I don't think that they had courses in African American Studies at North Carolina when Dean was coaching.

That all started in 1992, well before Coach Smith retired. If you've been paying attention, though, you know that the issues there are much more an institutional, academic scandal than an athletic scandal. Which, of course, means it's much more important.

I was always cheering against his teams, but Coach Smith was certainly a class act.

Knew him as a reporter both in close non-tournament situations and in the tournament scenes. Sadly I was caught on camera after the first tourney his team won on MJ's rookie shot . He was a class guy no matter what the occasion.

You know a guy is the real deal when everyone praises him and most say even a better person than coach.
