I didn't get to listen, any interesting comments from the coach?

A few things I remember:

- Compared Sumner to Christon in terms of his ability to create a shot and get to the basket.

- Makinde is very versatile, but needs to get stronger to play inside and needs to make better decisions.

- Kaiser is an outstanding shooter, 2nd best on the team (somebody correct me if I remembered that wrong).

- Talked about how Myles has been in the program as long as anyone else and needs to be a leader and take a big step up this season.

- Joe asked about the 30-second shot clock. Mack said it's not a huge difference, but that teams probably will apply more token full-court pressure to drain a few seconds off the clock. Said the biggest problem is getting college players to relax and not rush when the shot clock is down to 8, 9 seconds. In practice, he's trying to get the team comfortable with small shot clocks and waiting for a good shot. Doesn't mind if they get a shot off a second late in practice because he really wants them to be patient.

Chris was only on for 30 minutes because Christopher and Neal split the first 30 minutes. Christopher talked some about the improvements and re-seating process, but just the basics. I guess the one thing I learned (maybe this is old news) was that Xavier will play the first 4 years of the Gavitt Games (away-home-away-home), then take a year off. Also that the conferences will decide on the following year's schedule each spring with the top 1/3 playing each other, middle 1/3 and bottom 1/3 likewise. Take it with a grain of salt, though, otherwise why the hell are Villanova and Nebraska playing this year?

I had not heard that Xavier was definitely going to be in the first 4 years of the Gavitt Games, but maybe it came down to scheduling issues for the Big 10 this year in terms of Villanova and Nebraska being paired together. The TV networks have a tricky time trying to balance the matchups so that neither the Big 10 nor the Big East have them completely skewed in their favor.

I'm not sure Xavier playing the first four years is official, but that is what Christopher said. At the same time, I think he said the Gavitt Games were a 10-year deal with Xavier playing 8 years, which isn't right. But if we get to participate 7 of 8 years, I'm not complaining.

The best part of the night was when Christopher started talking about the makeup of the Big East. After pointing out that nine of the schools were Catholic, he said that Butler also had its own "value system" or something to that effect. I chuckled a little to myself, but the guy next to me laughed so hard the whole room must have heard him.

Over a 10-year period, all Big East teams would get "bye years" on 2 occasions, so it's not like Xavier is being singled out in that regard. For the Big 10, it's trickier to rotate 14 teams into 8 spots (or however many teams they have in the future).

tuned in late....

-didn't want Baylor, Colorado and Utah so close together but was negotiating with Utah, Baylor and Colorado for a date, Baylor and Colo. committed, and then Utah called back and said they wanted in, so took all 3.
- said Myles will be back (no timetable) and he is doing ok. Was big part of success last year. Absence will give Q time to grow and learn. Works hard but "hasn't turned the corner yet" but it will come. Already has college frame.
- Tre down to 195 from 215/220. Great experience with Nike Skills this summer and Gary Payton. Endurance is off the charts at new weight and moves much better and can go longer.
_ looking to Bernard for defense ala taller Remy. Picked up system very fast and can do a lot for this team in different ways other that high scoring. Seemed very happy to pick him up
- Team Speed is very good.
_ Gates had no complications from surgery. Still on 4 week return. Off the crutches and on the stationery bike. Worked very hard on his body for 12 weeks this summer even tho Mack told him he could go home for 1st 6 weeks, he stayed anyway. Roles will be similar to last year.
_ Ed has also done a lot of physical work and it shows. Expecting big year. Surprised to learn he was working with Brad Redford on his shot this summer and learned quite a bit.
-Impressed with Gaston but I missed the bulk of that discussion, and I guess the rest of the bigs.

Hopefully they'll put up the podcast fast.

Thanks for the update Bobbie.

I like that Sumner was working with Redford. If he could hit 73 3's in a row, we'd be unbeatable!

Yeah this was the update that stood out to me as well. I dont think Sumner is a bad 3 Point shooter, but he shot 30% last year which is pretty bad. This was a big reason why his efficiency wasnt as great as it couldve been. I think improving there will make him a much more well rounded player and help the team out immensely.

Its the difference between Ed being a top 20 pick...which I think he is there right now.......and being a top 10 pick.

love seeing that about Tre....hopefully his weight decrease helps a bit with his quickness and athleticism as well. Also, excited about Bernard....if he can be as good or better than Remy, that is going to tremendously help this team.

I'm getting excited again about this season, after a pretty crappy offseason.

Also good to see that Myles is going to try and settle his situation and move on...........which is exactly what he should have done months ago when this all went down.

I'm shocked Gaston is getting the early nod over Sean. I've thought Sean to be fairly solid and reliable albeit quick to foul. I haven't had the chance to see Gaston, but that's encouraging to have a couple solid posts for as thin as we are.

if you havent had the chance to see Gaston, or know much about him, than how can you be shocked about him being ahead of O'Mara?

Not the response I was expecting but I'll play along:
I said I like Sean and think he's solid, therefore with Gaston ahead of him having not played at duke or Kentucky he must be solid as well, but acknowledged I haven't seen him.
I feel that's pretty encouraging.
Usually to the in between the line reader they would've said "oh man Gaston is solid on D, not foul prone, got good jumper or hook out to 10 or 15 feet. Should really be a nice complement to Sean, etc...
I guess for a guy like you, you've really got to spell things out to get some feedback.

O'Mara was with the starters against Georgia last week. Of course that could be due to Gaston's ankle. According to Broering, Gaston and O'Mara should split the five minutes unless one of them would be in foul trouble. Then Tyrique could fill some minutes. I don't think its a big deal who is starting, but rather who is finishing.
