What do you think, X +4 in this one?

I really don't like this BTN deal. Supposedly Fox owns 51% of it. Yet the Gavitt games info indicates the games will be on FS1, BTN, or one of BTN's "partners" which are ESPN, and couple others.
So, the Georgetown game was at Maryland and on ESPN2, not the BTN.
ESPN, ESPN2 and FS1 are on most regular sports packages I think. The BTN (at least down here) is on a different sports package with NFL Network, and others. Those have a limited audience who will pay for the additional package.
Oh well.

0 for 2 against the spread this season. 0 for 3 against spread after Friday.
Monday against NKU will hopefully be the first cover then go on a roll with Alabama next (Dayton won by 32). Xavier better put a stomping on the Tide for an enjoyable Thanksgiving.

I don't know about the spread, but no matter the final number, X has to get off to a much better first half start than they have the past two games. They were able to pick it up in the second half at home and win the first two games. If they have a start like that in Ann Arbor, then it will be a much steeper hill to climb in the second half. I don't know squat about Michigan's team, but I've seen X twice now and this is my assessment.

Oh man.
If I were Belein I would double Jalen, hound and double Sumner up and down the floor, let Miles shoot 3s. I'm not sure any Muskie can guard
Lavert 1/1. Mack will 1-3-1 until Michigan is making 3s from the seams.
Neither John nor Chris has listened to me yet, but I will be there to offer my opinions and advice up in 214' row 39.

Xavier probably wont be able to guard LeVert or Walton. Not sure how Irvin will be coming off back surgery, I don't think he made a shot in their opener. I would be hesitant to run too much 1-3-1 against them with all of their shooters. I would rather play man and make players other than LeVert and Walton beat us.

11-19-2015, 08:51 AM
I would also guess that XU plays more zone in this game.
Should be a fun game to see how they do at this point in the season. I feel like these first games flew by so quick they probably haven't learned everything the coaches will eventually have them executing. (If that makes sense.)
XMuskieFTW

Really if we can shoot a similar percentage as them both from 2 and 3 we should win. We will outrebound them by a lot.
xufan2434
11-19-2015, 10:38 AM
I think this is a tough game for X. Michigan looked really good in the opener, although obviously against Elon. But I think X is going to struggle on the defensive end and might have some rough stretches on offense that prevent them from keeping up. Should be a pretty hostile environment. All that said, I could see X winning but either way will be a great learning experience for a lot of the guys early into the season. Especially guys like Sumner and LAJ. Last year we were wondering if they'd ever get a good road win. Well even if they don't win tomorrow, I think it'll go a long way in helping them be better on the road this year

Where are we drinking?
The most vexing question of all!
I think we look sort of dysfunctional at times in these first few games of the post-Stainbrook era. Stain was such a great passer and he attracted a huge crowd. We were able to run the offense inside out and we haven't been doing that effectively as of yet. That is what Mack wants to do and we need to get there.
I love this team and I like our chances everytime we play, but it looks like it may take some time to get everyone on the same page and working cohesively as a unit. I am convinced that Mack will find a way to blend this impressive bevy of talent. He always does. We could be scary good by the time March rolls around.

You might be able to stream the game through your phone/tablet using the Big 10 To Go (BTN2Go) app. Cincinnati Bell has some reciprocity... just like the WatchESPN app. You just have to find Cincinnati Bell under the provider list when you log in.
If it will show the live feed of the network feed I think Fioptics customers should be good. If it doesn't, the game might be on their "Plus" tier, but you can register for a month's worth of service for about $10 if you select a Big 10 school package... you'll see it in the app.
I'm going to test streaming that feed to my TV tonight through a Chromecast or FireTV stick.

The Toledo Alumni Chapter & the Detroit Chapter have teamed up to offer a pre-game reception on November 20th from 6 pm - 8 pm at the Sheraton Ann Arbor Hotel for the Xavier vs UM men's basketball game. There will be heavy appetizers and a cash bar. The cost of the reception is $20 at the door or $15 in advance (kids are free!). Please consider coming to cheer on the muskies with fellow Xavier fans! He doesn't have to play like Stain in order for inside out basketball to be effective. He actually did a decent job last year with the inside out game, and the main thing this year has been struggling with double teams. I don't expect him to exploit the double team to the degree that Stain could, but at the very least he could just not turn it over and work the ball back around. Reynolds is a threat when he has the ball in the post. Getting it to him there forces opponents to deal with him, which Xavier can put to their advantage.

You say kids are free, but my kids are 14 and 12 year old boys. They don't get kids meals anymore, and the 14 year old is taller than me. If my kids get in they will eat all of the appetizers. The link that you sent didn't say anything about kids, so I would need some clarification.
Also, it doesn't look like I can order them anymore. I am guessing within 24 hours they shut down the advance admission price and I will just have to pay $20 at the door. It doesn't sound like a bad deal if I can get the kids in, but I would probably pass if I have to pay $60 at the door and just hit a pizza joint that has beer.
I am torn too. I wanna meet up with the Xavier Nation, but I also wanna be out and about in Ann Arbor instead of a hotel reception room. Who knows. I am getting excited none the less. I am guessing that Big 10 events are alcohol free affairs? Ohio State Football was alcohol free when I went years ago, so I am guessing that hasn't changed.

Not that this is breaking news, but if we can (1) stay in front of Lavert and force him to kick and (2) close out on their 3 shooters and contest their 3's, we should have a chance.
However, if it's defensive 'education' time for Sumner, JP and TB...we will have a hard time. If our bigs need to rotate, get stuck out of position and foul because our guards are getting beat by laziness/carelessness, than a team with young guard play can hang their heads.
Awesome game to figure out where we are.

This. Our nonconference has actually been pretty subpar since we joined the big east and don't give me that Murray state bs. We should be scheduling 2-3 ganes like this in non conference aside from the tournaments in my opinion.

This impressive win vs a top 25 team on the road is going to open eyes for a lot of critics. Many players with 4 fouls, but no fear, this team is deep. Farr is a rebounding machine. Our FT shooting has been great so far, and that's important since teams are going to foul a lot with the new rules. Wonder if X would be ranked next week.

47-29 in the rebounding dept. may have been the difference in this game. (well, and having 4 guys in double figures with great balanced scoring doesn't hurt either)

That was about as good as a win as you can get.
Road win, against ranked opponent.
Shoot well from the field.
Shoot well from the FT line.
Rebound well, and continually follow shot off long missed shots.
Balanced scoring.
One of the better victories we've witnessed recently.

18 of those boards being on the offensive end made it even better. I loved those times we got 4th chances to score.
And on the hating Seth Davis bandwagon... I had a friend over that knows nothing about Xavier or Michigan basketball. About halfway through the game he says, "This announcer doesn't know anything, does he?"

Lots of positives, of course, but I feel like Remy Abell really had a standout game. He had to guard Lavert all night. Yeah, he scored 29, but it might have been much worse. Abell never gave up. Played 29 minutes. 15 points. No turnovers. Just a great game from him.

I just got home from the game ... this is what we discussed on our ride home from Ann Arbor. Both times when Michigan pulled within two points, the crowd really got into the game. Both times, X responded with ice-cold threes. Michigan never recovered from the second one.
My friend and neighbor whose son attends U of M said after the game that Xavier dominated every facet of the game: shooting, rebounding, foul shooting, and most notably effort and hustle. Thank you, JP.
X was represented well in the arena. It helps that our fans had more to cheer about than theirs, but our contingent was quite vocal. I wasn't sitting with the majority of X fans, but we were enjoying their chatter all night. Then, after the game, X fans essentially took over the concourse area in Crisler as the crowd streamed out of the building chanting "Let's go X!" Made my hair stand on end.
I almost didn't buy tickets to this game. My son plays in a hoops tourney at noon Saturday and we were on the fence due to the arrival home at midnight after the game. Couldn't be more pleased with our decision to go. This is a fun, fun team to watch.

Agreed for the most part. We were stuck in front of a group of four students who were just plain ignorant. I'm no saint, but the constant flow of F-bombs with two 11-year-old kids sitting right in front of them got kind of old. The student sitting directly behind me kept saying, "I can't believe we're gonna lose to this sh*tty f*ckin' team!" He also yelled "And one!" every single time Michigan put up a shot. Every. Single. Time. But I was a college student once, too ... I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they probably engaged in some pregame activity before this 9 PM tip on a Friday night. And with the 16-pt destruction, they are instantly forgiven.
Other than those guys, everyone else was a peach.
This is an effort even John Wooden would be proud of.

This type of interaction and others that were mentioned are very typical of what I've come to expect from the Michigan fan base. They are respectful and courteous. I was at the Toledo win over Michigan at the Big House in 2008. Thought for sure I would get killed leaving the game. Quite the opposite.
Was at tonight's game and was so proud of this team! From the jump, X played with toughness ident and intensity! Going into the game I was worried about Michigans 3 pt offense, and X played really tough D. Michigan had to really work for their points, and even when they hit a shot X didn't get down. This was possibly the best man to man D X has played in 2 years.
X's depth really paid off as fouls were being called frequently. Coach Mack wisely sat Ed most of the 1st half after getting 2 quick fouls, and it paid off BIG time in the 2nd half. Solid games from Tre, Remy, JP, Myles, Larry, James, Jalen, and Ed. They wanted it more than Michigan and it showed. Also, X's inside advantage was very evident throughout the game.
Way to go fellas!!!!

People are talking about how much better we look and how long we are. This is not meant to be a knock on the guy because he was so good offensively but I don't think it's a coincidence we are more active on the boards and better defensively now that stainbrook isn't here anymore. Once again let me say I liked stains lot and his court vision was second to none, but he won't be mistaken for the guy with the highest vertical or the quickest feet. On the defensive end that hurt with lack of blocks and little rebounding. Having bigger leaner taller post players who can jump is helping a lot in both ends of the floor. We have an interior right now that very few schools can match up with and if sumner keeps developing and we can put a 6'6 monster on the point we will always have a huge advantage down low. With this win and what I saw tonight though I fully expect us to not lose a damn game to seton hall this year lol

Great performance last night, but it's only game 3. Michigans bigs this year are average at best, and X is a really bad matchup for them. I think X played their best man to man D in years last night, but that doesn't mean they won't have issues against a team with better/capable big men.

It's great to have an abundance of ball handlers with the length to guard the perimeter shooters. For those who were concerned about the point guard position I think think this game laid that to rest. The next big test will be when we play a team with a strong inside presence. Do we have some big men that can guard them without fouling out? We need another big to step up besides Reynolds and Farr.
For those who haven't noticed, Bluiett plays much bigger than his size and is a solid rebounder in addition to being a scorer. He holds his own against bigger men and is very difficult for them to guard.

And what a great coaching staff we have!!! Mack is embarrassing his handful of critics. He's recruiting a group of athlete this school hasn't touched in past years. 4 stars consistently and eventually will break through with a few 5's IMO. The move to the BIG EAST is part of this success.

My favorite is the guy who insists that Michigan should have won, that they just needed to make their free throws, hit their threes, and defend well. Um, if Michigan hits their average on free throws, threes, and twos, they still lose by 8, and Xavier's defense might have had something to do with missed field goals. Plus, Michigan's defense was good; Xavier just has more offensive options than starters.

They described the game as Xavier "pulling away in the end," as if it was a close, hard-fought game for most of it and Xavier just had a bit extra at the end. Sure, they pulled away, just from the 7 to 9 point margin they were hovering around for most of the second half.

It's one thing to have talented players.
It's another thing to have talented players who buy in and are flying around the court, chasing loose balls, crashing the boards and following their misses to get second chance points.
I love what I'm seeing from the entire TEAM right now.

Congrats to a well fought game, but I really do need to give props to Mack for leaving Reynolds in with fouls. Most would have sat him down, but Mack allowed him to stay in a rhythm, as well as, having Jalen learn that he will get all the PT he wants, provided he plays within himself and not let emotion get the best of him.
Great coaching and great response by Jalen and the whole team!

I watched in a bar last night....with no sound. I just finished rewatching it on the Big 10 stream, with sound. There were fluctuations in the lead, and it felt like X was often in control (maybe moreso today...since I knew the outcome), but the game was a two point game with about 8 minutes left. It was hard fought, but X separated in the final 8 minutes.
I've seen a lot of complaining about Davis...and he's not my favorite, but I honestly didn't think he was bad at all during the game. His observations were mostly on point. He was aware of the changes the team made from last year, of Farr's development, of the strengths of both teams. I'm really not sure what the problem with him was.
Chris Mack out coached Belein. We were better prepared, made better adjustments.
I was surprised at the extra timeout to end the half. We have the lead, already used the "take it or lose it" TO. IT ALMOST LOOKED LIKE A DESIGNED TO DRAW A FOUL PLAY. Miles certainly waited for the defender to bite on the fake. Three straight free throws, real momentum into the locker room.

Terrific, gritty win, but was anyone be else less than impressed with this Michigan team? I have no idea what the rest of he b10 looks like this year, but I think they could have some real trouble with such a soft front court. Levert is a stud though.
On our end, lots to be happy with but the biggest surprise to me so far is how aggressive Sumner is. He's fearless in a way Tu was as a frosh, and while I'm not thrilled with some of his TOs and the possessions where he keeps the ball in his hands for 20 seconds before driving, he has blown me away so far and I'm really excited to watch him progress.

They seemed like a tournament team but not a top-25 team. However, we should keep in mind that their major weakness (rebounding) is something that Xavier in particular could exploit better than most teams in the country, and they didn't really have any athletic slashers on the wing that could punish our slower-footed wings. It was a bad matchup for Michigan, kind of like how last year Xavier was a bad matchup for Georgetown.

Lot's of great observations/points from you guys...
Our guards certainly held their own. I would have liked to see more ball pressure from Larry, but Michigan's guards are bigger so I get why he couldn't be as aggressive as Ed was in the 2nd half.
I could not be more impressed with Tre's progression from last year to this year. He played SOLID D, even guarding LeVert a few times, and hit CLUTCH shots. He's in great shape and is playing with tremendous confidence. Yesterday he did a great job letting the game come to him and not forcing anything. Just awesome stuff!
Bluiett reminds me a lot of Justin Cage except that he's a better scorer than Justin was.
I had the same thought. He has the solid frame, doesn't mind banging and doing the dirty work, but certainly has a better jump shot. Cage could do some work down low with the right matchup, and he was the ultimate warrior. Tre's just a Soph, but I see a lot of Justin Cage in him...and that's a VERY GOOD thing!
They described the game as Xavier "pulling away in the end," as if it was a close, hard-fought game for most of it and Xavier just had a bit extra at the end. Sure, they pulled away, just from the 7 to 9 point margin they were hovering around for most of the second half.
I'll say this, X was up 12 with 4 minutes to go and I was still afraid Michigan might go on a game tying run. That is how explosive their offense can be. X forced them into a bad offensive rhythm, but they could have gotten it going if one or two of those shots fall.
That was a really ballsy decision. I thought Mack was crazy, especially since Jalen wasn't exactly "minding his own business" if you will. ;-) That T on Jalen was BS. He barely hung on the rim. The 4th foul was a "wrong place, wrong time" sequence. Jalen could take a few notes from JP on how to agitate your opponent, express emotion, and not draw the ire of the officials. Ha!
Great job by Coach Mack and the entire coaching staff! There was tremendous communication going on continuously throughout the game between the players and many of the coaches. Total team effort. Also, that last TO and drawn 3-pt foul was savvy as He11! I don' t know if that was "the play" or if it was Myles "old man" balling LeVert, it was awesome to get the 3 FT's and stretch the lead to 9 at the Half.

I think Michigan is a good team and will be fine. X is a really bad matchup for them in that both teams have a lot of similar players...except down low where X is way better. Add that Irvin and Spike are both knocking off post surgery rust, their PG Walton hasn't taken control of the offense, and LeVert was trying to do a bit too much on his own. This takes nothing away from what X did though. I'm just saying Michigan has a great coach in Beilein and they will get better.

Yes, at one point in the second half Xavier was only up two. Actually, twice in the second half it was only a one-possession game. However, there were also a couple times where Xavier was up double digits before the closing minutes. The reason I didn't mention these instances on either side is because they were the outliers, and the 7 to 9 range was the much more common margin (Thinking about it, more like 6 to 9, but still). Xavier generally controlled the half, and though Michigan clawed back to make it close a couple times, Xavier immediately responded and pushed it back to a multi-possession game.
I should clarify that when I hear "a hardfought game" with one team "pulling away in the end," I picture a game that is back and forth with multiple lead changes until one team puts their foot on the gas in the closing minutes. This was decidedly not that. This was instead a game where Xavier controlled the late first half and most of the second half before dominating at the end. Michigan got close enough for marginal hope but they were rarely actually in the game.
I really don't care one way or another about Seth Davis, finding him just mediocre, but just that line annoyed me.

That T on Jalen was BS. He barely hung on the rim.
Definitely. My friend said that the refs should make him earn his Ts (and he likely will). That "hanging on the rim" is exactly what happens to just about any player that goes up for a dunk only to lose control of the ball just before flushing it in. It's a natural moment of hesitation because it doesn't feel right to grab on to the rim without sensing the ball going through the net.
In general, I despise the "hanging on the rim" rule. It seems like 90% of the time, a player gets called for it when he is just hanging on until he can safely drop down. Apparently refs want dunkers to clip other players on the way down, so they can half-flip and hit their heads on the ground.

I don't know how to box quotes so here goes my final points
1. I didn't think sumner played very well. Had a couple good plays but I thought he tried to push the ball and had a few really dumb turnovers when nothing was there. Not blasting him but I could tell it was his first big game as a young guy. He will learn from it and get better.
2. Myles Davis deserves a ton a credit. Taking over the point duties when sumner had fouls trouble was huge especially since we had only 2 first half turnovers with him at the point.
3. I know it's only 3 games my point was not we are a lock for the final 4 my point is having 2 big men who are long lean strong and quick allows them to block shots and position for rebounds better than stain ever could.
4. I don't think you can compare cage and Trevon. Cage was longer and was a very good driver and inside scorer who developed an outside game. Trevon has the outside game and is learning how to play more inside. Almost the complete opposite.
5. Finally I loved the grit and poise this team showed. How many times in that second half did Michigan hit 2 big threes or make 2 big plays to cut the lead to one possession then remy jp or whoever would instantly put the crowd back in their seats? I saw a swagger and a confidence in this team I have not seen since The Run. No one looked scared of the environment or michigans runs. That is probably my biggest take from this game. One more note Michigan will be very good in the big 10 with probably a top 2 or 3 finish. That is a top 5 seed ncaa team we just beat in their place

I could be wrong, and I'm certainly too lazy to look it up, but I think I remember hearing that if you go for a dunk, miss and try for the rebound while still hanging on the rim, it's an automatic T. I could be wrong on that and likely am, but if that is the case, Reynolds certainly did that.

I wonder if the rule for hanging on the rim comes from the same place that the rule about not dunking in pregame warm-ups came from. The reason the pregame rule was around was because they didn't want to break backboards. Since the NCAA got rid of the pregame rule, I wonder if there is a chance they reconsider the hanging on the rim rule. Players would never have to compromise their safety to avoid a foul, and if a player does hang on the rim too long, the other team could push the ball up the court quickly, which is punishment enough.

Ah, I missed him touching the ball in that crowd of players. That would explain it. I thought it bounced off his body after he lost control of it or got stripped going up for the dunk.

Michigan's bigs are soft as Charmin. If you watched warm ups you could see how much more athletic our bigs were. Even the dunking show that XU put on right before the 12:00 pregame mark. There was no comparison.
They are way to dependent on LeVert to drive and kick. Completely a one-trick pony and will have to find themselves quick before conference play begins. Just imagine every B1G coach is watching that game film from last night.

As someone else mentioned, the technical was not for hanging on the rim. It was for reaching for and touching the ball while still hanging on the rim. Refs aren't going to call a technical for hanging on the rim if someone is below you. Like on Sumners dunk against Miami. If he had simply hung htere while the space cleared, he wouldn't have gotten the T. Instead of hanging on the rim, he did a legit pullup while hanging. That was why he got the technical.

There has been a lot of noise lately about teams "going small," but I think in actuality teams are going more athletic. Luckily for us we have players that are both tall and athletic and that give us a huge advantage on rebounding without sacrificing much if any on defense.

I think it's the 3 pointer. If you have a big guy that doesn't give you much offense from the post, plus can't guard a smaller 4 on the defensive end, it's a double whammy. Yes, the dreaded double whammy. Might as well put someone the floor that gives you some 3 offense and defense.

He even screwed up by saying at the 6:34 mark in the 2nd half, WE need to start scoring if Michigan is going to come back. That was icing on the cake after all the other comments.

So true. Yet another awesome benefit of being in the Big East. Even better was going into the game knowing that this wouldn't be X's only chance for a big win this year. And, best yet, we were 23/26 at the FT line. That's 88.5%! That could be huge the way games are being called and IF we can stay well above average.

One other thing that I don't remember anyone mentioning...Yet again, X "Balled Out" in the "Blackout" Uni's. As soon as I saw they were in black I was geeked.
