Purdue freshman forward Caleb Swanigan has not yet been cleared to play by the NCAA.
King said Purdue coach Matt Painter confirmed that status, saying "We're still working through the process."
King cites an anonymous source in saying the NCAA is investigating Swanigan's relationship with Roosevelt Barnes. The former Purdue football, basketball and baseball player took in Swanigan prior to his freshman year of high school. Barnes, now Swanigan's adoptive father, is also a contract advisor with Relativity Sports.

If the relationship is that he is the adopted father, then there should be no problem.

I wouldn't think so. I believe they are closely scrutinizing his relationship with Barnes before the adoption.

Here is the Swanigan backstory for those interested. (Link (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2580780-homelessness-heartache-and-hoops-caleb-swanigans-rough-road-to-purdue))

Well, that's crazy, but I guess you're right. People aren't considered prospective student athletes until the ninth grade, and according to the story Barnes took Swanigan in when he was in the eighth grade and began the adoption process. But, it took several years to complete. If the years he was living with him prior to the adoption being finalized is what the NCAA has an issue with, then I guess I understand it, but also feel that it is totally absurd. If the story is accurate, Swanigan was not a prospect of any kind when Barnes took him in. That should be the end of it and he should be cleared.

The NCAA is absolutely freaking ridiculous, how the hell is an agent supposed to know that this kid will grow to 6'9 and become a great prospect? If he's not cleared I would be shocked. There's absolutely no reason this should even be an investigation in the first place.

I've been looking around Wichita for some talented 7th grade boys to adopt in order to help Xavier's program.
And with that post, I'm pretty sure I'm on a number of watch lists.

Isn't that pretty similar to the movie "The Blind Side" and that situation?

Basically, only this particular case is even more ridiculous than that. The issues are the same, though. The person/people who took the kids in are considered boosters for a certain school by the NCAA. Had Michael Oher gone anywhere other than Ole Miss, then there probably isn't an issue. But, since the family were Ole Miss alumni, the issue was that they were acting as boosters and not as parents since he was a prospective athlete before they adopted him. In the case of Michael Oher, I don't think the family actually did adopt him. They just took him in.
In the case of Swanigan, he WAS adopted, and the adoption proceeding began BEFORE he was in the ninth grade even if it wasn't official until after he was technically a prospective student athlete. So, this is even more ridiculous than the Blind Side.

You're probably OK unless you adopt the Louisville approach of recruiting.

Dorial Green-Beckham is another comparable case. He was also adopted and committed to his "hometown" school of Mizzou. There weren't really any bad allegations that I'm aware of.

Same with Jeremy Maclin (but I am not sure if the family that raised him during high school had any connection to Mizzou).

Swanigan should be cleared to play, while I think that he flipped to Purdue because of his adoptive father, there is nothing wrong with the situation. For his sake, hopefully this is cleared up soon.

Diallo is still in limbo for Kansas. His are grade problems with the OSNA school he went to.
