I was really hoping we employed that strategy and we did it twice and executed it perfectly. Great coaching and great execution by the players.
Awesome.

It was absolutely the right call, but man the way we were shooting free throws, and the way we have had some really poor in bound plays this year, I was nervous as hell about it.

I think every coach in America learned from Miller's mistake in that game oh so long ago. Surely the guy sitting next to him at the time learned from it! Very nicely done.

Yeah I think Miller said he would never not do it again.
I used to be kind of against it, at least until like 5 secs or under but we did it with 10 sec left after running a few second off and I was really happy we did. We werent going to win an OT game. We had to win in regulation.

For what it's worth, KenPom did a pretty in-depth analysis on the "Fouling when up 3" strategy and basically found it's a wash compared to playing straight up defense. Fouling actually greatly increases the chances of losing in regulation (12x as likely). Overall, not fouling has been a slightly better proposition in college basketball (93.5 Win Pct vs 92.0).
It worked for us today and that isn't surprising because it usually does. But not fouling would have probably worked also.

I don't know about not fouling. GTown was rolling at that point and had a ton of confidence. With how X was struggling, fouling was a great move. SO glad it worked out!

Except we were choking at the line when we went to the strategy.

But wouldn't this depend on how much time is left in the game? I imagine there's a huge difference between fouling with 7 seconds left and 2 seconds left.

I was so happy to see that. Nightmares were running through my head when we were up 3. Not only did we foul, but we fouled at the perfect time and still allowed a little clock to run before we did it.
Mack had the guys prepared last night, and the coached the hell out of that game. The players lost confidence and choked BIG TIME, but I am proud we were still able to pull it out. Lesson learned for sure.

Absolutely the right call. Mack did a terrific coaching job. Gt looked like they had never seen a 1-3-1. And you definitely foul at they end. Gus Johnson was calling the game, DsR would've hit a circus 3.

Or he could have been fouled in the act of shooting a 3, like Tu at the end of regulation in the K-State game that Gus called. I'm glad we decided not to go with that strategy.

Since Mack has successfully countered the strategy, he probably gave his players direction on how to avoid that situation.

Yeah, both fouls were executed perfectly.
We could not afford OT, we had to win in regulation.
