Additionally, Xavier Athletics will be hosting a Star Wars Night on Tuesday, December 8 for the Wright State game. The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive an exclusive Star Wars-themed Xavier poster. Fans are invited to wear their best Star Wars gear and the fan selected as "best dressed" will receive 2 tickets to the Opening Night showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the Cinemark Oakley Station

Agree. "Star Wars" nerd dress-up night rivals reflection sessions in their stupidity. WTF is going on over there?
Promos are supposed to juice up the crowd and maybe add a few butts in the seats. Somebody over there in marketing should have a light saber taken to their ass.

I actually enjoyed the Star Wars movies. It sucks that movies that were legitimately entertaining are being overshadowed by adult men between the ages of 30 and 60 who feel the inexplicable need to dress up like the characters in the movies, and have philosophical-(ish) debates about a world that doesn't even exist.

Another bizarre institution that seems to attract an interesting crowd. Everyone comes to the game dressed as a Rocky Horror character, and then they show the movie up on the big screen after the game.

This is a TERRIBLE idea. I mean TERRRRRRIBLE!!!
I realize Brew posted this tongue in cheek, but the white out is about as bad of an idea. This isn't minor league baseball, that has to come up with promotions to put butts in the seats. We are the 12th ranked team in the country playing our most heated rival. No need for bush league crap like this.
THRILLHOUSE
12-01-2015, 04:50 PM
Yeah, I can kinda get why baseball teams and minor league sports teams do the Star Wars night events. MLB is a long season and it's a way to get more people to a game that normally wouldn't sell well. Minor league teams always do themed events like that to get attention. X vs Wright State might not be a complete sell out, but shouldn't be too far off especially with the hot start. Yeah, I get that X isn't gonna turn down sponsorship money from Cinemark, but didn't have to do something so tacky (and really played out at this point).

NO ONE SHOULD EVER DRESS UP AS STAR WARS CHARACTERS EVER!!! That's the harm in it!! I'm not sure the actors in the movie should even be dressing up as the characters.
Why is this a thing? Why do Star Wars Nights, and parties, and costume contests, and conventions, and everything else exist?
It's not an issue of tainting the integrity of the game! It's an issue of tainting the integrity of society! There is simply too much Star Wars in the world! Ugly Christmas sweater parties are not good, but I guess they are tolerable once a year. Star Wars is not!! We need to stop it before it's too late!,

You need to relax. It's the single biggest movie franchise spanning the last 40 years. It's a story of good over evil despite long odds. Literally billions of people have enjoyed the Star Wars movies.
You do realize you are a fan of a sport where thousands of fans dress up in spirit wear every time the team takes the court, right? How is a grown man dressing in a Greedo costume all that different than a grown man in a basketball costume?

God, I hated the dance team. Besides not really caring for their performance, I hated that they were then given the first row seats in section 116 that my friends and I always got. We were stuck behind these ass clowns who didn't really care about the game and who just treated it like a social outing.

Actually Star Wars is not the highest grossing franchise. Without the use of google, I would hazard a guess that Harry Potter and those, what, eight movies would beat them out. I would also think that the six Lord of the Rings movies would also win out.
Look, I get people love Star Wars. I never understood the fanaticism for it. I honestly gave the first three movies from the 70s/80s a chance again and they just don't hold up for me as an adult. Forget the second set that are beyond watchable. I put those down in the Twilight realm. I won't make fun of people for it, but I seriously don't get the draw for them. This new one looks good, but I am about as excited for it as I am for any other movie that is coming out.
Episode two of the second three movies, I caught this on opening night. I went out with some friends from PwC at the time after a happy hour. One of my co-workers was hammered and pulled a insult the comic dog routine with a dude in a storm troopers outfit. Those nerds were about to throw down with us in the ticket line. I still regret wasting my time in that crappy movie.

+1 though I am not a Michigan football fan anymore despite growing up near the University. Yes, Star Wars is pretty stupid. Like my previous post, the first six movies just didn't hold up to time. I re-watch movies like Bladerunner/Alien from that same time period and you get a good idea of movies that actually stand up well today and are still very watchable. Star Wars fans forget that movies are both about effects and writing/acting.
I had a friend of mine who I used to watch XU games with tell me, I was more passionate about XU basketball than he was about "anything" else in his life.

Not a fan of the white-out for the UC game. Assuming they are intent on doing a stupid white-out for at least one game a year, did they have to pick UC, of all games? C'mon.
I am a huge Star Wars fan, and, full disclosure: Pimp, Lamont, and I already have our tickets for opening morning. That said, not sure I'm into it as a promo for a Xavier game. Those are two different areas of my life and I don't care for the cross-pollination. And it's really not a kid franchise, and hasn't been for 30 years. That's why Episode I sucked - they tried to make it cute for kids, but most of audience just found it annoying.
I think it's funny that Wright State is also Faculty/Staff Family night. That's the equivalent of Bushwood's Caddy Day:

Sorry if someone else said something similar...I was lazy and didn't read all the posts. I will say this, I used to work in Minor League Baseball and our Top Execs felt the same way. They argued against it, said it was over done and didn't really work. They said this about Star Wars Night and Super Hero Night. Then we did both (well, we tried Star Wars very half-a$$ed first) and they both sold out and were huge hits.

I looked it up because I'm sitting in the school pick up line and have nothing better to do.
Anyway, the highest grossing franchise is Marvel, followed by James Bond, Harry Potter, LotR, and Star Wars. However, most people discount Marvel and Bond because they're not "single property ". So, in that case it would be HP, LotR and then Star Wars.
That said, I've read in several different places that this new Star Wars movie is expected to become the highest grossing movie of all time, and possibly even win some Oscars, becoming this generation's Titanic.
Now you can all sleep better tonight knowing this. You're welcome!

I only looked up the movie portion, but yeah. We were in Disney 4 years ago, and they were already selling a lot of Star Wars stuff tied in with the mouse and that was long before the purchase of Lucasfilm.
I'm looking forward to the movie because Little LM is a big fan and it's fun and nostalgic to be able to do this kind of thing with your kids. It's like the first time we let her watch Jurassic Park, E.T., etc. - it's passing on the joy that these movies bring. But I do not in any way shape or form understand people who spend gazillions of dollars on costumes and traveling the country for various Comic Cons. We have a friend who does it, but I don't get it.

It sounds silly but I know people that do it. Think about how you feel when you see someone wearing an X jersey and it's sort of like that. Starting off with that one thing in common makes social situations easier. That's especially important for people that have social anxiety issues. Others just really like to dress up. It's their way of holding onto their inner child. People that go to these conventions always say how inclusive the gatherings are. Sort of like a mega church but instead of coffee and a live band you have Ewoks and comic book signings.

Kinda like a lot of people would balk at what my family dropped this past weekend to follow Xavier University in a basketball tournament.
That's why I say it's to each their own.
I've been to plenty of comic conventions, music festivals, and sporting events across the country. Be it for a team/band/movie, fandom is crazy, and that passion is what unites, and it is great to be with like minded individuals. The dressing up thing isn't for me, but I don't judge. So, there's a new Star Wars coming out? Really? I thought they got to the end of that. Or the beginning, or whatever. I guess if Sly Stalonne can find another way to make another (non-Rocky) Rockie movie, Star Wars can live on forever.
There is a HUUGE difference.
Rocky won the Cold War all by himself, and he did it on Christmas Day!! When future generations look at the history books, that's what's going to be taught!
What the hell did Star Wars ever do??

It's no different than the guys that go to NFL games with full face/body paint and elaborate costumes as well.
I guess I should have chosen my words more carefully. When I say "I don't get it" it's not that I don't understand what they're doing or who they're dressing up as or what makes it enjoyable for them. I mean, I'm not an idiot. And, as I said, I have a friend who is gone almost every weekend for months at a time at various conventions. It makes her happy, and that's fine but it holds zero appeal to me. I don't judge her for being her, but I personally don't get why it would make anyone happy in the same way that I don't understand why being a dayton fan would make anyone happy.
I enjoy Star Wars. I enjoy Disney. I enjoy The Walking Dead and X-Men and Batman (I personally find the Marvel movies to be meh, but that's just me). I also enjoy Xavier basketball. I don't have an overwhelming desire to make any one of those things the center of my existence. It's the same reason we have Little LM playing various sports, learning an instrument, in scouts, attending the symphony on occasion and X basketball on occasion, etc. To me, IN MY OPINION, being well-rounded and having diverse interests is more fun than spending copious amounts of time and money on one thing. That's just me. I don't give a poo what anyone else does, but I'm also allowed to think it's a waste of money for a grown woman to spend thousands of dollars on a black widow costume. That's just who I am.

There are people who drive hours, get hotel rooms, and stay in cities just to watch a band they like play a concert. Grown men get up at the crack of dawn and head to parking lots, dressed in $100 Nike jerseys, to drink beer and then pay another $100 to go into a stadium to a watch game that's available on free TV at home.
We all do weird stuff and spend money on things that are completely irrational. It just seems normal to us.
There is a HUUGE difference.

My language was poor. My point was that "of franchises that span 40 years, Star Wars is #1" . I forgot about James Bond.
It was a multi-generational qualifier, but I worded it wrong. If Harry Potter has the staying power in 30 more years, I will give it the nod.

Michigan State is currently doing a White out versus Louisville... I wouldn't call them Bush league.

It's not the program that is bush league, it's the whiteout.

Are you sure? I thought they rode the Whiteout to the Final Four..... after that they had to rely on talent and coaching. Everyone knows the whiteout doesn't work in the Final Four.
I don't really give a rip if people want to do a Whiteout, but it's not really my thing.

Huh?
Huh?
NM, trying to explain it would probably only get more convoluted. Some fans might like whiteouts, but they don't score points or block shots.

Apparently in addition to the idiotic nature of a white out vs UC, administration isn't letting students have the campout. Really poorly done by whoever is making these decisions.

Maybe I should thank the administration for trying to send the message that this is "just another game." I'll have to think about that.

If you really want to get picky Star Wars wouldn't count either. Bond is really it for consistency. Those nerd movies came out 77-83 for the first, following by a LONG break until 99-05, followed by another LONG break to 15-??. Bond, however, has made 4x the number of movies of which it's longest break was only 6 years.
Damn, nerds gotta go all nerdy on stuff and think their nerd stuff is the best.
When I was a child, I talked, thought, and reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. Help me guys, Corinthians but I forget the numbers.

the only way I'm backing a Star Wars night is if Bill Murray sings the theme.

So stupid, the last campout was my Freshman year and it was definitely my favorite night on campus, it's just a great tradition with some of your closest friends at the time. It was blistering cold, so luckily the whiskey warmed me up, but I can't believe they'd throw that out the window, it was so much fun.

Yea I was a junior for the campout in 2011. Two coldest nights of the year but some of my fondest memories come from that weekend. The players came to hang out with us for a bit and all the students just bonded over the experience. It's a shame they're trying to take that away.

We spent the night in line back in the late 90s - albeit inside. I slept on stairs the one year.

NOOOO!!!!
They need to KEEP the campout, and GET RID of STAR WARS!!!
THEY GOT RID OF THE WRONG THING!!!!!!!
Only had one experience with the white-out but it was great. It was vs Purdue in 2011. That might've been the loudest I have ever heard Cintas. Now admittedly, that was one hell of a game. But I think the white-out helps the older crowd get off their butts and start cheering.

Down like 19 with 10 or so to go to come back to win. One of my favorite games while at X. Tu had some major cajones that day.

I am 100% certain I was the reason for that comeback because I got into the stadium as we started coming back after night class. I would say that was a toss-up between loudest with Tu's 3 against Purdue. Man those were some damn good memories.
