Welcome to Sparkle City!
The Muskies begin the year in the South, where it's suppose to be warmer (currently 32 degrees).
Playing 4 games here at Wofford against Army, Wofford and BC over the weekend.
They return to the Upstate next weekend for a 3 game stint in Greenville against Furman, PC and Indiana.
Kick some a$$ Muskies!

There they are. Right in your back yard. You'd better go or you're not a real fan.
Good luck to Coach Googins and the Mudville Muskies!

Up 1-0 after the first. On pace to score every inning the whole year

Now, THAT'S positive thinking.

3-0 Xavier in the 7th. Are the Muskies going undefeated this year? Maybe.

Xavier took at 5-1 lead to the bottom of the ninth and escaped with a 5-4 win when Army's runner from second was cut down at the plate 9-4-2 on a single for the final out of the game.
So pretty much a routine win to go to 1-0.

In 6 of 8 games involving BE teams finished so far today...Xavier is the only BE team with a W.

And St. John's is getting pounded by Georgia Tech at the moment

Anyone know where the team was picked to finish in the big east this year? Are we supposed to be better or worse than last year?

Xavier was picked 4th behind St. John's, Creighton and Seton Hall.

Sounds like we need a "Closer".

Not a good day for Xavier baseball here in Spartanburg.
Lost the afternoon game 14-7 to BC. Must have been a long game, with little time to turn around before the next one started at 6.
They came over from the Upstate campus to the Wofford campus to play Wofford, and were still wearing the same uniforms.
Lost a tough one to the Terriers 11-3.
Did get to meet some of the kids parents, who drove mostly from Ohio to watch their sons play.
(They thought it would be warmer down here. It was damn cold with a stiff wind the whole day today).
Last game of the series tomorrow against BC again.

Three one-run games over the weekend for the Muskies. 1-2 with losses to Furman (1-0) and Indiana (7-6) and a win over Presbyterian. 3-4 on the year now. A three-gamer at #7 (for now) Louisville next weekend certainly won't make things any easier. Louisville does not appear to be as stout as their preseason ranking, though, as they're 3-3 through 6 games, having lost 2 of 3 to Arkansas State over the weekend.

Xavier managed a split at #16 Louisville today. Rubber match tomorrow.

Xavier/Louisville 0-0 headed to the 4th in Louisville. Would be nice to see the baseball team get a series win over the 16th ranked team. Would be a good omen for March for the athletic program.
Lost 2-0. Still, an encouragingly competitive series. The Big East is never going to be a particularly good baseball league given its geography, so Xavier is going to have a chance to compete for championships if they can even be "pretty good".

The bad news is that the Muskies have lost 10 in a row to stand at 4-14. The good news is that 8 of those losses have been at Louisville, Auburn and Tulane, and there are no teams like that in the Big East.

Ever dreamed of seeing Xavier in Omaha playing in the CWS? Well, this weekend is probably about as close as you're going to get to realizing that dream. Wish I was able to make the roadie to Omaha this weekend. Would have been fun. Hopefully someone is taking pictures.

Why all of a sudden is our baseball team awful again? Did we lose a ton from last year? I know it has to be a bit difficult to recruit based on the facilities the team has, but I thought they were moving in a positive direction?

They're also facing 2 of the better teams in the Big East - the same ones (Seton Hall and Creighton) that Xavier beat in the Big East tournament last season.
As for GoMuskies' previous post, don't forget that the Big East Tournament is also in TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha this season as well.

Our baseball team may be shitty this year, but they are taking the lead of the basketball team: they're beating the everloving hell out of Georgetown this afternoon. 17-2 in the 7th.

All is not lost this year. The Muskies "improved" to 14-36 by knocking off the Bearcats 5-1 today in Clifton.
Sounds like they're getting the "important wins".
(I'm pretending Dayton never happened.)

Louisville is 23-4 in the ACC and ranked #2 in the country, and Xavier beat them on a Friday (typically the day you get #1 pitcher vs. #1 pitcher).
Okay, I've exhausted all the positives from the season.

WTF happened to them this year? I thought our pitching staff was pretty solid.

Looks to me like it was mostly about the (lack of) hitting. The team hit .249 this year and slugged a pathetic .339. Compare that to a .283 average and a .389 slugging percentage last year, and it's easy to see why the team scored only 4.25 runs/game this year against 5.6/game last year.
The pitching was bad this year (4.89 ERA and 223 BB vs. 338Ks), but it was only marginally better last year (4.47 ERA and 234 BB vs. 303Ks).
