HoopsHD's Jon Teitel interviews Remy Abell (http://hoopshd.com/2015/09/24/season-preview-xavier-sr-sg-remy-abell/)

Did not realize that Abell was Bo Jackson's cousin.

I don't think I would refer to the non-conference schedule as "loaded" or "a gauntlet", like the person writing this article is.

It's the foolish "eye test" because it's a lot of major conference names. Whenever I see actual sportswriters buy into that, I find it embarrassing.

I remember as a young fan when I bought into that because Xavier was just beginning to forge a new identity. It mattered if X played Providence or Pitt or Marquette because those were name teams - even if they weren't that good. It still matters to those who don't get into how good the teams really are.

Oh I totally get that. Heck, in the late 00s, Xavier was still proving itself as not a mid-major, so I enjoyed beating up on middling major conference teams. But if you are a sportswriter, you should be aware to a moderate degree how challenging a schedule will actually be. It's like the guy really just follows football, but he had to write a basketball article.

At least he didn't say that Xavier would potentially be playing USC in the Advocare semifinals in Orlando.

I think that sounds likely.

Now that I think about it...yes, yes, it does.

Wake Forest and Michigan haven't exactly been lighting it up in football recently either.

I wouldn't call the schedule a gauntlet by any means, but Wake and Bama will likely be better this year than they've been in recent years. Bama apparently finally has a guard that can shoot, which is something they haven't had since....what year is it?? Wake Forest also returns five of their six top players from last year. I don't think Xavier will have to go above and beyond to beat them, but I do think it's two teams that are improving.

I could see Auburn actually being close to an NCAA Tournament caliber team this year.

And Mizzou.....well, they have a coach who did very well at the div2 level, and if Mizzou was a div2 team, I think they'd do pretty well at that level this year as well.
