I'm trying to put together a father/daughter event for Little LM's girl scout troop. I'm thinking a Xavier Women's Basketball game would be fun, inexpensive, and eliminates the issues I'd have if I planned it for a men's game because some of the dads are (sadly) UC fans. I don't think any of them care enough about women's basketball to care what they're seeing, and it's empowering for the girls to see the ladies, etc. (And I did look into a UC women's game in an effort to be fair, but then my husband said he's not sitting on bleacher seats to watch women play basketball even if it does only cost $1.)

Since it's been two years since I've been to a ladies game, I'm wondering if they still do the ball toss and stuff during the games. I have someone questioning how much fun a women's game would be for the girls (they're in 1st grade). Our last game was with Little LM in tow, she was 5, and had a great time. That said, Little LM has been raised on college basketball and other sports, so she's maybe not the norm...

Thoughts? Feelings? Suggestions?

Have them take the girls to the Lauren Hill game.

Edit: I think they're giving away bobbleheads. Nice take home.

Edit #2: It'll probably be packed and rocking.

That was my plan! I thought it was a great idea for so many reasons. But, my co-leader thinks the girls will get bored after about 10 minutes. I said "It's a basketball game. If they get bored after 10 minutes at a basketball game, there is almost nothing we can plan that will hold their attention."

Honestly, the boredom thing was my first thought. It would be a great experience, and it's not like they have to sit and be quiet like it's a recital or something. You just have to know the crowd. At that age, something where they stay active would be my first thought.... bowling, laser tag, sky diving, etc.?OK, maybe not the last one. But then, my wife would be doing the planning, as she's much better at this than I could ever be. So I'll shut up now. Regardless, I miss those days - I hope they soak it in! And good for you that your daughter would be cool with it.

LM, have you ever considered a volleyball game instead. They are a blast, they throw out lots of balls, you can get great seats, and the players are some of the best athletes on campus. If there was any way to pull it off, I would recommend tonight's game against league leader Creighton. It's a "Junior Musketeer" and a "Girl Scout" promotion game with special giveaways for Girl Scouts and an autograph session after the game. If you decide against the sporting event, Scene 75 is a fantastic place for kids of any age to have a birthday party. Laser tag, bumper cars, mini bowling, arcade games, a full bar in the middle with TVs for the dads. It's a new place in Milford and unlike any entertainment complex I have ever seen.

Just a thought. I like the basketball game idea, but my son was a little older before we made it all the way through an entire game. Good luck LM!

I am so bummed I didn't know about this before today. I'm going to call the ticket office on Monday to see if they do a Girl Scout Game for women's basketball. Thank you for letting me know! If nothing else, we're going to do this next year.

I have never heard of this place and just checked out the website. It looks fantastic. Even if we don't do it for the troop, we're going out there as a family! Thanks for recommending it. Little LM is excited to check it out.

Yes, the women do the ball toss and many of the other activities they do for the men. I've been to far more women's games of late, but the only one I can think the men do that the women don't is the Skyline drop from the rafters. They also do a dance cam and a "Dress Like a Musketeer" contest among others. If there's nothing planned for halftime, I've seen them do musical chairs or knock-out contests that you may be able to let them do as a troop - that should keep some interest.

Women's Volleyball really is a cool way to get the kids involved, plus it really is a great sport to watch. It really doesn't get enough attention, in my opinion.
Good recommendation, X-Man.

And the cost of admission is cheaper than Viagra. Win win.

Gotta agree with MOR here. I've brought my volleyball-playing daughters to two games now, and they've been fun to watch. My older girl (9) has been into the matches, and my younger one (6) makes it through a set before she's ready to go. They've been pretty kid-friendly, too. Do the ball toss during games, autograph afterwards, let the kids run around on the court afterwards and play over the net.

One more thing...major kudos to a couple of Xavier students this last match. Neither of my girls got a ball at the ball toss, and two students gave up their ball toss volleyballs to my young daughters. That type of thing makes the night for a little kid and the fact that we had two young gentlemen make a point to give their ball to a little one at the game was tremendous. If either one of you read this board, public reps. Well done. And thank you.

This should be a general rule at all Xavier Sporting Events. Give the ball to the kids. It's just the right thing to do.
