I like to root for the local teams, and I have always rooted for our little brother, the Dayton Flyers.

I have watched both their games this year and all four of their NCAA games last year.

This stat boggles the mind: The Dayton Flyers have won 5 of their last 6 tournament games.

Read that again. Amazing.

My hats off to the Flyers. They are fun to watch and fun to root for. I think not getting in the Big East is going to be the best thing that ever happened to them. The Atlantic 10 is a fine conference, and if they use it like we did they could again become a National program. You can get top recruits and even a #1 seed in the A-10. Archie Miller needs to consolidate these runs with some solid recruiting classes and make Dayton a force every year.

I confess I didn't watch much Dayton hoops this year, and I read even less. I don't know how recruiting is going. I also know that Archie Miller will be sought after. Much like Xavier when we were in the A-10, the big schools that come calling are going to be surprised how much Archie already gets paid. Dayton is a better job that people give credit, and Archie Miller is the undisputed KING OF DAYTON. Talk about a rock star, he has got to be off the charts up there.

Dayton got to play a home game in the NCAA Tournament. That isn't fair, especially to Boise, but that isn't Dayton's fault. They got the home field against Providence as an 11 seed. Again, not fair, but they are taking advantage of the hand that they were dealt, and they were dealt a pretty good hand.

They will have 10,000 strong in Columbus today when they play Oklahoma. They are 5 point underdogs. The game is at 6:10

I got Oklahoma in my pool for two more wins, and I could use the points. But I am rooting for the Flyers.

I also want to play the Flyers again. I know we will. Doesn't have to be next year. I would like it to be an ESPN deal, and I would prefer a Saturday Night at the Cintas. If ESPN wants the game, make room on a Saturday Night. I bet that would get us back in the series. Maybe if they played us 2 here we could give them 1 there.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAYTON FLYERS!!!!

I am hoping to hookup with Thor to watch tonights game.

Did anyone ever think that you could type the words "Dayton has now won 5 of their last 6 NCAA Tournament Games" and have that statement be factually correct?

You have to at least admit it is amazing.

We don't even play them anymore. Some of you need to let it go.

And if you think this trolling is bad just wait until they beat Oklahoma in front of a partisan crowd thanks maybe to some controversial homer refs.

Brace yourselves Flyer Haters, because tonight the Flyers will ride. I would not like to be playing that team in front of that crowd if I was Oklahoma. I think they would have much preferred the Providence Friars.

Thor, tell me what time we are meeting up!

And besides the great Pablo, peace be upon him, I have probably done as much to raise animosity of the Flyer Nation as any internet poster. And those Melon Humpers ate up every bit of it. Lots of Glove Smelling to be had.

But I grew up rooting for all the local teams and largely still do. This is the epicenter of college hoops, and you go to a sports bar around here this time of year and it is a zoo of Xavier, UC, UK, Louisville, OSU, Indiana, Purdue and even an odd Butler fan thrown in. This region is incredible. The history is incredible. It is one of the factors that helps us thrive.

I don't see it as competition that could harm us, I see it as a competitive enhancement. They are our oldest rival. We don't currently play them. We will again some day. That deal will get done. The fans want that ticket, it is a big game. EPSN wants that broadcast, they used to put that game on every year. If they are going to be a rival, they should be at a level that we deserve.

Plus, I miss yelling "JIMMY CARTER!!" at all of those sweater vested melon humpers. It doesn't get any better than that.

I hated Bob Huggins, but I loved to hate Bob Huggins. Once he was gone I missed the son of a bitch. It is hard to hate Mick Cronin. Maybe I pity him, and the fans that have to endure his long term contract. They have my sympathy. But hate him? Life is too short to waste the effort on him.

It drives Garvin crazy. He hates the fact after last year that you see more people wearing UD colors at Reds games. Talk about a bitter ender. He thinks this is an affront to all of Xavier Nation.

Not me though. I love beating Dayton, but I root for them when we don't play. Always have. I will today.

LETS GO FLYERS!

Thor, you picking me up?

This board has a diehard cadre of fans that hate all things Dayton. I get that. But the broader fanbase and our city want to play Dayton. I don't think it is the end all, and I don't mind if it doesn't get done until ESPN offers us Saturday Night. I think the rank and file ticket holder enjoyed the Dayton games immensely. In fact, as a season ticket holder it was one of my favorite games. Every year the sweater vests make the pilgrimage and every year I got drunk and yelled "Jimmy Carter!!" as maliciously as I could (and it turns out you really can be offensive to people just by yelling Jimmy Carter).

I love beating Dayton. I love reminding those Melon Humpers that we are everything they ever wanted to be as a program and an institution. Rivalries are good for sports, and if you didn't notice our attendance isn't what it once was. I remember when we sold out every single seat before the very first game for the first time ever. Sadly I just thought that would last forever. That was an epic moment and if Skip Prosser was anything he was one hell of a salesman. Adding games that increase ticketholder value is always a good idea.

And they would play us in a heartbeat. I want ESPN to make it happen. And I want Saturday Night Primetime on the ACE. Those are my preconditions. My demands must be satisfied!

+1 to you because BOTH are the correct answer.

I passed out for a little bit but got up and had the Beast for Breakfast!

Never ever tasted better. I am happy as a pig in shyt. I love the Sweet 16. All day long I am just going to smile and mumble to myself. Maybe I will take a nap. Then I will get up and smile and mumble to myself some more. I honestly couldn't sleep last night anyway, I am just living the dream. I can't wait to beat Zona. It is going to happen. It is going to be glorious.

Also, I am bi-polar, so I got that going for me too.

I love it when the stars are aligned!

I am one of those fans that wants to play and beat Dayton every year. Like Snipe said, now that we've moved on to bigger and better things, Dayton's managed to crawl out from under its rock and enjoy a little success. I would love nothing more than to give them a beating every year to remind them of their place.

I also can't wait to watch the melon humpers lose today. I hope they never win a game again.

I agree with most of it. People want this game to be played. People want to buy tickets and watch this game. This game will sell out (a real sell out, not a marketing sell out (there is a difference!))

What I disagree with is that you hope they never win. We played Dayton as a rival for 20 years and with a few hits here and there they sucked and never won a tournament game. Why would ESPN want to put a great program like ours against a suckjob program like the old UD on primetime on the ACE on Saturday Night? They wouldn't. I want the primetime of primetimes, and for that you have to have two rivals that are both respected. No use having a rival that isn't respected.

You don't hear many people crying about not playing Miami. That is because Miami sucks ass. And guess what, we are all poorer for that. If Miami rulled the MAC I would be all for the rivalry. Charlie Coles killed the program. I don't care if he is nice, he killed a great thing. I remember the days when people still read the newspaper and they had the Mythical Miami Valley Conference with all the standings and games where we all played each other. Those were great times but Miami used to be competitive.

If Miami had a great program instead of a suckass program, would that hurt us in any way? I remember Wally, that kid was a stud. Those were great games. I miss them having a program. We are poorer now, and you don't have to be a Miami fan to admit it.

MOR said this on another thread:

Somebody check my math on this, but I believe that every single player who stayed at Xavier to become a Senior and entered school in 2003 or later has played in at least one Sweet 16 during his time at Xavier.

That is pretty amazing- especially since David Freaking West never did.

Now really, when you read that it lays it all out. We win basketball games, it is what we do. Anybody here that has any fear of Dayton is a complete pussy.

We are Xavier, and we are dancing in the Sweet 16 again. I think this could be the year for the Final Four. And this was a rebuilding year, our core of talent is frosh and sophs. We are Cock Strong! Let Dayton win to enhance the rivalry. If they become another Miami we will never play them again, and then we might talk about the good old days when it was fun to thrash the Melon Humping idiots but it just isn't fun anymore to even consider it.

Duke - Carolina wouldn't work if Duke or Carolina only made the NIT.

In that sense, a win for Dayton is actually a win for Xavier and our region, which as I said before is the real epicenter of college basketball. We all benefit from this.

For the record, I wish we still played Miami every year. It pissed me off when we dropped them and it pissed me off when we dropped Dayton. I love the Miami Valley Conference. Did we ever sweep it back when we played all three teams? I don't remember it ever happening in my brief lifetime. I live for tradition. I don't care how good the other program is, I just want Xavier to crush them on the court.

That's what it comes down to me. If we had played Dayton in Columbus, there's no way in hell Dee would have lost that game as a senior. He would have gone off for 40 points and 20 assists if that's what it took to beat the sweater vests up north.

I like Archie, and I wish Xavier would've let Sean hire him like he wanted to. He would've been great for the program.

That being said, we are a program. Dayton (and their NCAA success) is not a program. They are a coach. They are Shaka Smart. Once they can sustain March success after coaches move on to bigger and better things, then we can revisit this.

VCU is more than Shaka Smart, even if he might be the most successful coach they've had. Their rise wasn't out of nowhere.

I don't know what job out there is better than Dayton. Tough loss for the Flyers. They just seemed to run out of gas. 6 games in 10 days and all that. They were not a deep team.

Remarkably I am already over this tough loss.
