Honestly, that being said, Villanova's issue was an over-reliance on threes, but that wasn't because of a weak frontcourt. It was because Hart was the only real slasher on the team, like Remy is for Xavier, but Xavier had a uniquely talented passer at center to provide versatility.

Only Big Boys left...and 2 from the Big 10.
And the Dave Gavitt Challenge is between the Big East and the Big 10. Should be a ratings boost for Fox, and hopefully good for the league.

If you hate Dayton (and I think most of us at least qualify as strongly disliking them), you'll enjoy the fact that their women's team has made the Elite Eight. Why? Because it means they have to play UConn. While you have to give them credit for advancing so far, it will still be fun to see a score that involves Dayton losing by 60.
Yeah, I was JUST a bit off on this one. Can't watch the second half, but I was on the treadmill for the first half, and it was honestly inspiring. I couldn't yell at the Dayton girls to not get tired while I was slowing down on the treadmill! Anyway, kudos to the Dayton women on an amazing first half however this turns out.

Interesting that they are playing with a 30 second shot clock in the CBI. Game is on CBS Sports Network.
YOUR Loyola Ramblers are up by 9 over LA Monroe with 10 to go.

Made it 30 sec in NIT as well.
I'm a fan of 28 sec. O30 would still be better than 35 though. Why 35? No one else in the world uses a 30 sec shot clock. Women's is 30 sec. Makes no sense. 35 sec is wayyyy too long.

Final score was Loyola 65 LA Monroe 58.
A thirty second shot clock did not Jack scoring. Better shots would.

@GoodmanESPN: Refs for Final 4, per source: Brian Kersey. Mike Eades, Doug Sermons, Verne Harris, John Higgins and Pat Adams.
Don't know about Higgins and Adams. Ehhhh. Would have preferred Ed Corbett, Roger Ayers or Gene Steratore
@GoodmanESPN: Refs for Monday's national title game, per source: Michael Stephens. Joe Derosa and Pat Driscoll. Alternate is Jeff Clark.
No problem with these. Driscoll is doing a LOT of Big East games these days.
By the way. I thought the Xavier Arizona game was really well officiated. The refs in that game?
Ron Groover, Keith Kimble, Roger Ayers.

Yeah, those guys doing those games was suspect. Rutecki and Carstensen are not good. I'm sure they were paired with quality guys, but one ref can screw the entire thing up and make other guys have to come up with "make up" calls. A lot of times fans just don't understand how some calls are not made, and why some other ones are.
I've had lots of beers with lots of refs. The protocol and etiquette dynamic on the court between the refs is interesting stuff. The refs themselves know who the good partners are and sometimes when the game pairings are posted, there is some eye rolling by the good guys. A good group work together like a well rehearsed music group. That's when you barely notice they're out there. I've had some very funny conversations on the sidelines during games too with refs who'll admit that they themselves are mystified by what the hell his partner called. Good or bad though, I think they all try to do the right thing, but no matter what everyone says, there are vendettas. John Clougherty had a running issue with BeelzeBob.
The problem in regular season is when you are forced to get parings like an Ed Corbett with a Rutecki. You get choppy games and players and coaches get frustrated. No way to get around it though because one league can't get a monopoly on the good ones.

Correct. They were actually at the initial meeting, but couldn't get their act together. To wit:
"In May 1978, DePaul University hosted a meeting with representatives from Bradley, Dayton, Detroit, Illinois State, Loyola-Chicago, Air Force, and Xavier in which all agreed in principle that a new athletic conference was needed. Further progress was made through a series of early 1979 meetings in San Francisco, Chicago, and St. Louis that included participation by Butler, Creighton, Marquette, and Oral Roberts. On June 16, 1979, the Midwestern City Conference (nicknamed the MCC or Midwestern City 6) was formed by charter members Butler, Evansville, Loyola, Oklahoma City, Oral Roberts, and Xavier, with Detroit joining the following year."

What happened to Evansville was a burned out Jim Crews that turned into a bad hire in Steve Merfeld who was 54-91 in 5 years after Crews went 39- 49 in his last 3 years.
Bad hires turn a program on it's head quickly, that is why the 35 year run of Xavier is so impressive through 6 different coaches. Don't want to risk changing over very often.

Chicago showed their love for the Ramblers to the tune of 1,761 fans per game this year, the lowest average attendance in 30 years for Loyola. That 1,761 average includes a crowd of 4,058 when Wichita State came to town.

U do realize that Loyola basketball has not been relevant for over 30 years, right?
They are literally rebuilding from scratch like Xavier had to in 1980.
Go back and check what Xavier's attendance in 1979 was - the year before Bob Staak.

In addition to GOMUSKIES' points of last year being the worst of the previous 30 in attendance and moving to a better Conference, didn't Loyola recently (2011) upgrade their Gentile Center to include real stadium seating and other amenities previously lacking? Furthermore, Loyola disbanded their football program a full 43 years before Xavier did (in 1930 vs 1973). The Muskies got their basketball program heading in the right direction a mere six years later (1979) with the hiring of Bob Staak. It's been 85 years since Loyola dropped football!

Yeah, and they have a National Championship in that 85 years, don't they...albeit a long time ago but more recently than SucKS...Something that X does not. Their men's Volleyball team won the NCAA D1 Championship in 2014 too. Not dissing X, of course, but when are we going to win something?
And we all know attendance for this year is predicated on what you did last year..or do something really spectacular like knock off Wichita State during the year. Loyola was under .500 last year, AGAIN, and were mostly unspectacular most of the year.
They have a much higher endowment and many more fat cat alumni than Xavier. They'll be fine.

Why was their attendance so bad?? It was their best team in at least nine years. If your team is improving, then shouldn't your attendance improve along with it?? That's normally how it works. I know they haven't been relevant in a while, but UC Davis hadn't been relevant at any point in their entire history (even by Big West standards), and they were packing them in all year. Same with North Florida.

They didn't really show much until the end. They still did only play in the CBI, which a lot of people don't even know exists. You have to cut through a lot of sports competition clutter on Chicago before you get to Loyola. They barely get any press in the Tribune or Sun Times.
