After a dismal season that produced the program’s worst record since 1967, the worst scoring average since 1952 and 24 games lost to player suspensions, head coach Kim Anderson hopes his encore draws better reviews and, ultimately, keeps him employed at his alma mater for a third season and beyond.
There’s a striking difference with this year’s team, which tips off its regular season at 8 p.m. Friday against Wofford: These guys, players and coaches alike, appear to actually like each other.

Damn that sucks. I have class from 7 to 8:50. I was hoping it would be 7 or 7:30, so I could catch the last part, not just the first few minutes.

I have mediation tomorrow. It was already going to be dicey about getting there. Moving it up 1/2 hour didn't help.

Big 10 also does the 6:30/8:30 game times. Personally I think it should be 6:30/9:00 since most games are not done in 2 hours anymore and the 8:30 tip just ends up getting pushed back.

That would be more honest, but it would decrease viewership. 8:30 sounds a lot better than 9, especially on a weekday, when someone is considering whether to watch a game.

There are a number of posters here who complain the seats aren't full 15 minutes before tipoff. With a 6:30 start, there will be LOTS of empty seats at tipoff. I'm going to try leaving work by 4:30 to have enough time to get there by 6:30.

FS1 always shows their first game at 6:30 when they have a double header night to hopefully avoid missing the start of the 9:00 PM game.

I don't mind I can set the DVR to record watch the first half fast forwarding through commercials and halftime and will usually catch back up with live action with 10 to 13 minutes to go in the game. Pretty nice little system there

I cant even count the times I have had to watch the entire game on DVR hours or even a day after it was on all the while avoiding the internet or giving a warning text to my friends and families to not text me about XU game. It has worked perfectly (with a lot of effort) many times, and been a disaster others. Most people think I am very weird for being able to watch a DVR'd game hours later but with the Giants and Muskies I have to at least try.

Where is everyone?

Reynolds has got to clean up his interior passing. It's like he assumes he has all day to make these touch passes. He has to check the floor to see what kind of spacing he actually has to execute the pass.

Welp, that was pretty ugly. Our defense is not good. A lot of standing around on offense. I'm not sure how we scored 37 points. Anyway, it's early. I expect a much better 2nd half. There's always going to be bad stretches this early in the season.

First Half Positives:

-Myles, when attacking the rim.
-Macura displaying his microwave tendencies.
-Farr's rebounding.

Negatives
-Turnovers
-Lack of post presence on offensive end
-Reynolds

Hit the INside of the net, not the OUTside of the rim? Oh, and maybe stop the ball penetration?

I think we are going to have a pretty good team this year but there are two things I'm concerned with when we start playing some really good teams.

1.) Perimeter defense...frankly it's terrible. Good teams are going to destroy us offensively if this does not improve.

2.) Offensive production in the frontcourt. Luckily Farr and Reynolds have both had one good game and one bad one each separately. What's concerning is if they both have a few bad ones on the same night....these guys need to become more consistent throughout the season.

James Farr was a man tonight. I thought Bluiett and Macura played well. Myles Davis did a nice job driving the basketball. Larry Austin has very active hands on defense. As mentioned we have to get more from Reynolds. We have a lot to improve on, but this team has a high ceiling.

Good second game to watch. Not a complete game by anyone tonight by far. But collectively we have some great parts that will be hard to slow down by a lot of teams.

I think a lot of the fouls on Reynolds and Farr were pretty weak, but at the same time I think this team really needs to focus on fundamental positioning when they square up to their man. Too much rushing and bumping automatically.

I guess I'm still confused about when Mack can and can't call a timeout, as he clearly called one during the middle of a play starting in motion.

Mack himself is no longer allowed to call a timeout when the ball is in play. Someone on the floor has to call it instead.

Gonna need Jalen bad on Friday. If Michigan has a weak spot it is definitely down low. Gonna be quite the test on Friday. Great chance for a solid win. On the road. Top 25 opponent. Loss doesn't hurt anything but a win would be unbelievable to keep in the pocket come March.

Looking over the team stats it's obvious our rebounding and second chance shots played a major role in the win, not to mention MU sending us to the line a bunch.

But their FG % and attempts was really too high for us to win without that. The scary part is Reynolds and Farr won't always be out rebounding their opponent, so the man to man really DOES need to improve greatly.

We need to shoot for getting teams at 40% or lower.

If not, then yeah, they do really look bad to mention Missouri and not France. Sorry if I sound insensitive, but a few upset students does not warrant the Moment of Silence in comparison to 100' s killed in a string of terrorist attacks. I know if affected our opponent, and there is precedent when we had one before a Creighton game that occurred right after a shopping mall massacare in Omaha, but again Death and hurt feelings are not even near the same,

Waggy - Maybe France didn't pay Xavier enough coin for a Moment of Silence. (Referring of course, to the expose that all those heart warming "Soldier of the Game" or "Military Tributes" during pro sports are NOT out of the patriotic goodwill of the team, but are bought and paid for by the US Military just like any other advertising spot.

Then again it is also a case of agonizing over "Getting the misery right": (paraphrase of Evita) - What, how often, and how long is appropriate and proper?

But in this case, with it still hot news, it was glaringly missing. I think I had read about France on Social Media either right before or during the game on Friday, and later in the game when the Fox 19 News spot started up on the ribbon board with the words "Breaking News" against a red background, I was thinking they were going to break into the game to announce it.

Didn't read back through the thread completely, but was anyone else annoyed with the ridiculous moment of silence for mizzou? Their protests were based on very little evidence, if any. Complete joke. Especially the kid complaining about health insurance costs for grad students when his dad makes over 6 million a year

Was there a group of students protesting in front of cintas? I didn't care enough to walk over and look

I'm glad I missed that, because I would have been very annoyed. Someone else said they would have booed. There's your recap.

I'd have been more interested in taking up a collection for the people who lost their jobs over what appears to be a bunch of whiney nonsense.

College kids are increasingly becoming a bunch of whiney self absorbed idiots, that take offense to everything. It's probably a product of the helicopter parents that hover over their kids, making sure they are never offended. I have half a mind to market a shirt on college campuses with the school logo, and the phrase, " We're all a bunch of whiney pussies "

I'm guessing that you are not in marketing. Just a hunch.

I don't think he gets anyone's minutes at this point. He's played 21 and 22 minutes respectively and I don't think anyone has warranted losing minutes 2 games into the season.

I wouldn't call it "losing" minutes......as much as I would call it, "how in the hell do I get my best players on the court more" to help us win.

Has anyone noticed Macuras' offensive efficiency so far? It has to be off the charts. He's making great decisions and looks to me to be ready to contribute at a higher level. The question becomes, who's minutes does he get?

Right now, Remy's. Mainly because he has been as bad as JP has been good.

Anyone know what's up with Kaiser Gates playing 10 minutes vs. Miami, and 0 minutes last night?

I think Mack wanted to see what London could do.

I think Mack wanted to see what London could do.

Also a good bet that their practice time will dictate a lot of their on-court minutes. Wouldn't be surprised at all if Mack's response to this question would be that Gates didn't go as hard in practice this week as he needs to and/or that London really went hard and earned minutes.

Remy shoots a bit much for my taste. I haven't checked the stats, but that cockeyed shooting stance just bugs me. I wouldn't care if he shot lights out!

Michigan has shooters. The 1-3-1 works great against teams that don't shoot well. I predict more man-to-man Friday.

it's gonna be our mindf*** trick against michigan guys!!

There were fewer minutes available to a third-string guy in a tighter game, and this time they went to Makinde instead. I'm willing to bet will see some big swings in minutes between those two from game to game but the sum of both of their minutes won't vary as much.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if neither of them played against Michigan.

Thought we struggled in the first half and played better in the 2nd. I posted some thoughts on my blog, along with a few highlights since god knows we can not get any through ESPN. See below. Also, if posting blogs is not allowed or discouraged let me know and I will refrain from doing so in the future.

Heres a preview of some positive notes I posted through 2 games.

Sumner has shown ability to blow past defenders and this has allowed him to draw fouls at a rate of 10.4 per 40 minutes played, good for 23rd nationally. With the new rules I expect to see him continue to draw fouls and if he can hit FTs we should be able to pick up some easy points here.

Continuing the theme of free throws, this team should have a fantastic percentage (~80% so far.) This could benefit us greatly if referees continue to call fouls at a similar rate.

Macuras short bursts of offense have earned him the 35th best Offensive Rating in the nation.

Farr is top 50 in the nation in Offensive rebounding percentage (28th) and defensive rebounding percentage (46th.)

Must have been a lot of bitching about the 6:30 tip off time. I got an email survey asking about the time, parking, traffic, etc.

Part of it is the people whole run the ropes at the parking pass lot in the Kroger lot just decide to open it up at 655 and pass holders get screwed

That was my read on it when I got my survey invite, and read the introduction. I'm guessing the school didn't like the 6:30 tip time either, but as they said start times are dictated by the Big East, whom of course gets them from Fox Sports.

Xavier probably wants to be able to have documented evidence to present when they make their case that 6:30 is a bad idea.
