Today is a monumental day. On this day in 1973, two cataclysmic things occurred- Xavier's last official NCAA. Football game, and My wedding. Xavier beat Toledo, and my Brother-In-Law's Alma Mater, to finish the year at 5-5-1. After that, Father Mulligan turned coat, and dropped football. To be fair, the program was losing between $250,000 and $300,000 a year and the school couldn't afford it. As to Mulligan, he would have just as soon dropped athletics all together, him being a Philosophy Professor and not seeing the value of sports to the school at all. Thank Gawd, Dr. Bill Dailey and the XU Athletics Board had other ideas, helped form the MCC and saved XU's program, or else, Xavier would be Loyola New Orleans right about now.

As to the marriage, yep, Trophy Wife is still around, and bossing me around. So, 42 years with no change in status. Still no football, and still Married. It's Cool.

I loved Corcoran and football as part of the college experience, loved our players and Ed Biles...... but was appalled at the cost of the program. It was stunting all of the athletic program, not the least basketball. Painful but absolutely necessary in those precarious financial days.

It took almost 10 more years to find a Bball coach, and Bill Dailey and his crew deserve all credit for perseverance and judgment in making that happen. We are all enjoying the fruits of that labor.

Happy anniversary. Remember, I wrote the obituary. Covered the last three seasons.Very sad.Debt far greater than ever listed. Still, they could have gone D3, but considering the competition not a good idea. Fr.M didn't stay around for 1 on 1s . Jerk. But thanks to Mac, Bill Daly and many others, we have the premier hoops program and arena in the best league in the nation. And a damn fine coach, too. Go Muskies.
