Nova was Nova. Beat Fairleigh Dickinson 91-54.
Seton Hall beat Dartmouth 84-67.
St. John's bounced back from the D2 debacle and won 66-57 over Wagner.
Belmont beat Marquette 83-80.
Marquette's loss is slightly disappointing. I know Belmont is usually a pretty good team, but I would have liked to see Marquette win that game.

Thanks for starting this thread, I was about to do the same.
Yeah Marquette needs that game at home.
Any win St. Johns gets at this point is a plus given how much of a mess they could be this year.

Badgers are highly overrated this year. My friend is a big Wisconsin fan, so I watched most of their games last year. Only two returning starters and some fringe contributors returning along with a decent but not great class. They will struggle to make the tourney this year imo. I think they will but they may be sweating come march.

Or, maybe GTown's coach just sucks...and he does. Why do you not just let Rivera go one on one at the end of the first OT? But no. You let Peak run the play. With GTown's talent, they have no business losing games like that to Radford. Embarrassing, at best.

I don't think too many people were expecting Radford to finish in the top half of the Big South. They tried to choke it away, but every time you thought they'd blown it they came back. Nice win for them. Not good for Georgetown, but Radford certainly earned that one.
Every opening weekend, the Big South pulls off some big wins. Then, they kind of tie off and go back to being 15th or 16th seedish.

The Citadel was in their first game transitioning from one of the slowest offenses in college last year to the fastest this year. VMI was the highest scoring offense in the country six times before their coach moved to Citadel this year.

And it's not like they were even hot…they hit 8 3's. They out rebounded them by 35…18 offensive. They just out lay-up'ed an undersized and under skilled team. I'll wait until 4 games in to make any predictions on Butler.

Hah hah! Wojo is saying and doing all the right things. He's got a young & energetic staff that is starting to make some headway in recruiting deparment. I don't know how he is with x's and o's but he was player who got the most out of his own talent. He cleaned house when he came in. Time will tell. I want them to have a good program, as I grew up a Marquette fan whose parents had season tickets for 20 plus years. I want them to be relevant as it also makes the Big East look better. BTW, I do root for Xavier when they play.

Creighton is trying to incorporate three new starters (two transfers and a freshman) and were facing a really good team on the road. I don't think they'll be a tournament team but they should be respectable.

Marquette does not look good so far this season.
This is the only game I've seen with them and I didn't see the first few minutes before the game opened up and desperation began to set in. Still, these are my two main takeaways:
1) Their offense looked frequently stagnant, and a lot of the times, it seemed like the plan was to just give the ball to Ellenson, but then he was unable to do something with it.
2) That transition defense in the first half was abysmal. Easy layups and wide-open corner threes. Just embarrassing.

It's too early to tell. RPI Forecast uses Jeff Sagarin's ratings, and I believe this is the first year he's actually posted them this early. Usually they don't go up until mid-December after sufficient data has accumulated. Meanwhile, Ken Pomeroy doesn't drop the preseason weight until early January usually, and it also carries disproportionate weight until around mid-December.

Uh, it's the best predictor/projection algorithm there is. Not perfect and there will be movement to the better I know, but these numbers aren't close to being acceptable. Half the teams OOC SOS's are well over 200. These numbers only get better if their opponents win a bunch more than expected. It's not affected by inconference games.

Uh, I study statistics, and I'm telling you it's too early for it to be a useful predictor/algorithm, and Jeff Sagarin would agree with me. Why? For the obvious reason, because the sample size is too small. The most games any team has played so far is 4, a lot of teams have only played 2, and some teams have only played 1. That's just not enough data to attach good quantitative rankings to any team's performance and consequently to any team's SOS. That doesn't even take into account that the second and third game of exempt tournaments won't even be listed yet.
Give it until mid-December, and then it will start to become a useful projection. If a number of the Big East's OOC SOS ranks are projected to be 200+ at that point, then there is highly justified reason for complaint.
If you need any more evidence of how weird the early projections are, just consider Xavier's non-conference schedule. They have the usual buy games that they have every year, then they have:
Road - Michigan (top 50 team, minimum)
Neutral - Alabama (top 125, likely)
Home - Cincinnati (top 50 team, minimum, possibly top 25)
Home - Auburn (around 150; this is the bad mark on the schedule)
Road - Wake Forest (top 100, likely)
That's not a world-beater schedule, but that's a good schedule, better than some previous years that were easily top 100 schedules. For example, to have two teams of Michigan and Cincinnati's caliber is a rarity for Xavier, and they got one of them on the road too. A road game against a team of Wake's caliber is also good, because it's a road game (it would be mediocre at home). Yet, Xavier is currently forecasted to have the 171st OOC SOS. That just doesn't make sense.

Sagarin always posts his ratings from preseason on. They're not very useful until all teams are connected, but that will only take another week or so. They're getting pretty close by now.

Ah, then I just never found them until December! I use Kenpom more often anyway, in good part simply because it's more user-friendly.
It's not really close now, but it soon will be useful. As a lot of teams play a game or two between today and next Wednesday, the dataset should increase significantly, and then it will get a huge boost from the Thanksgiving weekend exempt tournaments (and weekend games from teams not in Thanksgiving tournaments). By Monday, November 30, the sample size should be much larger. Xavier, for example, will have played 7 games by that Monday instead of just the 3 they have now, and there won't be any more teams with just 1 or 2 games screwing things up. After that, the wide variance from small sample sizes will be pared down, and we will see just smaller trends to the true mean over the next couple weeks. By mid- or late-December, most of the variation should be explainable by teams getting better or worse relative to their peers rather than just randomness, and the model will be a solid fit.

Is there a specific point where Sagarin drops that weight? I know Kenpom plays it by ear, but it's generally around the beginning of the conference schedule and near the end, it doesn't have a significant impact anyway because of the number of games that have been played anyway.

I heard Wojo pulled a clittle coaching motivation trick before the LSU game. Made them do their walk thru outside on a court in Brooklyn and then when they arrived at their game for warmup's he took theri regular clothes from them and had them warm up in plain black short and white shirts (colors might be off) and told team they disn't deserve to wear anything w/ Marquette on it.

I actually think he can get them relevant again. I mean I thought they'd be 0-5 right now. To be 3-2 and two losses to tournament teams ain't awful.
He seems to be recruiting well and getting some nice production out of his players.

I just had this conversation today with a fellow Muskie fan. It's still a crazy feeling to both like the other Big East teams AND root for them to win in the Non-Conference. I was PUMPED to see Marquette beat LSU and ASU the last two days! I am very excited that St. Johns is looking respectable. Love it that Butler has some good wins, and battled back to make it a game with Miami. SO awesome to be in a league where everyone is striving for excellence (even Depaul in a way - ha!).

Honestly I get that conference rpi kinda matters in terms of getting fringe teams from the conference in and maybe bumping teams up a seed line or so. However in the grand scheme of things who really cares? The big east was #1 in rpi last year right? And overall the year was a complete bust, because like it or not, the only thing that matters in college basketball is march and this conference failed miserably in it last year. I don't really care if the 6th team from the big east gets in this year..one cause that won't be xavier...they will be a top 3 at the least, and 2 if that sixth team loses right away it doesn't matter that they got in.
I get that it's a talking point but in order for this conference to improve its recognition nova, georgetown etc have to do better in the tourney period.

They might have. I'm just not going to sweat if we end up being in the 5-7 range in conference rpi. I just don't think it matters enough to worry about....nova and georgetown are the teams that need to have some success in march in order for this league to thrive. Xavier can't do it all by itself like it basically was doing in the a10

I believe it all matters.
Conference RPI lends itself to the perception of the strength of the conference. The Big East must perform very well in that regard. That involves a major perception issue that plays out during the entire season. Look at it this way: the major conferences perform well during the season and they also manage to achieve successful runs in the NCAA tournament with their main programs.
I agree with you that it is important for Georgetown and Villanova to perform well for brand purposes. I believe we will continue to build our brand and be there with them, especially after we make a final four, etc.
It all matters. Conference strength to maximize the number of teams getting into the conference, as well as their seeding. And on that point, remember that each team that makes it picks up 1 NCAA unit at a minimum. Otherwise, performance once we get into the tournament must be better.
I certainly agree with that. It's just that I want all of it: a strong conference at RPI for respect and a larger number of bids, and the tournament runs from there.

Yeah I have to support that conference RPI really matters a great deal.
- Perception is key in getting better match ups in the future, better players in the future, better lineup of sponsorship. Who wouldn't want to say they are playing for/against a team from the top RPI ranked conference?
- Perception is key when the tournament committee is weighing out seeding. "These two schools have similar records but who played in the tougher conference?"
- And the more Big East schools that get in the tournament, the more money that comes to the conference to share the riches.
That said, I'm not going to freakout if the RPI drops or doesn't stay as high as last season. Xavier controls their own destiny ultimately. You try to win every game and hope it all turns out for the best.

Well, my Loyola Grad Daughter and her hubby are very happy. I sure fed enough money to Sheridan Avenue, but I am pleased for Loyola. Porter Moser is really trying hard to resurrect that program and they've moved up to the Missouri Valley Conference now and have a commitment.
Other than that, though, a really good day for the league. Providence toughed one out and glad to see GTown take down Boheeeem.

Yeah, I didn't see the game. Spent the day in Atlanta with my 93 year old Mom & sisters. Boheem's program then.
Got back in time to see the end of the Providence game and, of course, the XU game. Great day for the league.
BTW, X. Back at RPI #1 again.

Two Huge games for Nova and Xavier this week...would love to have an undefeated matchup of top ten teams on Dec. 31st.
I haven't had a chance to sit down and watch an entire Nova game yet. Marquee game tonight vs OK, a nice scalp in the belt if they can win. Line has move to Nova -4.

Second time watching nova this year and it looks like the same team that flamed out in the tourney the last two years. When they are hitting outside shots, they are tough to beat, but when they arent, they seem to have more trouble than other teams. I don't know if it's just that they aren't very physical inside or what.

When they miss 15 of 17 three pointers, I like our odds. I didn't realize they were the lower ranked team tonight.

Twice now we've seen Oklahoma get their first shot blocked, leading to the shot clock almost running out, only for them to nail a quick three. Those are backbreakers.

This is why nova has flamed out in the tournament the past few years and why I don't like their system...they basically live and die by the three which in my opinion is a mid major kind of system.

True. So is every team in the tourney though. Nova is good....they can get really hot, but they can also go really cold like tonight. I just feel like they are completely lost if the outside shots isn't falling. They refuse to pound it inside when that happens.

True, but some are better than others. I think this might be the year Kansas doesn't finish first in the Big Twelve. Oklahoma is Final Four caliber good.
That's not to say that Nova has played their best game. It's just pointing out that Oklahoma is really freakin' good.
I don't love living by the 3, but it's not a loss to Northern Iowa.

True...and they will be in the top three in our league and have a great regular season. I'm just not going to fall for them again like I did last year picking them to go the elite eight or final four.

Nova still trying to be a 3 point shooting team this year when they aren't that team anymore. Came into the game shooting 30.9% from 3. After tonight that is down to 28.5%.

Have to say Fox did an excellent job with this salute to the Pearl Harbor area and the veterans the last few days. Loved the game breaks with the battle participants right there. Great job guys!!

With a win on Saturday, we will objectively be the top team in the Big East. For at least a week. You can be miserable , but I plan to enjoy it.

To add on to what everybody else is saying...
Villanova ranks 3rd nationally in 3PA/FGA. They rank 307th in 3P%. Usually not a winning combination.

In the consensus rankings from Sunday, X comes in at 8th. Pomeroy has us as 11th.
What is interesting is that Nova comes in at #1. Pomeroy was an outlier with Oklahoma as #1.
He must have known what was coming.

They have a -0.1 rebounding differential per game on the year. Not good at all considering the level of competition hasn't been the highest.

This is true. I also thought that Jay Wright did a horrible job of coaching last night. Oklahoma had no "rim protector" and yet Villanova wouldn't stop jacking 3's up there. The few times they did throw the ball inside, they scored, but waaaaaaaaay to much long range launching.
Oklahoma is good, but Villanova is very beatable when they aren't throwing rockets in there.

They did a lot of drive-and-kick to set up threes. More of those drives should have just been taken to the rim. They would have drawn fouls and just scored more. This team has been awful drawing fouls, and it's weird because all the returning players had respectable free throw rates last season.

Not Big East, but Dayton coming out with a huge dub over Vandy tonight. Encouraging especially after the way Michigan has been getting absolutely dismantled recently.
