Muskies take on Northwood this Saturday at the 'tas. Sadly, I will be unable to attend. Does anybody know if this game will be broadcasted either on television or streamed somewhere online? Any info will be helpful.

I doubt there is any. There hasn't been the last few years.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me not to have one. I've watched 5 or 6 teams play exhibition games in the past week all on their team's website.

The no stream sucks on toast for out of town people like me.

I assumed we were playing Northwood in Florida, which is a pretty good NAIA team coached by Rollie Massamino. As it turns out, Rollie is no longer coaching there, and we're playing a different Northwood team anyway. They're NCAA div2. That's all I know about them.

As others have said I'm pretty sure the game won't be streamed. They typically aren't. The schools that do stream exhibition games generally independently produce a lot of their own content anyway, so all they need to do is send the people from the athletic department that normally do the streaming out there for the exhibition games. I think Fox produces the majority of our games, and they just don't want to send a crew out to put a game on TV that almost no one would watch. If the game were to be streamed, I wonder who would own the rights to it. Saint John's had their game on ESPN 3, which is definitely not a Fox Affiliate.

In a day and age where high schools are doing high quality streams of their events it would be very easy for Xavier to do this.

I know the volleyball games get streamed by xavier so they have the equipment.

Does Xavier have the rights, though?? I'm asking because I don't know. I know that conferences who don't independently produce or stream any of their games typically don't stream their exhibition games unless they are produced by the network. I don't know why. I just know what. If the game is broadcast or streamed, it is typically produced by the network. That's not universally true as both Duke and UC streamed their games independently, but it is GENERALLY true. SEC Network is producing and streaming the SEC games. Big Ten Network is producing and streaming Big Ten games. Those are all networks. The Atlantic Ten is streaming those games, but they often stream independently produced games. Same with the NEC, CUSA, and OVC. Those games are streamed on those conference websites, but they're also being independently produced.

The only Big East games that are being streamed are the two Saint John's games, and they're not being streamed by Fox. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing Fox has the rights to them, but doesn't want to produce them because they just feel it isn't worth it. That being said, I have no idea why Saint John's games were streamed, or why they ended up on ESPN3.

Villanova is streaming their game on the 8th through their own website.

Between that and espn showing the Johnnie's I think it's safe to assume that fox doesn't hold the rights.

I know, right? The offseason ends tomorrow. I would like to say that after this year, I would really appreciate being able to bask in the feeling of a National Championship during the offseason. It will make all the climate change, coaching change, and national leadership change talk during the offseason SO MUCH EASIER to deal with. So, not much to ask I think.

Xavier Athletics Periscoped during the game a number of times, including: Intros, stretches of both halves, halftime & post game interview with Joe Sunderman (really good stuff), post game presser, and Coach Macks presser. Pretty decent stuff all in all.

Now to the game:
- How much are we to read into the starting lineup? Of note: X went smallish with Edmond starting over Larry, and Myles/Remy staring instead of Farr.
- Jalen and James had a pretty quiet game against a small team.
- Trevon, JP, Sumner, Myles, Larry, and Remy are looking good
- Little PT for Sean & London

I know, I know it was just an exhibition. Can't wait till next week!

I wouldn't read too much in to the starting lineup. Like in most exhibition games, Mack played a ton of different lineup combos. Although most of them included just one of either Reynolds, Farr, or O'Mara.

bleedXblue
11-07-2015, 06:42 PM
Some things really stood out to me today. In no particular order.

1. Gates playing ahead of London.....Makinde is the 10th or 11th guy off the bench. Not what I was expecting for a guy who practiced all last year.
2. Sumner looks a lot like Semaj, just a little more raw at this point and not quite as good a handle on the ball yet.
3. I'm not quite sure O'Mara is going to be any more than pedestrian at X. I sure hope he changes my mind.
4. Austin looks like he's much quicker and much more composed than last year. The PG spot is going to be a strength this year.

I'm pretty confident Sean will be fine, and today was just a starting point. I liked what I saw from him last season. If our 2 PG's combined for 29 points and 2 assists, today was just the beginning. It will be different down the road.

It's an exhibition game. It's fun, but it's much more for the benefit of the players than for any analysis on our side. These guys are getting their sea legs, and Mack is testing things out.

XMuskieFTW

They only thing I would take away from the lineup is that London is the last (scholarship) guy off the bench at this point. Mack gave Gates a lot more minutes, and he performed much better than London today......but its just an exhibition, so who knows.

Neither Northwood, Xavier, or the officials were in mid-season form today. The one takeaway I have from this game is that the Muskies will out-depth many of their opponents this year. JP, Remy, Trevon, Edmond, and Larry all showed signs of brilliance. Jalen was so-so. I agree with Shannon that Farr was the most effective front court presence through most of his game minutes. Kaiser Gates did not disappoint.

We must improve our free throw shooting and I believe we will shoot far better from the line as the season progresses just as we did last season.

Northwoods' little guard (#12, whose name escapes me), is an explosive player who dismantled our defense much like he did last year. Ho could play a lot of minutes for just about any D-1 program in the U.S.

With Chris and his staff pushing these talented players, the Muskies will be a very competitive squad by the time we get to the Conference schedule.

It was an oddly paced game that's for sure. I was little concerned with really no points from the post players, and relatively no foul trouble from Reynolds. But I have to keep reminding myself that it was an exhibition.

I think the referees have orders to "clean up the game" this year. They were certainly whistle happy and I know the NCAA has talked about making the game less rough. Furthermore, the moving screen (YAY!!!) is clearly a point of emphasis. I think they called 7 or 8 moving screens and ALL 3 of Makinde's fouls were of the moving screen variety. I've long argued that if you make the calls....and stick with it...eventually the players will wise up and start playing the game differently. Moreover, the fact that an offensive big man can just about truck a guy 10 inches shorter with impunity has LONG been a major complaint of mine. HOWEVER, I've seen this before where they say they will clean it up and exhibitions and the first two games of the year are abominably long with 60-70 whistles....and then the refs just go back to the old way of calling it. Here's hoping a shift in the style of play will happen....but history tells me, the calls will return to normal in a few games.

Sumner is going to be a stud, very smooth and fluid.

The paper said they returned four starters from last year. Are their better players all bench players?

Sorry should have noted; they lost there leading scorer (averaged 15ppg)

Still, XU was a bit sloppy and committed way more TO's than you should against a bad D2 team.

I almost wonder why they don't try to schedule Exhibition games against the better D2 teams. UC for example schedules Bellermine and they led the world 3 out of the last 5 years in Fg% and have D1 size.

I don't seem much advantage playing bad D2 teams when you could at least play the ones with more size or skill

Northwood and Bellermine play each other next Saturday, so that should somewhat settle that question.

Some takeaways and some info:

Refs were ridiculous. It was downright unwatchable at times. Hopefully, this season is not called the same way but I think the refs were making a point and then things will return to some normalcy.

Sumner is quick and lenghty. He can get to basket at will.

Reynolds has dominated in practice (confirmed by my son) and he was double teamed all night. I am not worried about him as I think he plays to level of competition.

Mack plays guys based on practice so if Gates gets in before Makinde then this should tell you something. I hear there is some pouting in practice at times.

Freethrow shooting was not great but one game sample.

XU will have a many choices in lineups. A good problem to have. They are still figuring it out.

Bring on the Red Hawks!

So based on the exhibition should I take Xavier at 220-1 to win it all?

Gates was a pleasant surprise, and London seemed lost out there. I believe that London has a huge upside, but he better get it in gear if he expects to get real minutes.

X does sometimes schedule better D2 teams, including Bellarmine not too long ago. It varies year to year, just like it varies for UC. Also, this squad at least had a small, speedy lead guard who could have played D1. That's a good type of player to get experience against.

The small fast guard (Maurice Jones) started at USC for two years until he was declared academically ineligible. He then transferred to Iowa State, but he was ineligible there as well. He averaged 13 ppg his sophomore year at USC.

I think there was another player on the roster who transferred from Auburn.

I don't there's much point at all in putting much thought into an exhibition game, Who is going to take a smaller pay check when only half the building is full? No point in spending $50,000+ on an exhibition game.

We could go the old Mick route and schedule arkansas pine bluff (327) or southeastern louisiana (315). 40+ spots worse than ANYONE on X's schedule.

I m old enough to remember when X lost to some Canadian travelling team (Marathon Oil?) in 1981 by about 15 points in an exhibition game. XU 50 got so mad he walked out.

Athletes in Action was legit, though. They typically won a few of those exhibition games every year. I was in Freedom Hall to see them beat Louisville one year.

Back then, (mid70's) X was on a par with schools like Northern Kentucky, Hanover, St. Joesph (Ind.), and the like. Even though they played Notre Dame, Marquettte, etc., they were not expected to win games against them. This year they played a scrimmage against a Big 10 school and played a game against a small school with some D-1 talent. They won both, as was expected.

During my time as a student manager, we played a team from Windsor Canada. I walked into their locker room at half time with towels, ice, and water...typical stuff. Head coach was talking, so I quietly did what I had to do, and not bother the team.

The assistant coach stops me when I was walking out the door, and asked me if I wanted a "soda". He then opens his cooler, and proceeds to offer me an ice cold Molson. I looked up and realized most all of the Windsor players had an open beer in their hands. They were pounding beers, listening to the coach, and were already down by 20 points!

Speaking of drinking at a game, I also recall Mo Brantley playing for one of those travelling club teams against Xavier (many moons ago).
