Well most UC fans still think that UC is an elite basketball team that can look down on Xavier. UC doesn't need to play X anymore, and this is Xavier's super bowl. So nothing has really changed over the years except for the players. The delusion of the Bearcat fan base never surprises me. Screw them and I hope Xavier blows them out. I would settle for a close victory as well. Zip'em up!!

Long time viewer, first time poster. All of my friends are UC fans (intelligent ones I like to think) and all besides maybe 1 or 2 of them think Xavier is going to beat UC pretty good. Xavier is the better team and anyone who has watched UC at all this year will realize that. They are downright painful and almost not watchable on the offensive side of the ball. Their defense is good but not as good as it has been in years past. Xavier just needs to go into that dump and just move the ball around and knock down some open shots (hopefully). You never know with the Crosstown Shootout but I am actually glad it is not at Cintas this year. In the past 3 road games Xavier has looked much better and could have easily been 3-0 in those games. This game almost feels like a playoff game to get into the NCAA Tournament for both teams. Going to be a crazy environment. GO X!

Nothing in this game could surprise me. We could blow them out or it could be the night where UC hits every shot imaginable and we can't stop turning the ball over. This team is equally capable of producing either result.

I think what makes this game one of the most exciting on our schedule each year is that nothing that has happened before this game matters - for either team. It's such an emotional game that it's best to expect the unexpected.

My UC friend and I started a new tradition...Annual College Basketball Double Header. An XU game and a UC game in the same day. For our 1st Annual event we choose a criss-cross (XU/Marquette & UC/Temple). Former Big East, former A-10. Good time. Fully expected for UC to get blown-out, but they shot lights out for the 1st time all season. Dropped 55 on Temple in the 2nd half with lock-down defense. They are capable. Nothing would surprise me--a blow-out or a blown-out. Thought Mack figured out how to coach this team. Obviously I was wrong. Still have hope. Still hate UC.

Just can't seem to get up for this game this year. More worried about beating Butler and St. Johns. While this game would be nice to win X has to finish at least .500 in conference IMO to get an invite this year. Plus this ain't the UC teams of old.

So... if '94 Grad blasts the UC mascot in the back of the head with his last ball, is that good clean halftime fun? Or a serious "confrontation"? Mascots should keep those giants heads on a swivel.

Eh he's ok, much better than that hack Koch ( who is now somehow on UC's staff). UC fans pretty much hate the print media of the city as a whole because each writer always comes off as having a personal vendetta against the University.
Side note, I get the premise of this article below, but I thought her top 10 was pretty bad. Maybe that's just my UC bias showing though.

I knew Koch left but didn't know where he went until you mentioned it. Being on UC's staff though doesn't surprise me. Maybe he did appear out to get the university as a whole but he was such a suck-up to Cronin specifically. And yeah, he is a hack.
I agree that Daugherty is okay, not terrible. The problem is that he is presented as one of the better reporters out there instead of what he is, mediocre and kind of a tool.

Really really really nervous about this game for the same reason everyone else is... I have no idea what to expect from X. I feel like I know how UC is going to play. I expect some really good defense, a loud crowd, some bricks but also some dagger threes..
Whether X comes to play like they can or not and continues it for 40 minutes is the biggest mystery of the year.

This is a game that when we are supposed to win, we win. And when we are not supposed to win, sometimes we do. And some of those times when we are not supposed to even be close, the game is up for grabs in the last minutes.
If I were UC, and thank God I'm not, I would not play us for all the tea in China. True, its our game of the year, always has been and always will be.
While those folks up north are always harping about how they are our biggest rival, they are just kidding themselves. UC is our rival, in any sport. And thru the years when we had football, Miami might well have been our second biggest rival.
I think we will win and I think we will win because we have better players and we have better coaching. Our players want this win, because their fellow students want the win. That is the big difference. There are literally thousands of UC students and alumni who don't even know the game is being played Wednesday night, or even care. But, you'd find that Musketeer easily.
I always loved the UC games, the atmosphere surrounding it, the load approval of a play, the hearty booing of a call, and grinning like a Cheshire Cat when we count down the winning final minutes.
To Chris, the entire team, and one for all.... go get 'em you Musketeers, go get 'em

For UC, playing at US Bank is a considerable upgrade from The Shoe/5/3rd/whatever. For starters, US Bank has actual seats and the neighborhood is much safer. My kid's grade school has nicer bleacher seats than UC, and the only thing that makes the crime rate in Clifton look paltry is ISIS.

Totally agree about the 95/96 team, and D Will was one of my favorites also. That was a talented group and he was EASILY the most talented before his injury. Just a pure scorer, with explosive moves. Will never forget his dunk off the opening tip against UMASS. The Gardens exploded after that!

Mick was very, very upset after the brawl because of the hostile environment he walked into at Cintas. There was blue paint being thrown from the student section and the refs refused to put an end to all the trash talking. I'm sure you could argue that the players should have had a little bit more control regardless of the situation, but that's why Mick is not a fan of going back to Cintas.
And we support Mick because he's a genuinely good guy. He's UC through and through. With all the football coaching defections we've had, its nice to have a guy that's dedicated to the program no matter what. He's turned down better job offers and has consistently fielded tournament teams over the last few years. Above all else, he rescued us from the mess that ensued following the Huggins expulsion. I get that he's short, ugly, and has a temper, but I don't really see what there is to hate about him. Everything I've heard is that he's a stand-up guy. He's a single dad raising a young daughter and trying to push through a serious medical condition, how could you possibly have any animosity towards a guy like that?
First and foremost I pray for him to get well. Everything else is secondary. Jokes and snide comments hopefully can come later after he's fully recovered.

As for the trash talking, maybe Mick should have told his players not to run their mouths to the media before the game. Perhaps, had he been so conscientious about the consequences of trash talking then, things would have been quieter on the court.
Clearly Mick has rewritten the history of what went down that day and uc fans are such sheep that they're following along. Cronin has made the uc fan base a bunch of whiny babies in his image. They must all be so proud.

I too was at the game, albeit, I had scored some last minute tickets and was seated rather high. My memory has also faded from that game, so I'm not all that confident in my recollection of the blue paint. I thought I remember seeing video of it at some point, but can no longer find it. Regardless, it seems we would get nowhere arguing such a point.
If you have any specific stories about Mick acting like a douche, I would love to hear them. From my accounts, hes been a respectable guy. I can't take your word for anything to the contrary if you don't provide anything substantial to base your claims.

Clearly Mick has rewritten the history of what went down that day and uc fans are such sheep that they're following along. Cronin has made the uc fan base a bunch of whiny babies in his image. They must all be so proud.

Youre misinterpreting what I said. I never asserted that Xavier was responsible for Mick's reluctance to play on the home courts. Rather, it was the hostility of Cintas, I.E, the home court, that was the cause for conflict. Cintas is a nice, compact arena with a very active fan base, and it is not a fun place for opponents to visit. That, in and of itself, is no cause for shame. However, when a heated rivalry such as this is placed in that kind of environment, it can be troublesome. And, obviously, Mick will have his own bias (just as the Xavier fan base will have theirs) and feel as if he may have been the victim to some extent. But, as far as i'm concerned, he acknowledged his own shortcomings in the aftermath and tried to discipline his players effectively. Just as Chris Mack did to his own. Both sides were clearly at fault, but the nature of the rivalry itself played a major role in creating the conflict. Hence, Mick felt a change needed to be made to prevent that.

I wouldnt want to go to Cintas if I were Mick either. How could he want to leave?
"Ok guys, back to Shoemaker/5/3/whateveritscalled"
That has to be depressing after being in the Cintas Center.
Going to Cintas is a reminder of how truly shitty their own arena is.
Yes, our arena is awful. Its outdated and makes for a poor viewing experience if you do not have the right seats. Thankfully, we just hired the same architect firm that designed GABP and the YUM center to renovate 5/3. I believe we are downsizing to a capacity similar to that of Cintas to provide a more condensed experience.

What kind of environment would that be? One where fans actually show up and are loud? Sounds awful.

Mick May be a good guy, I don't know. He's certainly a douche bag evidenced by his mannerisms on the sidelines and the way he conducts himself at times.

I've told these stories on here before, but I'll tell them again.
My best friend at X studied sport management with me. His family has excellent connections throughout the Ohio region and he was able to get a job with UC football after he graduated. Working within the athletic department, he often found himself at UC events such as basketball games. He told me two stories of Mick that are how I envisioned him.
1. Mick was pissed during some game going into half. His team was playing like shit (I cannot remember against who, it doesn't really matter) and he was screaming at his guys in the huddle. They try to run a play and they screwed it up and Mick throws his jacket down on the ground as they march into the locker room. Two minutes later, Mick is chastising someone as they walk back out onto the court, telling the kid that if he ever throws his jacket on the ground, he's the one who has to pick it up. Mick watches the kid pick it up and storms back into the locker room with the kid carrying his jacket.
2. It was a fall day around the office. Mick comes in with a UC hoodie on, the hood pulled all the way up and tightened around his face somewhat. It's tight enough that it's difficult to see the guy's face. As he comes into the office, after a few minutes, he finally pulls the hood down. Someone who my friend was talking to at the moment asked Mick, "It's not that cold or windy out, why did you have your hood up so tight?" Mick's response was, "I didn't want anyone to recognize me and bother me..." The word "CRONIN" was written across the hoodie. Classic Mick.
I hope he recovers. I have no reason to believe he's a bad father and commend him for trying to raise a child on his own. I have no ill will towards the guy outside of the basketball realm. That said, those are two firsthand accounts of Mick that I will never forget.

My sister frequented Head First downtown when she worked at a company near there. Obviously you get to know the bartenders and whatnot. I guess Mick was dating for a time one of the ladies who worked behind the bar. All my sister told me about it was Mick treated his girlfriend who worked there like shit. I'm 6'3" and don't know what it's like to have a Napoleon Complex but he sounds like he has one. None of that really surprised me from things I'd already heard.
That all said, I don't wish any ill-will towards the guy. I hope he recovers from his ailment and is back on the sidelines this season or next.

The teams have marginalized this game themselves. The game is during rivalry week on ESPN at 7pm on ESPN2...I mean what more do you want? If the teams had both played better throughout the year, there would be more hype, but neither of these teams deserve it quite honestly.

I don't know Mick, had a class with him at UC and seemed like a decent guy. However I wouldn't want young kids anywhere near his bench. He throws more f bombs and degrades his players more than any coach of have ever seen. So if he is so bent on Xavier fans actions maybe he should be more respectable of people and watch how he talks to players and refs on the sidelines.

UC rubbed it in Xavier's faces the year before ('10-'11) when they beat X by 20. I recall UC taking 3's in the final minute, and had starters in, etc...
X gives it right back to UC the next year, and UC Flat Out could not handle it.
Trash talk, pushing and shoving occurs...and UC lands a few punches.
Somehow UC comes out of it looking like the victim when they were just as culpable, if not more. But X provided the sound bytes that everyone was looking for, and Mick gets his perfect storm.
To this day, I am still amazed that a team/program with the reputation of UC got the "pass", and X was shown no benefit of the doubt. What a freaking joke.

I don't think either team, especially UC, got a "pass" in the situation. Both were lambasted by the media. The only difference was UC came off as embarrassed by the incident, while Xavier appeared to double-down on the altercation with that absolutely idiotic press conference. Not that I agreed with the public perception afterwards, but people seemed to more readily forget the felonious assault Gates and Mbodje committed in front of the world because of how quickly UC *appeared* repulsed by the incident in the aftermath.
Sidenote -- I always thought it interesting how Mick was applauded for his outrage after the game while Mack was chastised for not being upset enough. In reality, I think Mick was able to appropriately channel his disgust in his team's play into outrage and embarrassment over the fight. If the shoe was on the other foot and UC had come away with a 23-point win, I don't think Mick would have been nearly as upset in the aftermath, if at all. He likely would have defended his players, rather than throw them under the bus as he typically does after a UC loss.

This is hilarious because I observed the exact - and I mean exact - same behavior at a table at Arthurs in Hyde Park. Hoodie, pulled awkwardly up in a way that draws more attention than it prevents, Cronin on it, and he loudly told his waitress that he was doing it so nobody would notice him. I never saw anyone work so hard to get noticed. That was more sad than anything.
I hate "Mick Cronin the coach". I have not made any attempts to hide that fact. I could probably start a whole thread about it. As a man, I wish him no ill will. I have heard from sources that I trust that he is a good father, despite the situation that he is in. I can respect that. He has a vascular condition that could be problematic for him. He is taking care of that. I can respect that. He made a pass at one of the most attractive women I know at a bar one night. He got shot down in a blaze of glory, but he put himself out there. No disrespect there either.
As a coach, I hate him for having even less integrity than Bob Huggins did. In my mind, there is nothing worse.
I am going to enjoy thumping them on their home court. I will enjoy it a little less because Mick won't be there, but he's still the head coach of this team, and I want to pin another loss on him.

Huggins and Mick have both made up stories about stuff being thrown at them and their team at Cintas in an effort to get out of playing there and getting their asses kicked. It's bullshit, I have personal knowledge of the situation when Huggins brought his team in and nothing like that occurred, ever.
And on the brawl, funny that it happened right in front of the UC bench yet Mick was nowhere to be seen. Until after it was all over and he could talk about how Tu was talking to his bench. Remember when Lance Stephenson was yapping at the X bench? Was there a brawl?

Yeah, ESPN has all kinds of respect for their AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAC contract. Arguably the biggest non-conference game on the league schedule and arguably the biggest OOC rivalry, and they schedule it in ESPN2 vs Louisville and a Syracuse team that is on self-imposed "probation and the North Carolina/Duke game later.

I already stated that my recollection of the paint was hazy and that I would drop the point. It serves no purpose attacking me on that front when I simply dismissed the notion myself.
And these stories about Mick are interesting. But two things:
1) Mick is not the first coach to drop an F bomb on the sideline. You ever seen Frank Martin coach? Bob Huggins? Those guys could be maniacs on the sideline. I think Mick just looks comical because of his odd facial expressions and quick temper. But, Micks players have never seemed to have an issue with him. If its true that he's making them pick up his jackets, then its surprising to me that guys like Sean Kilpatrick, Justin Jackson, Titus Rubles, etc. still attend games. Furthermore, we used to make a joke of it when Mick's jacket came off, and it has been awhile since it has. I don't think an attitude on the sidelines warrants the label of a "douche". You might not like it, and Chris Mack is obviously very different, but It seems to be pretty common.
2) The stories about him wearing a hoodie do not really make him seem like a douche either. Assuming they are true (and, as with all stories, they are probably not entirely) it makes Mick seem like he's either playing a joke or just being dumb. I don't think a guy whos making 2 million a year would actually think its a good strategy to get attention by pulling his hood tight like Kenny from South Park and shouting out his intentions to those around him. It seems far fetched, to the say the least.

Caupain and Cobb are their go-to guards. Cobb can flat out get hot and kill us. Clark is their better big man but Ellis is their biggest guy in the middle. When he is out they are forced to play smaller. These guys can defend against the best teams out there, however, they have very few shooters. When those guys are cold, score in the 40s and low 50s.
XU flat out has to limit turnovers and shoot decent tonight. I think if UC goes cold the 1-3-1 could be effective against their offense.
I watched UC against SMU, neither team had any shooters to speak of but UC stays in games by doing a few small things right. Defend and rebound and closing passing lanes are things that team does well. Their offense is putrid.

KYXU & KELLERNR,
Is either of your lines the one found in this morning's Enquirer? My friend and I have designated only that line as the official one that will determine the winner of our bet.
I found mine on a vegas site. not sure what the enquire line was. sorry
No blue paint was thrown. That is a downright lie. I was right there. Secondly, I can have animosity towards Mick because I have met him a couple times in public and he is an absolute douche to people
I don't know why this is always a debate. Yes, a bottle of paint was thrown from the student section's right side, towards the UC bench. It just hit the ground, security quickly grabbed the student who did it, and sat him down on the arena floor. I'm not sure what punishment he got, but I watched it happen and know the kid who did it. It was after the brawl ensued and things were quieting down. Thankfully, no UC player made a big deal about it, because security did.

I was wrong. Brian Williams didn't throw the first gallon of paint. Cataclysmo IS Brian Williams! The fog of blue paint wars has made his recollection hazy.
As to your first point: I don't think using Frank Martin and Bob Huggins as examples of why it's okay to coach a particular way is a good move. It's like arguing that the Soviet pogroms were acceptable because Hitler had already orchestrated the Holocaust. I can add another story to those mentioned above. I know someone who was recruited by Mick Cronin to play ball at UC. After attending a game, he told his dad he would never play ball at UC because he couldn't play for a coach who talked to his players that way. He was a teenager appalled by what he witnessed, and this kid is no choir boy.
As to your second point: I find it hilarious that you think the stories about how Mick acts in public are far-fetched, but you're willing to promulgate the story about the UC bench being covered in blue paint. The blue paint story is even more verifiable than personal anecdotes, and yet you willingly spread it around until being called out on it.
Finally, we anxiously await your heartfelt congratulations.
1) I wasn't using Martin and Huggins as examples of good coaching. I was simply stating that they exemplify the passion that many coaches exude into their performances. Chris Mack is probably one of the more tame guys out there, but in this age of basketball, it seems as if coaches dance like mad men on the sidelines to convey their points. Mick is no different. And i've never heard a story about a recruit that found Mick to be repulsive, personally. All I have to go on are the former players who still communicate with him. Lance Stephenson, Kilpatrick, Jackson, Rubles, Yancy, Cashmere Wright, and Jaquon Parker (who is on the staff now), all come to mind.
2) Perhaps you should recheck the definition of "promulgate". I stated it as a point, and then back tracked in my next post. I have since dismissed it entirely, and I apologize for even bringing it up. In no way did i "promulgate" the point.

Holloway and Wells too. And for that matter, Cheik Mbodj, Octavius Ellis, and perhaps Mark Lyons.

He really is a pussy. He knows the chances of him winning at Cintas are very low so he makes up excuses on why not to play here. He acts like Cintas is some bastion of anarchy and violence, where anything goes. In reality, its mostly old white people who cant bother to stand up once during a game. I don't recall ever even seeing a single fight at Cintas. I hope he never goes to a Reds or Bengals game, he would be asking the city to move the teams.

True but that was one of those rare losses, at least for me, that to an extent you arent distraught over because your team really gave everything they had and were spent. I dont think there was any way we would win the next game two days later. That would have been miserable losing to Butler to send them to a Final 4. Plus there were just so many big time moments between Tu and Crawford in that game.

So, now you want to tell us how good of a person Mick is because people like Yancy Gates and Lance Stephenson think so. Really? You listed those two guys as being fans of Cronin's as a way to show us what a wonderful specimen of humanity he is. I, being a Xavier grad, was able to go the extra mile and extrapolate from the list of names you provided the fact that two of the men you listed are well-known for being violent people. Generally, when one is trying to prove that one is a glowing, respected, liked member of society, one doesn't include in his references criminals, because most people (UC fans seemingly the exception) seem to find criminal behavior abhorrent.

You are correct. It was a bottle. And unlike what UC fans and coaches say they recall, it was absolutely not thrown at them. It was thrown (quite successfully) onto the court where it created a blue stain a couple feet long. Not only was the paint not thrown into the stands, it actually landed in bounds inside the court.
