Time to bring the pain.
I'm glad it's NKU, because I have a little conflict with the Bills vs the Cheaters on MNF. Recording both and get to the hoops when I can. Really want to see Gates, O'Mara, London getting time.

The cheaters? Yeah they are 9-0 and must be cheating this year. Some people will always be delusional. Jealousy sucks. As do the Bills.

You don't have to get your feelings hurt. I never said they aren't great. They are. Brady is the best ever. And they cheat. If they didn't they wouldn't admit to cheating, pay huge fines and forfeit draft choices. Again. But, those are the facts. Do they cheat on every play? Do they have to cheat to win? Irrelevant.

Is anyone on here attempting to watch with FoxSportsGo? I just tried to log in and am getting a message that "This program is unavailable. Program availability is determined by your TV provider and your subscription package." I have watched several Xavier games on the site before so it shouldn't be anything with my login info. It says the game is live, so I'm just not sure what's going on. Anybody else having this problem?
EDIT: NVMD I'm not sure what the problem was, but it seems to have corrected itself.

Not to nitpick, but WVU should probably be ranked, only lost 2 players off a Sweet 16 team last year, and a full court press all game, and they have some pretty good players (Devin Williams, Jaysean Paige, Esa Ahmed, etc.), plus I'm sure the full-court pressure had something to do with it.

Yeah it's just November but minus sumner, these are the same guys as last year having trouble. I think I see some improvement, but it is still an issue.

I think with Sumner, Remy, and JP all being 6'4 or taller, add in they all can move, our perimeter defense will get straightened out. Our guards are big enough to challenge shots and I look for Sumner to even block a jump shot occasionally. Just a letdown game. I thought Jalen got "handled" to be honest. He's never started out a season very good at X but seems to start putting it together about midway through. Played bad but we got so much talent and options, the game was never really in doubt. Adjusting to the new style of officiating is tough on our big, strong upper class men.

Thank you. NKU crossed the river for its Super Bowl last night. They came into the Cintas Center to give it their all.
Beyond that, at least two of their 3's were from ridiculous range; I doubt those specific shots - from those locations on the floor - are regarded as a go-to option for that team.
Then we had some of the dumb bunnies we missed.
I guess that reads like I'm trying to make excuses, but that isn't my intent. I'm sure Mack was mad for very good reasons. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that a low-level program came into our place and gave it their all under a new coach who may have some promise - they made it tougher than expected.
Xavier responded with something like just enough effort again, and that left Mack displeased.

I felt bad for Stockton as he made mistake after mistake.
JP was at the line in the first half and he missed his first free throw and made his second one. Stockton proceeded to say JP was a perfect 16 for 16 from the free throw line this year. He JUST missed one right in front of you!!
Also, a NKU player threw up a shot and Stockton said he missed as the ball went through the hoop and there was a good 30 seconds of silence where you could tell Stockton was trying to figure out what happened and probably heard the PA announcer say "made basket" and the scoreboard changed.

I like that we "sucked" in a comfortable win. I don't like the lack of intensity and focus, but we didn't drop a game and they should learn from this.

This is a true sign that Xavier really is a top notch program. When you can just show up, play with no energy, and still win by double digits, you really have something special

Man, is that the shortest press conference on record?
That was one unhappy coach.
And Gates took the brunt with the reference to minutes played, having a TO and lofting one into the stands.
Hope they are ready for Thursday.
Edit: to follow up on my comment, you know I went and saw Gates play a couple times last year. As opposed to some of our guys, he doesn't exhibit a lot of emotion when he plays. Hope it doesn't hurt him and be taken as a lack of effort.

I think Mack is just tired of the crappy attitude going into these tournaments the last few years and wanted to fire up the troops, and yeah, their play was lackluster.

Paul, you know as well as I that this hope is almost guaranteed to not come true. Cue the next time Gates misses an assignment: "Look at him! He just doesn't care!"

I sat through the game, never felt a whole lot of energy, but also never felt that there was any chance X would actually lose. As much as I disliked the overall effort (A few players excepted - Blueitt for one), they STILL won by 12. No energy and still win by 12. It used to take 40 minutes of all out effort to squeak out wins against lower level teams. While they do need to step it up, I take solace in the talent level that can just show up and beat some teams. IT WAS NOT THIS WAY IN THE PAST. It was not that way just a year or two ago. Evansville and Bowling Green from two seasons ago come to mind. I am hoping that X is now talented enough that when they have an early season blip while they put it all together that instead of a loss to learn from, they come out with a win to learn from. It's a much better feeling to leave Cintas or anywhere with a win and something to work on than a loss and stuff to work on.

I think something has to be said about going from playing a top 25 team on the road, to playing a team that isn't much of a challenge is hard to get up for. That's not an excuse.....just reality. Now, some of the guys trying to get more playing time...........I have a hard time understanding why they wouldn't be busting their ass. Lets hope we see a much different effort level tomorrow.

True, but I remember some good X teams that would have lost this game after a big win.

I'm not sure Xavier has lost to a team as bad as NKU in the last 20 years.
The Massey Ratings comparison (a compilation of 19 different computer rankings) ranks NKU #303 out of 351 teams.

Wofford? , Miami O-2007, Ball State- 2003? Dookcane, anytime. Fordham-2005? All really bad.

Winner winner, chicken dinner. Someone else alluded to it in another thread, but there's a part of Mack that has to be ecstatic that he could go fire and brimstone on the team after a subpar effort against NKU. That effort is going to net a 1-2 record in Orlando at best. Given how Monmouth already beat UCLA and nearly beat USC, even that game is no gimme.
You don't necessarily want your season to be peaking right now, but you don't want to lay an egg in a tournament that is winnable right now.

All substantially better than 2015-16 NKU. That Fordham team actually didn't suck.

I'm not so sure about that, Go. That was a year where GW ran the table in the A-10 regular season and could only salvage an 8 seed out of that. Xavier was 10th out of 14 teams that season (and still got a 14 seed as the A-10 autobid winner that year).

All from Sagarin ratings:
2005 Fordham - #174 (also on the road)
2003 Ball State - #150 (on the road)
2007-08 Miami - #85 (on the road)
2012-13 Wofford - #252 (okay, this is relatively close...but we all knew that Xavier '13 was shitty)
2008-09 Duquesne - #86 (and on the road)

Yeah, that OR team was solid. Losing to them wasn't embarrassing, especially with personnel losses for the game. Getting destroyed was the embarrassing part.
Wofford is by far the closest, coming in at 259 on Kenpom, 21 spots ahead of NKU's (way too early) ranking. 21 spots is still significant, though.

This.
We didn't play all that well and played with little energy. It happens and I don't think it's a big deal - it's one game and we're 4-0. However, NKU is not good (arguably very, very bad), hence the reason for Mack's disgust in the post game presser.

I still remember Dee Davis as a Frosh having to start at PG that game. Pretty cool to go from the inexperienced/unsure Frosh, to the hard nose, black eye, road warrior as a Senior. Taking down UC at UC, going toe to toe with the best guards in the Big East, and fearlessly leading the Muskies to the Sweet 16!

Yes! I still remember people saying that Dee was worthless after that game and that Justin Martin (!) was the only one worth a damn. Dee was a freshman backing up an All-American but was suddenly thrust into a role he was not prepared for, with the starting 2 and 3 (read: ballhandlers/playmakers) also out of the game. What did people expect?
It was also a good example of not judging freshmen by their first chance for extended minutes. Frequently that first time doesn't look pretty, but it doesn't say major things about the player's long-term prospects.

Happens every year. Cant understand, with the type of program we have (upper classment developing and leading the way usually annually), why people write off players as worthless or not any good so soon in their careers.

Choosing a player to piss and moan over all year long is a long-standing tradition at Xavier not unlike standing and clapping until the first basket is made. Other notable players to make such an appearance on the list include Kenny Frease, Dante Jackson, Jamel McLean, Lionel Chalmers and others. Kenny, in my opinion, got hit the hardest. Certain posters on this board even referred to him as a derogatory word for a female part of the anatomy. Good times. Great tradition.
