View Full Version : Xavier v. Dayton

Another thing I'll be curious to see is how both teams respond in their next games - in the past, both teams were prone to "hangover" games.
This isn't one of Western Kentucky's better teams, but there is going to be a little extra spring in their step to play a highly-ranked team. It won't be the same emotional high that Northern Kentucky played with, but this game could be a little hairy for Xavier. They've finished the 5-games-in-10-days gauntlet; now there's a stretch of 4 home games and a road trip to Wake Forest before Christmas Break and Big East play. The coaches are going to do everything in practice to ensure that the players' heads don't get stuck in the clouds after their recent run of wins.
As for our friends up north, they get to host North Florida at home and make a roadie to Vandy. If they're still hung over from yesterday's loss, it would not surprise me if they lost both their games.
Good point. Mack got over one hump by winning the holiday tournament but is now presented with a whole new slew of challenges that come with being a top 15(ish) team. Will be interesting to see how we respond.
Dayton doesn't belong in the Big East. They are better suited for The A-10. They have A-10 talent and can compete in that league. The Big East is just too high of a level for them. They do have a nice little program though and should contend for many years in the NIT or 1st round of the NCAA. Good Luck Dayton I wish you guys luck. :lmao: You know this is going to bite us in our arse. They will go to the final 4 this year watch.
I haven't watched Dayton play outside the AdvoCare Invitational, so I suppose their performance is not an accurate sample size for how good this Flyer team can be. However, I do not think Xavier was/is a good match-up for them. I do not mean this derogatorily, but their players have the size and speed of a decent mid-major team, whereas Xavier looks the part of a top-10 team from a power conference. Our players just seemed, taller, bulkier, and faster.
I think we played an ok game, not great, but just exploited Dayton's lack of size and quickness on the interior, getting a lot of easy lay-ups on second-chance opportunities and great interior feeds. It's not like we shot the eyes out of the ball; we just took advantage of Dayton's lacking physicality.
Dayton will be better as the season progresses (which will help us), but they are not close to the caliber of Xavier.

I expect this team to go through a rough patch at some point.
I don't have "increased expectations" as a fan just b/c we've started the year off well.

I don't know Dayton's roster very well because frankly I don't care to know, but what I do know about Xavier is that we finally have some upperclassmen again that can play....that is something we haven't really had in the past few years and why we "struggled" for a while there. Apologies to Dee and the Big Stain...Dee got the most he could out of what he had and so did Stain. We now have some grown men in Myles, Reynolds, Farr, Remy who have been thru the "wars, " been in the weight room for a few years, and know what it takes to win. Not only do we have those 4 guys but we also have a ton of talent in the freshman and sophomore classes...we have a balanced roster again so we have that going for us, which is nice.

Keeping the guys' heads on straight I would think is going to be a challenge. It was great to win that tournament and beat Dayton in the process, but this team has much bigger goals than winning a tourney in November. Hopefully, we can continue this success into conference play, and well into March.

Every team will be gunning for X when they play them for now and maybe the rest of the season. Furthermore, how many headlines do the guys read and believe how great they are? It's a hard thing to do with teenage and young men. When you keep hearing how great you are, how much of your ego (which you need to be a D1 player in the first place) will be effected?

Yeah ok I guess so. Once we get into league play does this really matter all that much? Villanova has been highly ranked for the last 3-4 years and it doesn't really seem to bother them all that much. Do we really play them any harder than we play other teams? Does it make that much of a difference? I would hope we have coaching staff that can address this and players that are smart enough to understand they have to bring it every game.

I do not understand how A Miller failed to gain some decent recruits after their Elite 8 run. The 6'10 guy they have is a joke. I looked him up and not one other school recruited him. I really expected them to reap some reward from the exposure.
Not to kick a person while their down but really I don't think they have a player on their team that would even be first off the bench if they were on our team.
I think he did get some better big men...but had to kick a few off the team. Or maybe the better way to put it was they were removed from the school? Not sure, whatever it's called when you break the law and are expelled. :read::pointandlaugh:

That "6-10 guy" I believe you are referring to is another in the long line of Pasty White Scarecrows that immobiliy inhabit the foul circle, rooted to the ground by a stick- Sam Miller. Remember the legendary Chip Hare, Sean Finn, Matt Cooper, Kurt Huelsman, James Cripe, Wes Coffee, Matt Kavanaughty, Mark Ashman and William Brady? That is some real quality right there over 25 years.

By the way, the weekend could not have gone anymore gloriously, right?
We win and the Cryers have just enough success to where the bloated sweater vests get all hyped up with them selves, then a Crushing, soul-smashing defeat to the school that they obsess to hate, and are jealous as hell of.

It would have been more fun for me if we could have whipped WSU instead of USC in the semis, but in the long run it was probably better this way. It probably preserved some relationships that may have been damaged.

Yeah, don't forget, Dayton had two important big men kicked off the team and out of school for committing a series of burglaries, then Dyshawn Pierre is serving a semester-long suspension on a sexual assault matter, which is not the first such instance for a Dayton player in the last couple of years.

Don't forget about these guys too- Archie gets a lot out of players he has...but hasn't exactly lit up the recruiting circuit, and has taken some huge risks. Counting the 4 issues you stated above, they have had 12 players leave the team/suspended since 2010....That's a big old WOA

Please allow me to correct you mildly:
Last THREE YEARS.
The Scarecrow, who they reinstated 3 years ago, which, frankly, really made them look like pure hypocrites. That guy was allegedly a true problem up there and got away with a lot at the expense of some coeds, but they allowed him back anyway.
Last year produced felony charges - AND CONVICTIONS - against two of their bigs, and all that happened only after Archie could no longer cover-up for them anymore.
And this year we have the guy who is now on suspension.

In terms of RPI/Seeding I think USC will turn out to be the better win. WSU has a lot of ground to make up and not a lot of opportunities to do it.

I don't think there will be any significant difference between USC and WSU in terms of RPI by Selection Sunday. In fact opponent's winning % is 50% of the formula, and WSU is still likely to have a better winning percentage.
Really, it is likely to essentially be a wash.

I woke up this morning to birds chirping, a beautiful sunny sky and bunnies frolicking on the lawn. Tinkerbell spiced up my morning coffee with a little pixie dust (some white substance anyway) and I was off on a cloud with a euphoric feeling to face my day. (Nothing, I'm retired.) The cops at the Mall seemed glad to see me, and we exchanged gifts beneath their riot shields.
Soon, I spotted a blurb at the Newstand, reminding me of my bliss: X beat the fuckin' shit outta Flyers yesterday!
I DO love frolicking bunnies!

Oh, I remember Jimmie, but he wasn't a Center. He was a perimeter traffic cone. By the way....one of Byron Larkin's greatest lines. When he called Binnie a human traffic cone on the radio broadcast, I nearly fell off my chair.

I also want to think we ran the score up as a thank you for that wonderful hospitality we were shown during our NCAA game at The Dump, for the way the Mack family was treated at The Dump and hey, because they are Dayton. We needed to show them they are woefully under qualified for Big Boy Basketball.
Wins over UC and UD, a signature road win (Michigan), a holiday tournament trophy instead of just participation medals, victories over the mythical Miami Valley Conference, a top 10 ranking, a deep team that can attack and defend in so many vicious ways.

Any word on whether the trophy arrived safely?
So, does it make me a lousy Xavier fan because I'd hope for all of our opponents (even Dayton and UC) do well after we play them? After all, this IS good for Xavier. Makes them quality wins for us. I'm focused on a team called Xavier. If they both went winless for the rest of the year and it cost us a better seed, that would not make me feel good. I know it's very amusing, and easy to make fun of, but I really do hope they play well enough to make our double digit beat downs statement wins. (Am I about to be banished?) Plenty of time for them to be embarrassed after the regular season and our seed is announced.

I think this sums up my thoughts perfectly. I know, LOGICALLY, that any team we play helps us more the more they win. On that level, I "root" for all our scheduled teams in their other games. ON THE OTHER HAND, a loss, by UD and UC in particular, does not upset me in the least. Smiles may sometimes even make their way on to my face. Logically, though, I'm crushed. :)
