Great news. Wish him nothing but success.

I really believe if he stays healthy that 32 would be hanging from the rafters. He was phenomenal.

I agree. Watching him get hurt is still the saddest moment I've experienced as a Muskie. And we've had our share of miserable moments...

I third this. Just was not the explosive player he had been after the knee injury. Head coach at his age is quite a feat. Great to hear.

That would have been a different team if Darnell had been healthy. Lenny Brown, Gary Lumpkin, James Posey and a healthy Darnell Williams would have been ridiculous.

It was 98-99 season right?

I remember being so excited about that year and when he went down, do did all of the expectations.

I think the year before he average like 18 PPG.

Hell of a player.

Agreed. At the time, I would argue DWil was the best player of the 4. That team never really seemed to get in synch, and their season ended far too soon.

You are correct, Bleed. What would have been an almost certain NCAA Tournament team wound up having its bubble burst on Selection Sunday that season.

What people also fail to remember was that Williams was a valuable senior on the 1999-2000 team that was otherwise very young. Mo McAfee was the only other upperclassman on that 2000 team that I can remember off the tip of my head.

Agreed as well. I don't think I enjoyed a group more than Brown, Posey and Williams (though the second Final 8 team is pretty close). And Williams was my favorite, floating through the lane or nailing threes in a jersey that looked two sizes too big. It was heartbreaking when news broke that he blew his knee out.

He was still unstoppable that year... on EA Sports March Madness for Playstation.

Which may have also been the best basketball video game ever. Although another good one (although I can't remember the name) was the NBA one one one game for the Gameboy.

I learned today Coach Williams is a grandpa. His son is 25 and works in Florence.

Who knew!?
