View Full Version : Byu = nova

I shudder at the thought, but most of what I have heard about BYU makes them sound like Nova. 3 point bombs away, 70 possessions a game. Maybe it's just the fact that almost everyone in the media is picking BYU, except our favorite leprechaun, Pete Gillen, who picked X. It seems to be the trendiest upset pick of the tournament.
I just hope we come out with fierce determination, and that Mack has that fire in his eyes look, and we send those Mormons back to Utah.
Just shut all these media types up.

You could also say that I resemble Nova when I play against my nephew on his mini-hoop. He can also barely walk.

BYU is an 11 seed playing in Dayton tonight and Nova is a 1 seed and ranked 2nd in the country.

I love that it's the popular upset pick (and honestly, from afar I can understand it) because it makes it all the less likely that BYU even escapes tonight.

Yeah Nova is a million times better than BYU. After Gonzaga (admittedly a very impressive win) their next 3 best wins were Stanford, UMASS, and St Marys. They got swept by Pepperdine and lost to San Diego. I am not sure they are going to beat Ole Miss.

Could BYU or Ole Miss beat XU? Absolutely. But if XU plays like we have of late we will be either team. I am not really rooting for one team or the other but I wouldnt mind a triple OT game. Neither of these teams play any D and we have a pretty damn good offense. And just a couple weeks ago we were thinking we would have to be a 11-9 seed and play an even better opponent. I like where XU is sitting right now.

I wish the game was on Friday -- for Stain, Dee, and JP's sakes (and hence ours). The extra day off would have been really nice. But at least we're not playing tonight as well.

Does that really say anything of value, the popular picks by "experts"? Every year they latch on to certain teams, yet somehow people forget that they are usually wrong.

Also, BYU doesn't chuck up threes at a high rate. They are 121st in 3PA/FGA, while Villanova is 22nd.

BYU is a classic case of a perception that fun to watch = good.

The fact that "BYU = Villanova" is even the title of this thread is an absolutely hilarious and extremely uneducated notion

Would I prefer to play Ole Miss? Sure, but I'm not exactly terrified of BYU either. Despite some worrisome match-ups there is no reason we shouldn't beat them.

It doesn't matter who we play. What matters is being ready to go at tipoff on Thursday. Whoever we play will have a game under their belt and the NCAA jitter gone. We can't afford a slow start to a team that is ready to roll.

ESPN has a love affair with BYU. During conference tourneys, some of their analysts said BYU should be in the NCAA "because of their fast style of play" and "they are really enjoyable to watch".

The downside of getting the last 6 seed is that we don't know who we play until tonight. Most of the field has been able to game-plan since Sunday evening.

Yeah but there are different assistants scouting each team so I don't think it's a huge deal for Thursday. It might be more of a downside for Saturday if we get that far slightly stretching our scouting depth on Mon/Tues.

BYU has 4 - 3 point threats...all under 6'6.

Villanova has 5+, and 3 of them are over 6'4. All of which can also take you off the dribble.

Other than that, yah, they both can score alot of points.

To be honest, the 1 player I'm worried about from BYU is Collinsworth, who doesn't shot 3's, because he's slashing wing who scores and rebounds, which could be a problem for Trevon or Remy.

Seems like BYU's M.O. is to get as many possessions as possible even at the sake of you scoring, which to me is just fine. I know we have the reputation of spotty defense and giving up 3 pointers, but I feel pretty good about defending BYU after cutting our teeth in the Big East.

Screw the "experts", If we can't beat BYU/Mississippi as a 6 seed with the talent we have, then forget it...time to go back home and rethink a few things.

Guys, when have we not been picked in an upset?

I'm not kidding. Portland State? Minnesota? Remember when we couldn't beat Minnesota because they lost to Penn State? I mean these guys who pick these games are developmentally disabled. I'll just say for reals...they are retarded.

Just win. BYU won one very good game. Good for them. They are exciting to watch. Thanks because college basketball is pretty terrible. Terrible like Ole Miss.

We might not be great, and struggle defending the 3, but if we can't beat a either of these teams who have to travel from the Confederacy and New Jordan River to Dayton then down to North Florida and hit shots in both of these places, then we certainly suck more than I thought.

Yeah, I noticed that at halftime the last time we played against 'Nova. We were sitting at 21 points after 20 minutes. Something is very wrong of we have 21 points at halftime of the next game, regardless of who we play.

Oh, come on. They're playing for the same thing we are -- one step closer to a national championship. Whether BYU/Ole Miss is an 11-seed or a 6, I'm sure they're approaching this with the mindset that they belong just as much as anyone else.

I caught a little piece on BYU and I think I heard they average 18 seconds per possession. That must be fun to watch. I'm not sure if I want to play their game though, even if we tend to be a deep team. BTW - I see NIT games on TV, what's the deal with tonights game?

That wasn't my point. Although maybe I didn't make my point all that well.

By definition they were among the last 4 in. So while having to win an extra game and only having 40 hours' notice may be a disadvantage, it's better than they very real possibility of not playing us at all.

We, on the other hand, earned our seed and have a prep disadvantage nevertheless.

Also, I wasn't saying this is the biggest deal in the world. But it is an annoyance from a coaching/prep perspective, I would imagine.
