View Full Version : Anyone who attended have comments on the game/Dayton fans behavior

Due to the checkered history of Dayton fan behavior I am curious to hear how they digested the drubbing witnessed. Did any behave as bad as in the past or did they just accept inferiority and drink away the fact that they called us cowards for not scheduling them only to have their bacon cooked in what will be the only chance to play us for several years.
I was surprised how many stayed until the buzzer considering they were down by 30 and getting beat by the second team and some walk ons.

They were in shock. Very quiet. Some gracious but no one was obnoxious after the game.
Got a lot of good games/good lucks back at the hotel.
They've never been beat down by that by Xavier before.
I read they bused 300 people along with band down here just for Sunday's game.

The alternative to staying was "returning to Dayton."
That's an easy call.

Wow, about 14 hours on a bus each way to attend a cricket game. You know so quite you can ....
Glad to hear they were above the crazies I used to see at the Dump but of course those that had the jack to go to Orlando probably do not deliver pizza for a living like the ones always in my face.

Most of them were great throughout the weekend. Only exception was a group yelling "Xavier sucks" at me and my son as we walked to our seats for the Bama game. A group sat near us for that game and started cheering for the Tide led by an old guy with an eye patch. Xavier Bob charmed "patches" and kinda shut him up for the rest of the game...but he was a dick. Sunday, they couldn't say anything.....shell-shocked!

They were completely delusional prior to the beat down. My son and I overheard a rather portly Flyer fan telling two strangers in the parking lot that the Flyers had driven Xavier out of football in 1973 and that on Sunday they would drive X out of basketball, too. Moron.
On a side note, the flight from MCO to CVG that we are currently on is rather quiet, as it is a mixed lot of UD and Xavier fans. There's really not much you can say to them that doesn't sound like patronage or pity.

I was with Frambo, he's right patches was a dick, so just to shut him up I killed him with kindness believe me it was hard. Most of the slams from Dayton fans came before Sunday. Actually post game we had several conversations with rational people. I talked to a pep band member both the ban and cheerleaders flew down an were there for all three games.

Would like to hear where you read that because the band and cheerleaders were at all their games down here. Surprising because this is the first preseason tournament I have ever seen this take place. There were a lot of UD fans but not the same if you go to their arena because they behaved like civilized humans. Although, was rather impressed with their cheers; kinda put us to shame in this category. Thankfully the team brought it so the outcome was awesome!

As someone else pointed out, the person who can afford to take time off from a real job to travel to Florida and stay at a Disney hotel (most likely) and handle all the associated expenses...... is not the typical Dayton fan at the Dump. That made sense to me.

I live in Dayton and if we started playing them again no way would I go to the games at UD. I have had terrible experiences at our games there only because I wore our logo. To the above point , I did not get any harassment during game because I always sit in lower level seats with a civil often even friendly crowd . It was the arriving and exiting that was the problem and not just drunken adults but also spoiled mean spirited students . My UD fan friends refuse to believe I was so mistreated because they don't see it down low where they sit. (Off topic but dam that place is loud I mean freaky loud, way louder than Cintas )

I agree with all your points and think the reason it gets so loud is how it is designed and how those old arenas really carry sound. I do think the loudest venue of all was the Cincinnati Gardens. The roof could explode at that place. The Xavier-UMASS game in 1996 and Xavier-uc, 1999 (both #1 teams at the time) were the loudest I think I have ever heard a game. Cintas gets pretty loud for being a newer arena.

the older buildings are seemingly louder. Mac Court at Oregon was as loud as a rock concert. I know their new arena is really nice, but there was something awesome about their old one.
When it's full, Gallagher Iba Arena, which is another old building, is deafening as well.

Interestingly the VD fans were pretty nice,,, but easy to explain since the crowd skewed old, really really old. Never seen so many 80+ at a basketball game in my life. It was comical, kind like a mini (very mini) version of the elderly crowd that follows UK hoops. Funny hats, goofy looking bling and really old t shirts.
I spotted dozens from a 2003 game, they must have been very proud of that one. The oddest one gad "why not us" across the back. That would have to be the whiniest of any slogan ever for any sport.
In the line snaking into the arena I was high fiving every XU fan we passed, lots of smiles, lots of fun, the VD fans were mostly silent as church mice, it showed that we were a much more lively crowd
In the arena, they went all out, band and cheerleaders, they probably came close to outnumbering us by 2-1. Funny thing about their pre game, they cheered the loudest when there wasnt a soul on the court, just cheering to eachother. When the players hit the court our crowd was superior in every way, we were never out chanted, not once the entire game. To their credit they stayed with it into the second half, they had lost a lot of energy but the chants were still there. But that 21-0 run put them back into their seats, onto their hands. Barely heard a peep out of them after that.
Overall it was as civil a VD crowd as I've ever seen, probably because the 19-35 age crowd was absolutely absent, They were 10% pre teen, 10% 35-55, 80% AARP

Surprisingly, I didn't have any run-ins with any Dayton fans during the entire trip. They were only in the one session with us so the opportunities were limited. There weren't all that many of them in the non-Dayton sessions and X was kicking the snot out of everyone they played so there wasn't much reason to cheer if they were aiming to root against us . Not that I was looking for an argument, but I was ready to go before, during, and after whether it was at the arena, at the hotel, or in the parks. I will respectfully dispute a few of the above comments by XU-PA. It seemed pretty clear to me that we were outnumbered roughly by 4-1 (not 2-1). And if that's not accurate, my bet is that it would actually be more like 5-1. I will also say that, given the numbers advantage, anytime they wanted to outcheer/cheer over top of us, they did it easily. Doesn't mean they're better fans. Just numbers. But if I have to give their delusional fan-base credit for one thing, they are loyal. They had a shit-ton of fans there and while they (for obvious reasons) stayed pretty quiet during and after that 21-0 run, I was actually pretty stunned they still cheered after that but they did manage to put together that lame "Goooooooo Dayton Flyers".
Hard to describe just how gratifying that tourney win was - especially since we boat-raced Dayton to finish it off. Doesn't compare at all to a tourney win in March, but it sure felt nice zipping their asses up and rubbing it in.

That 80% group obviously was the group that were the 19-35 crowd that experienced their heydays in the 60's and some of the 70's.
That demographic mix may or may not be a concern of the UD Administration, but it doesn't take a great analyst to see that UD's great traveling fan base will begin a steady decline sooner than later. I'm just happy that many of them showed up and were made to shut-up, while witnessing a top-flight program.
BTW, since we played them, I had to check out UDPride for the first time in a long time to assess the suicide watch level over there. I have to hand it to them for their level of delusion. Most of them seemed to go down the road of thinking that their freshmen simply weren't ready yet. It was the mistakes they made in the game, not that their players were overwhelmed by superior talent, including superior freshmen and sophomore talent: "We played very poorly, and X played well."
You don't say.
The UD fan base is truly gifted for being able to operate inside a comfortable bubble of their reality.
And, they have "Big Steve" - which is nice (for them).

The game was at Disney World. Over Thanksgiving weekend. Of course the crowd was tame, and civil, and well behaved, and not that crazy. Before the game people were talking about how crazy they thought the crowd was going to be, and I was just shaking my head. Most crazy people aren't going to spend the time and money to go to Disney World.

This is a separate, but important (at least in my opinion) issue. People don't care about college basketball at this point of the season like they should. I know that Fresno State isn't a big brand name, but they were unbeaten, and Oregon is a good team that's in the rankings. Yet, people won't show up to watch a ranked team play an unbeaten team.
When they expanded the season from 27 to 29 games, they also moved the start date up to the second Friday in November. Maybe they should have kept it where it was before, and added two weeks on to the end of the season instead of onto the beginning.
And, maybe we need better games at this point in the year. The Maryland fans were in top form for the game against Georgetown. So were the GW fans for their game against Virginia. It should be crazy for the IU v Duke and Maryland v UNC games tonight.
I don't know what the issue is. I don't know if it's even just one or two things. I do know that I don't like it. I love college hoops, and want people to care more about it. What happens now shapes what happens later.

It was real. I guess it was after this same tournament several years ago. They flew back on a Sunday, played later that week and got destroyed, and someone on their board said they thought it was due to jetlag. He was serious. Jetlag, from a two hour flight from several days ago that never left the Eastern time zone. I'm sure they just didn't know what jetlag actually was and that they meant to just say the team was tired, but that kind of made it even funnier.

I watched that whole game. Yes VD is a young team, but I think their fan base is forgetting how young Xavier is. XU starts a Freshman/Senior/Junior/Sophomore/Junior. We have a two sophomores and a Senior coming off the bench and two freshmen getting mop up time. VD is younger but they aren't so young that a bit more experience would have made that much of a difference. They had I believe five freshmen log 10 or more minutes. Yes they weren't ready, but this game would have been an L for them in March regardless.
Fact is, VD wasn't winning with a the senior Pierre. He keeps it closer but they are still rocked by 20 or so. Is he 100% coming back in January? I thought it was still up in the air whether he would or not.

Pierre is not in school right now. He was not allowed to enroll for the fall semester. Word is that this is his punishment and he will be coming back starting with the second semester after the holidays, but VD could still rescind his return- which won't happen. He'll be back.

An oldie but a goodie. After Dayton won what was the Old Spice Classic in the 2011-12 season, they played Buffalo at home 3 days later and got smashed 84-55. They followed that up with a 17-point loss at Murray State (the same year Murray won 30+ games) later that week.
They sort of learned their lesson - they've got a week to prepare for a dangerous North Florida team at home this weekend.
I'd worry about Xavier having a letdown against Western Kentucky, but the Hilltoppers found a way to lose by 20+ to Duquesne. DUQUESNE!

We had some friends who encountered food poisining one Thanksgiving with a house full of guests and an inadequate number of bathrooms. It's been years, and they can finally laugh about it. But it took quite a while....

My understanding is that the question is whether or not HE decides to come back....and it is unclear what he will do. The punishment ends at semester. He will be welcomed back. I saw a tweet from Archie on his birthday back in Oct/Nov that made it clear he is considered part of the family....so I think Archie will welcome him back. There has been talk he might just transfer. There is talk he'd take the year off so he can have a full senior year. Not sure if his end of the legal process has any life, but it doesn't really matter as he can't get back in the first semester now, no matter what.

Why are there still people who believe this?

I would not characterize us as young at all. For a pretty high level program, I believe we are middle of the road if not older.
Myles--Junior fourth year with the program
Reynolds---same as myles
Abel---Senior...fifth year in college
Sumner---Freshman
Bluiett--Sophomore
Farr---Senior
Austin---Sophomore
Macura--Sophomore
That's our main rotation with O'Mara, London and Gates getting time here and there. That is 4 guys who are upperclassmen and could be classified as all seniors.
Taking a look at the starters for other Big East Programs...we look to be about middle of the road.
Georgetown---2 SR, 2 SO, 1 FR
Providence----2 JR, 2 SO, 1 FR
Butler----2 SR, 2 JR, 1 SO
Villanova----2 SR, 2 JR, 1 FR
I think we fit in somewhere right in the middle of those four with us being older than G'town and Providence and being younger than Butler and Nova. I checked out those four since those are the ones we are most likely competing with for a championship....you throw in teams like Marquette, Saint Johns, Seton Hall etc and we are much older than those programs.

I think we have nice mix. Freshmen and Sophomores scored 56 points vs. UD. That bodes well not only for this year but for the future.
Rather than what class they are in, I wonder how we compare purely on age. We've had a bunch of guys who have not exactly rushed through their eligibility. I'm sure other teams have some similar situations, but I wonder where we stack up there?

Last year, we were ranked 217th in experience, with our average college age being 1.56 years (freshman count as 0 years, so that's about halfway between sophomore and junior year). That was a moderately young team. This year, we actually have the same average age, 1.56 and are ranked 225th. However, it's a small sample size before the bench shortens. I expect the bench to cut out a freshman or sophomore, so we'll start looking older, but it will always be held down by the point guard position being taken up by a freshman, backed up by a sophomore. Maybe we'll move up to average, but right now the team is still moderately young.

Plus, as someone said, our class years are lower than our players actually are. For instance: Myles, Reynolds, Abell, Sumner and London are all at least one year older than their class is. All have also spent one year more in the program than they have played. That makes a big difference than if Sumner were a true freshman, etc.

The one thing that I will say for Sumner though is that it is my understanding that he did not even oractice with the team last year due to his knees. If that is true he isnt your typical redshirt freshman with a year of practice under his belt. He is about as close to being a true freshman as you can get without actually being one.

He practiced here and there, but yeah, not much in total, and definitely not consistently. Reynolds and Davis really don't count, because they weren't in the system their academic freshman year. They were able to use the weight room and they could hang out with the guys outside of practice, but that's it.
