Deserves a lot of credit!!!!

Xavier, in our 2nd year in the BE, is playing for a conference championship.

Xavier's SOS is 12th in the NATION, with 6 wins over Top 25 teams.

He has played 3-4 freshman meaningful minutes all year, and his arguably two most talented recruits are redshirting.

This team HAS improved on defense. It might not have happened as soon as we all would have liked, but they are coming around at the right time.

This season has been a success. We are looking at a single digit seed in the NCAA Tournament.

IN MACK WE TRUST!

Some could consider me to somewhat hard on Mack in live chat but I must admit he and the team have exceeded my expectations when I look at the season thus far as a whole.

He won't take heat for his use of timeouts in this game because Jalen's on the hot seat for almost ruining everything all by himself.

The team, and in particular the defense, has definitely gotten better throughout the year. It's still not consistently good, but it's better. I certainly think we're playing our best ball of the year at the right time. Kudos Mack.

I did think we stuck with the 1-3-1 about three minutes too long tonight (I was probably sounding like a broken record in the chat), but all's well that ends well.

Quote from a Georgetown forum:

"Coaching - X's coach is very good. I think I can say that without detracting from jtiii. He has had our number this year. Seems like jtiii finally found something that worked towards the end, but that coach is very very good."

He goes on to talk about timeout usage. No fan base seems to like their coaches TO usage.

Chris Mack deserves major props. Great last 2 nights even though my blood pressure is off the charts still.

Bottom line, to quote Mack in his post-game to his team, "We didn't come here to beat Butler, we didn't come here to beat Georgetown. We came here to win the Big East championship." I hope we've seen the last of Jalen Reynolds failure to turn his back and walk away. But in his defense, he got beat up all night and finally snapped. This ties in with jay Bilas' opinions on nation-wide officiating. It's very bad. More to come on this later.

Mack has done a really nice job with this team. Chris is a great representative of Xavier and has a nice presence on Twitter. I hope he becomes the winningest coach in Xavier history.

Mack coached the end of that game perfectly. Correct fouling inside 6 seconds.

Why did Trautwig make the second free throw. Gift.

This is probably the best example of where the coach can make an impact in the game. The fouling was executed perfectly. Also, thought coach did a good job subbing offense/defense at the end.

Re: Trautwig, I believe he was trying to miss the last FT.

I was actually pissed when he used our last timeout. I was complaining at the time.

Georgetown didn't have a timeout, and I didn't want to give the option of having the coach plan the play. It was then explained to me that Coach was probably going over the foul strategy. But really, the foul strategy is within the last five seconds, and all GTown did on the next possession is dribble right down the court and lay the ball up in about 5 seconds.

Still not sure we needed to call the timeout and then let them have a layup, but I will give Mack the benefit of the doubt. I question time outs all the time. I think all fans have different preferences for sure.

I think Mack is sitting pretty. I love the quote about coming to win the whole damn thing. That is what I want my coach to say and he hit it strong.

I love where we are right now. This team (in my humble opinion) has exceeded expectations. I really want to beat Nova and take our first title, because it may be the first but it sure as hell won't be the last. Beat Nova, and then tell them to get used to it. We got a new Sheriff in town.

I think part of the foul strategy was to tell them to guard the 3 and give up anything inside that without fouling. It's one thing to give up an easy layup that keeps you ahead by a point, it's another to foul the guy on the play and give the other team a chance to tie. Then when it gets inside 10 seconds you switch to fouling before they can get any kind of shot off.

I'm not a Mack basher at all but I don't get why we can't just have a positive thread about the game and his efforts last night without sniping at some of our other fans. And a lot of TO bitching happens in the game thread, and it's crazy to hold people accountable for that after the game.

Onto coaching, Mack definitely outclassed JT3. I know we really match up well with GT but they looked totally unprepared for the 1-3-1, and we've been doing it for months. Also liked fouling at the end, mixing defenses and keeping g Farr in more for his rebounding and D.

I was amazed when Josh Smith went over Myles back to stick back a rebound and fell on top of him and they called a foul on Myles. I was fully expecting them to rule out the score and call the foul on Smith.

Georgetown struggles with the 1-3-1 zone because they are the poorest 3 point shooting team in the Big East. That is why Xavier used it. It was less effective after JP went out though because he does a great job at the top of the key with his energy and long wing span.

I hope this is an omen for Xavier in the coming years. Regardless of the outcome tonight, I think we have a very realistic chance on competing for if not winning the league next year and for the next couple of years with our young talent. Mack coached a good game last night and that locker room speech has me fired up to go out there tonight.

Georgetown is not the poorest 3 pt shooting team in the BE. Going into last night, they shot 35% from three as a team which was good for 4th or 5th in the conference. After last night, they are at .347% as a team which is 7th in the conference.
