If you think yelling overrated is horrible, at least the student section didn't try to crush Butler in a stampede.

It's Kansas State. They haven't been there before (not often enough, at least).
That said, it's very dirty pool to rush towards the Kansas coaches and players.

They beat Kansas at home a few years ago. And a couple years before that. They have been there before.

They should have fun. Just don't kill anybody.

There are certain teams, Kansas being among them, that will have the court stormed on them every time they lose on the road.
Yet, Kansas State is the only place that seems to have this problem of charging at the other team's players and coaches. Most fans, and by most I mean all except K State fans, run toward mid court. It's just what's natural. K State fans actually storm the benches and scorer's table.
I actually like a good court storming. Teams that feel they're too good to do it really need to ask themselves who it is they're trying to impress, and why having fun and getting excited somehow prevents them from impressing those people. But, what goes on at K State is ridiculous. West Virginia is not exactly known for their cordial fans, but when even they storm the court, which they did a week ago, they don't charge at the other teams' bench. The guy that basically through a body check at Jamari Traylor shouldn't be allowed to come to any more games. Period.

That's true, but I heard today that Kansas State is something like 4 and 40-something against Kansas over the years. It is an extremely lopsided "rivalry."

I was on the court at the Gardens when we beat UC when they were No.1. I won't act like I've never done it. But, and maybe it's because I'm a girl, looking back it was one of those situations that could have turned ugly in no time, and all it would have taken was one a-hole to turn it from a celebration. Having said that, I loved it and think everyone should try it at least once. But there is a difference between celebrating mid court around your team and purposefully acting like a jackhole and engaging in nonsensical f%$kery to hurt someone. It's not even a subtle difference.

KU has won 49 of the last 54 in the series, including last night. "Lopsided" is an understatement lol.

I was actually at the game last night, and that could've turned ugly really quickly. Throughout the game the students let out several "Fuck KU" chants that were so loud that apparently ESPN couldn't drown them out and had to apologize for.
And in my opinion it's obviously a KSU problem. This is the 3rd time KU has had the court stormed against them this year (OSU, WVU, and KSU), and this is the first time it's been an issue with Bill Self.
All it takes is one idiot for everything to go terribly wrong. Either an idiot fan instigating or an idiot player retaliating. There's no logical way to keep students from storming the court, but security HAS to take better care of the opposing team.

This kind of stuff is not cool and I hope we never have to argue this point.

So what you're saying is that K-State is just all kinds of classy. Shocking to hear, really, what with them having hired coaches named Huggins and Martin.

K-State fans are actually probably the nicest people on earth. Unless, of course, you're a KU fan.
It's not a rivalry that's seemed too heated to me from here in Wichita. A lot of that, I think, stems from the fact that KU so thoroughly dominates basketball, and K-State so thoroughly dominates football. There's really not that much room for too much smack/competition since both schools have their thing, and neither is a real threat to the other in those particular pursuits.

I think it's their frustration over having Weber as their coach. Nice guy I'm sure, but...

Gotta be honest, if I'm a drunk college student there is a 1000% chance I am storming the court if I beat a top 5 opponent.
If you're not hurting anyone then go for it.

Hopefully, like most "traditions" this storming or rushing the court will soon be stopped by either the NCAA, the conferences , the universities themselves. I have been involved in it as a professional covering the game and there is nothing funny, or Something to be explained by a platitude or encouraged as it is by many of the broadcasting entities covering the games. I have seen valuable pieces of equipment (not insured or paid for by the company you work for ) ruined. I have had a laptop broken by a drunken student who tried to imitate Edwin Moses by hurdling the press table. I've lost two tape recorders by sticky fingered students (at least they were young enough and had faces painted to indicate their current state in life) and in one instance owing to a strained knee ligament I was crushed and bounced around until an assistant coach who knew me pushed some of the crowd away and provided safe passage through the crowd for me and one of his team's players. There is no excuse for the rushing and someone is going to be seriously hurt if it doesn't stop. It's time for all the fans, students and others, to grow the f#@&k up.

There's your answer Q. Convince all the networks to stop broadcasting court-storming (just like when they avert the cameras from random fans rushing the field when a game is in progress).

100% agreed. It's going to happen, period, and I am 100% ok with that, hell I love it. Students are what makes college basketball atmosphere's so awesome and court storming just falls into that category for me. The biggest thing is that security needs to know how to deal with it.
Maryland's security did a great job of blocking off all of the players/staff and they all got out of there just fine. The Kansas State one was a little different as students were up in the faces of Kansas players and coaches, that is obviously not acceptable but that's also on the security staff for not being prepared for that.

But he did try to clothesline the guy and should be banned from the arena. There's no excuse for that. He's lucky the player kept his calm and walked away.

I'm not trying to hijack this, but I'd be interested to get people's feedback, especially those who can remember.
I'm of the opinion that for the most part, people aren't that much different today than they've ever been. I know that a constant motif in sport media (and seemingly everything else in society) is that things are degenerating.
In 1976, the NBA Finals between the Celtics and Suns gave us a crowd that was every bit as vulgar, wild, drunk and rambunctious as any student section today, and this wasn't even at a college game. Fans stormed the court before the game was even over at the end of one of the overtimes, and after they did so the game ended up in a second overtime. It caused a delay, and several fans attacked one of the referees.
It was the Boston Celtics. I think they had certainly "Been there before."
Now, again, I'm not excusing or even defending what happened at Kansas State. That's not the direction I'm trying to go. I'm merely saying that fans have always been fans, and people have always been people. If something like that were to happen at the NBA Finals today, the entire internet might crash. Yet, as it stands, it's considered one of the more iconic games and moments in NBA history. I'm under the impression that there were not around the clock editorials on how fan behavior needed to be cleaned up forty years ago, even though it was probably just as bad, if not worse, back then.
I think the media portrays things differently. I also think that to a point people's memories of things are different than the reality. But, with that said, I'm also of the belief that court storming and fan behavior are no more of an issue today than they have ever been.
