SMU went before the Committee on Infractions last month for a hearing regarding various allegations involving the men's basketball team, including a failure to monitor charge for head coach Larry Brown, a source confirmed to ESPN.com on Thursday.
Is anyone really shocked by this? I have never trusted that guy. SMU, you wanted him and now you got him. Good luck w/ that.
Thread should read Larry Brown;my bad.

Larry Brown should have stuck with the NBA.
He should have stuck with retirement. For God's sake, the guy has to be like nearing 80. He has won an NCAA Championship, an NBA Championship, etc. Why does he feel the need to still coach?

Larry Brown has never stuck with anything.

Yes. You only have to worry about basketball, and not all of these extra rules.

It's now official:
ESPN.com: SMU Penalties (http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/13769364/ncaa-bans-smu-mustangs-2016-postseason-suspends-larry-brown-10-percent-team-games)
- 2016 Postseason Ban
- Loss of 3 scholarships for 3 seasons (9 schollies in total)
- 9-game suspension for Larry Brown (lack of head coach control)
Nothing further has been announced by the AAC; I can't imagine SMU will be allowed to participate in the conference tournament and potentially jeopardize their auto bid for 2016.

I disagree. He is not a slime ball like Calipari. Calipari is much better at getting away with it. The two are not the same.

If it's now that looks bad, if it's this weekend look for him to cancel. This looks bad.

Dana O'Neil with a scathing article.
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/13771620/smu-basketball-coach-larry-brown-gets-punished-yet-again
"He is a perfect 3-for-3, having worked as a head coach at just three NCAA Division I institutions (UCLA, Kansas and SMU), yet managing to lead all three into an unplanned March vacation.
You don't find that quality of work just anywhere."
"Frankly, that's the only real surprise in any of this, that the peripatetic Brown actually will have to face the mess he himself created. Usually he's skated out of town by now, leaving others to pick up the detritus he left behind."
"And he no more belongs in college athletics than Lance Armstrong would teaching an ethics class."

its a great time to bash on Larry Brown, but I don't think the UCLA or Kansas fans will be complaining about the success he had while coaching those programs; hell, SMU should be happy he made them somewhat relevant. The guy is a great coach, just probably not built for the college setting.

Kansas won't, but UCLA has run every coach not named John Wooden out of town because of their failures to win a national title. The exception was Jim Harrick; he won a title but was fired for falsifying expense reports instead.

I don't thinks a school like SMU with its previous history is enjoying being in the news for sanctions again just to be relevant. IF they are ok with this then I think it says a lot about its adminstration. What are odds Larry Brown sticks around after this mess?

Interesting point. Kansas and UCLA didn't need any help being relevant, though.
I think the closest thing this compares to is Fresno State and Tarkanian. He came, he was there for a few years, he built them up, they cracked the rankings, they made the tournament, they got busted, and then they were done and haven't been anywhere close to good since. Was it worth it?? Did they enjoy it?? It's as if they knew that was how it would play out, but did it anyway and just decided to enjoy it while it lasted.
I don't understand how SMU, being in Dallas, was incapable of putting together at least a halfway decent basketball program on occasion, even if it were just by accident. it wasn't that they weren't making tournaments. It wasn't that they weren't making NITs or CBIs. Its' that they were outside the top 200 far more often than they were in it. Then, suddenly, Larry Brown arrives, and they went from having less than 100 people in the building to selling out and having fans scalp tickets for hundreds of dollars. Hell, maybe it was worth it, but I think it's over now. Like Fresno State, people will just occasionally remember those two years that SMU was actually halfway decent, and then realize the only reason it happened was because they were cheating and dismiss it.

Dick Vitale just tweeted questioning why Brown is still allowed to coach this year.
Greg Christopher was on the panel that handled this matter.

SMU was just sanctioned by the NCAA for their men's golf team violations as well. The defending US Amateur and NCAA champ from last year wont be able to compete. Sounds like lack of institutional control to me by a university that is well known for it's improprieties.

Bleed, the ironic part about that comment was that SMU wasn't found guilty by the NCAA for lack of institutional control. If they were, the punishments would have been even more severe for both sports and the institution.
And in response to 87, it could be argued that Larry Brown having to face the music with his present team should be punishment in itself. If he just quit now and either permanently retired or found another NBA gig, that would be low rent.

I think there is about a fifty percent chance that SMU plays in the NCAA Tournament this year. They'll wait ninety days, then they'll appeal, they'll be reinstated pending the results of the appeal, and looking at how slowly the NCAA seems to operate these days it'll be next summer before they get around to making any sort of a ruling. By then, Larry Brown can just retire and let his predecessors clean up the mess. Of course, if they do this, the mess will be a lot bigger, but it won't be Larry Brown's mess anymore. Which is another reason I could see them going this route. We're talking about Larry Brown AND SMU.

I'm coming back to this thread when the NCAA slaps Roy Williams on the wrist and says...."bad boy."
