and I don't have to live with him as MY coach. He can embarrass himself for my amusement, and I'm OK with that.

I'll concede that UC players don't get arrested right and left anymore like they did under Huggins. I mean, sure, Ellis was tossed off the team for assaulting someone and then allowed back on the team, but we'll disregard that for the sake of continuity. Outside of that, I'm not sure how much he really turned the program around. Andy Kennedy was doing a fine job winning games as interim HC, and Huggins despite his inability to recruit guys who didn't have a raging desire to be incarcerated, won games. Cronin has been no more successful in the Tournament than Huggins, and UC fans I know are very irritated he can't get past that first weekend. Also according to my UC friends, he's the only UC coach in history to lose 3 times in a row to X twice. So, to say he turned the program around seems a little bit grandiose. He hasn't managed to completely run it into the ground despite losses to teams like the Presbyterian Blue Hose and losing a big time league affiliation. So there's that bright spot.

As for your first paragraph, that may explain why he was so defensive and said the stupid statements in his press conference yesterday.
As for your second paragraph, I am referring to the fact that when he got to UC, he inherited a team that had one returning scholarship player and no committed recruits. The returning scholarship player was a kid who transferred from a D3 school in New Orleans after the hurricane because I think the school stopped playing hoops after that. It was almost as though the team was coming off the death penalty.

I went back and watched the replay last night just to see where the Jaundiced Leprechaun was at the end of game handshake.
Amazingly, he started walking toward the Xavier bench with over 6 seconds left and I don't even think he saw the last 3 that SucKS made because his back was turned. He couldn't even wait to shake the hands of the players in a line. By the time the players formed the line, YTG was probably already in the locker room hallway. I guess he didn't want his pasty grille on TV in a close up having to bow down to CMack. Such disrespect to your opponent.
I really want to hear his WLW call in show this Thursday night.....from the WLW studios. He must have known he was going to lose so he wanted to be in a controlled environment where the questions from his "fans" could be censored.

Finally, we won, and beat the Borecats, but there were some very curious official calls that almost seemed like they were trying to keep SucKS in the game.
The "Five" second out of bounds call, that happened when they went into a full court press with about 6 minutes left in the game, was really only 4 seconds. I counted it numerous times, when I watched the game and the ref handed the ball to Ed and counted a second immediately. Even watching it live, I thought it was a very quick count.
I still don't know where the foul on Remy Abel was that predipitated the CMack technical. Not only that, the ref, Roger Ayers was 35 feet away from Mack. He was also the one who called the foul- and he wasn't the closest ref to the baseline. He was on the bunch sideline. Ayers has had bad games in the past- most notably the Western Kentucky "6 men on the court game."
Not to sound like Cryer fan, but there were some very curious, curious calls, and non-calls vs the Borecats.
But we won., anyway.

I watched the press conference, and Cronin is an idiot. He started out really well protecting his players and asking if they had enough and to compliment Xavier, then he just started saying stupid shit like our pack line defense shouldn't create turn overs, and references to Puff The Magic Dragon?

Agreed. There were a number of times I think we got fouled driving the lane that they didnt call. But in a way it was nice to see us win by double digits with our best scorer having an off night and the calls not going our way. Top 10 teams find a way to win those games and thats exactly what we did.

It may be buried somewhere in this thread. But I'm pretty sure there was a twitter video or vine (?) thing of the few seconds when Mick gets the T and the screams at the ref.
If anyone has a link to that, I'd love to see it.

This may be a weird connection to make but every year as the crosstown shootout comes and goes, the state of UCs program reminds me of this Seinfeld quote substituting the shootout for birthdays.
"Well, birthdays are merely symbolic of how another year has gone by and
how little we've grown. No matter how desperate we are that someday a better
self will emerge, with each flicker of the candles on the cake, we know it's not
to be, that for the rest of our sad, wretched pathetic lives, this is who we are
to the bitter end. Inevitably, irrevocably; happy birthday? No such thing."

Where would long-time fans rank the atmosphere at Cintas on Saturday? Was it the same as previous Shootouts? Better/worse? My wife and I were really impressed, but this is only our second season going to games.

I think it may have been a little more amped up due to being back to campus after the hiatus. Overall though every shootout I have been to has been a great atmosphere (minus US bank).
The moment I walked in my heart was racing. I also had to apologize to the woman next to me if my flailing arms came close to connecting with her as I was celebrating. #canthelpit

I have been going to games since the Gardens and it was right up there with any of the Cintas Center. I do think that Gardens was louder. The Umass comes to mind and the Crosstown game where Xavier scored 9 points led by Jamaal; Walker in like a minute and a half (my memory is fuzzy on exact events) to come back and steal the game in OT. My buddy was jumping on his seat so much he actually snapped it and he was a normal size person.
I re-watched the game on TV on Sunday and it came across as a good atmosphere.

I wish I could have gone to a game at the Gardens. My dad and brother were at that UMass game. I think I was 7 and didn't really follow the team, but I remember them pulling in the driveway after the game, and being so disappointed that Xavier had lost. Probably my only Xavier memory before watching the 99 shootout on TV.

I'm sure I looked like a total idiot. My voice was shot by tip-off and it's still not back to normal. 100% worth it, though, especially when the UC fans in front of me walked out with about 2 minutes left in the game.

That was about as loud as I have ever heard that building. I don't know if it was the loudest, or the third loudest, or 10th loudest...my memory is not reliable enough to accurately rank how things sounded dozens of years ago.
People say the games at the Cincy Gardens were louder, and because it was basically a concrete bowl with a lid on it...they probably were. But I don't know if they keep stats on decibel levels, so as far as I am concerned, Saturday's game was the loudest any crowd has ever been, for any game in the history of mankind.
Especially after this boom shaka lakka...

It was the first time in a while that I felt like the Cintas crowd had a good finger on the pulse of the game, as far as when to stay up for a defensive possession after a big offensive play.

Yes, for a good portion of the game it was so loud you couldn't hear yourself think. The crowd was really into it. Standing during key runs. Though it seemed like whenever I stood, UC scored so i stopped standing.
The first 5 minutes of the second half. (When they forgot to tell Xavier that halftime was over) sucked for more than just the 0-10 run UC pulled on us. It also sucked because the (very small) contingent of UC fans got encouraged enough to let out two Ohh Ohh Ohh UC cheers. To hear that in our own arena really sucked.
I got to go to several Gardens games from 91-95 as a student, my first crosstown was row A on the floor.
Oh, and we can't count Illinois and K-State as Cintas games, if memory serves we rented US Bank for those. Huggins wanted his admirers to be able to get in. Remember all the Huggins fans dressed in K-State gear?

But the student section worked hard to shut them down and I think that woke up the team a bit because things started getting louder. This was my first shootout in the lower bowl and we were near the student section. Couldn't hear right for about an hour after the game. It was AWESOME!!

No trash talk here, just technical basketball.
After going back and watching the game twice, it was striking to me how much ball movement there was on Xavier's offensive side and how much lack of the same was on the. Borecat's side. Xavier would swing the ball side to side, deep and back. SucKS had one pass, a bunch of standing around and then a one on one move way too many times. SucKS was especially inept against the 1-3-1- a defense that Xavier plays all the time! I know that the Clifton coaches had to have scouted, and yet at no time,Micky, did you have your guys prepared to move a guy to the middle or space wide on the baselines with passing angles to enter the ball to the soft spots? It was almost like watching a Freshman High School team try to score against a really good college team. There was obviously no concept of what to do.
I know that we play pretty effective D in the 1-3-1, but the Kitties were so incompetent, it was almost like stealing candy. For their offensive foibles, if nothing else, fans of that team across town should doubt their coach. And knowledgeable basketball writers have to see it too- how badly YTG designs and coaches an offense.
If SucKS can't get the opposition to turn the ball over, they are in big, big trouble. Meanwhile Xavier's offense flows smoothly- like the Ohio River past Great American Ball Park. Such a difference.

I am sure you noticed MOR, but the Cincy 10-0 run to start the 2nd half was in part helped by XU standing around on offense. Mack called the TO and we went back to the heavy ball movement, man movement you described in your post. That Cats couldn't press the entire time I feel because XU had high ball movement on the offensive end. Adding a press would have wore out their team.

Good insight here. I rewatched the game a few times as well and I cant give enough credit to Sumner for how well he facilitates this offense. I feel like we are a completely different team when he is in the game, as he is able to get into the lane and open up the floor.

We can all be thankful that the SucKS coaching tree started with BeelzeBob. YTG learned his crappy offense schematics from him.
Thugggins' "Open Post Offense" is one of the most easily defensible schemes around. His teams always relied on intimidation, rebounding, steals and defense, but if you get them in a half court game, they are terrible. The one exception was the year after Coif went to West Virginia and he coached highly intelligent basketball players recruited by John Beilein that had a different way ingrained. To Thuggs credit, he didn't change them, but as soon as they graduated he went right back to his old way...and it sucked.
When Thuggasaurus was at Clifton, Xavier held their own because no one on XU was intimidated. They played summer league with the kitties and they knew who they were.
YTG learned from the worst...and it is to Xavier's benefit....in spades.

I think Mick's biggest disappointment on Saturday wasn't getting manhandled by X on the court. I really believe he was hoping for something over the top in terms of fan reactions or a fight on the court that would help his efforts to eliminate The Shootout.
He really wants to eliminate it because he's getting embarrassed on the court, but he needs it to appear as though it's due to the risk and animosity.

The Gardens got rowdy like it was it's job and every game was fun. With the Cintas it seems like it's pulling teeth sometimes. What makes these games fun is getting rowdy and trying to affect the game. This game was the best in awhile I agree, but with a team like this I wish it would happen more often. They deserve raucous crowds every night. The best games were the Lionel over Eric Hicks shootout and the brawl game.

Xavier scored 23 points in the second half. Xavier had 14 assists on 27 field goals, Cincinnati had 17 assists on 21 field goals. Xavier still is a better team. #trollingwithnumbers.

Xavier had 6 more field goals. UC went almost 7 minutes without a field goal in the second half against the 1-3-1. Cincinnati is not a good offensive team.

I watched the game again today on YouTube. I had a particular interest in the moment Jalen ended up on the floor in the second half. The short of it: I thought he handled it very well.
Sorry Mick.

Sorry Mick.
Hope you noticed how minute Jalens first and last fouls were. He may be getting into foul trouble but not because he is fouling. Also does anyone have any idea why Mack got T'd? While re watching the game you could read his lips saying 'What did I say'

Sorry Mick.
I enjoyed watching Farr up close with Ellis just smiling, talking and laughing during breaks in play. I don't think THAT played into the way UC wanted things to go down. They needed more irrational emotion and behavior to mask the inferior talent and coaching.

I think he was pissed about the foul situation. We had something like twice as many fouls in the second half, and the UC players were fouling every trip down the court with no calls. Meanwhile, we even thought about contact and we got called for a foul. He also said "this is f-ing bull$%^&" and he was right. It was.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A former University of Cincinnati and NBA player is heading to prison after being convicted of federal drug and gun charges.
A judge sentenced Arthur "Art" Long on Tuesday to nearly seven years behind bars. The 43-year-old was convicted of operating his home as a hub for dealing marijuana and ecstasy. Prosecutors said he also had two firearms.
Long was a star player at East High School in Rochester, New York, and also at the University of Cincinnati. He was arrested in 2013 after police searched his vehicle and his home in the Rochester suburb of Chili.
Investigators found ecstasy, marijuana, an AK-47 and a stolen .45-caliber handgun, along with drug-packaging materials.
Long played for the NBA's Sacramento Kings, Seattle SuperSonics, Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors between 2000 and 2003."

So, we had dinner and drinks at Arthur's in Hyde Park following the Auburn game. We have some X gear on and the couple next to us at the bar (in their 30's I'd say) asks us if we were at the game. We say yes, and the game was great. Somehow the leap is made, and and I have to explain that I hope UC wins every game left on their schedule, which is true. The guy says "yeah, only because it's better for you". Dumb point, I never said I was a convert. I mention my brother-in-law went to UC and he's a great guy and I'm happy when his team wins. Not good enough. This jackass is soon into "yeah, you see me sitting here". I wish it weren't true, but I do see him so respond along the lines of "yes, there you are". At this point my ex-roomie is wisely suggesting the barkeep call for the authorities and the wife is cutting him off from coming our way. This causes some concern on his part. We play it calm and just refuse to look in that direction until they box their food and leave. Anyone who knows me knows one more blow to the head will probably not matter much. The inconvenience of police reports and court dates would suck. I've never been in a bar fight (because I didn't go to UC?) but part of me......
So, to all the people who hate UC or Dayton to the bottom of your heart, I can now say I have a new understanding. This was like a middle school cafeteria situation.... With adults. Taking the high road was the best way to go, but part of me wishes I had made that last little acknowledgement that would have landed him in jail the weekend before Christmas. He can just go about living his sorry little life without any additional criminal record.

The problem with fighting UC fans is that they have less to lose.
