Well, every game the rest of the season is the most important game of the season. They're all important at this point. So we start with today's most important game, Providence. Here's hoping they win today's most important game of the season.
Tomorrow, I'm getting an early start on my annual Lenten X-Hoop hiatus. It's tough, but fulfilling. Hope to see some of you at a game yet this season at Cintas, or hopefully an NCAA tournament game.
In the meantime signing off until Easter. A blessed Lenten season to all and of course, GO X!!!!

I think Xavier is going to give up the three-point line against Providence to stop dribble-drive penetration and because overall Providence is bad from 3. God, I hope that doesn't backfire.
Edit: Providence have a lot of guys in the low 30s%. That's the kind of range where streakiness is just expected.

Gave up 40 in the 1st half... gonna need to reverse our 2nd half woes.
Solution to about 1/3 of Xavier's problem: NEVER LET JAMES FARR SHOOT OUTSIDE 3 FEET! I can shoot better than that guy. He's been shooting jumpers all year, and it's basically a turnover.

What was it: 3 attempts in the final possession, ending with a Farr whiff?
Matt has become virtually useless as of late.
The inability to get more shots to fall is mind boggling.
And I just saw where Creighton got blown out by the Johnnies.
We are a hot mess.
Macura has done some nice things but he and Farr are killing us from outside.
Having our slower bigs (Stain and Sean ) hedge or come all the way out beyond the high post to guard has created two easy buckets. What could possibly the benefit of having them do this. We have just been toasted everytime.
Austin in instead of Randolph.... Why? Randolph is shooting over 50% from 3... Not many attempts but still... He has more to offer at this point.

Just mack and his senseless stubbornness.
Ridiculous that they so easily tied it up after we went up by 10.
Line up change by Mack to sit Jalen and go with 3 slower not very productive players (SIain Sean and Macura) killed us. What an odd lineup.

63 of 74 from the freshman and sophomore classes today. 13 assist from Dee. That is solid and Dee should just set guys up each game and bag the three point shot.

Dee with 15 assists......awesome! We need this win badly and we get it. Matt looked like he was still nursing an injury. It's too bad we lost our home winning streak to the bottom team in this league. There is no easy win in the BE and we have to play at our very best to win any of the remaining games.
Great win. Go X ! I was quite depressed going into this game and today's victory gives me a much needed lift in spirit.

Rick Broering on the most recent podcast made the comment that Reynolds is becoming the best big in the conference. It's hard to disagree.
You're not going to get that agreement from a lot of people.
I think O'Mara was just playing better than Farr on both ends. As for Abell, he didn't look that great today (EDIT: outside of some good transition plays), and Myles, Trevon, and J.P. were all having good games, making it hard to find minutes. Also, that trio was playing really good team defense, even J.P.
By the way, yes, J.P. was playing very well, despite not hititng his threes until near the end. I saw some wanted him on the bench, which showed they weren't really seeing all the good he was doing elsewhere.

As for Remy, while I love him, they may have thought some of his value is diminished when they spent more time in the zone. Just a thought. Or... he may just have ticked someone off. Deep teams always have issues with minutes.

I too was very impressed with O'Mara. I remember thinking near the start of the season that he seemed to be the most adept scoring freshman center we've seen in a while. When he gets the ball down low, he fights for good position and makes the easy bucket. It is good to see that he is progressing well, bringing more than just minutes to the game today. Obviously he is still young and has a lot of room to grow, but I was very impressed with him today.

I think the big issue is still system defense. Abell is the best individual defender on the team, with only Dee being close, but he doesn't play within the system well. Today, Myles, Trevon, and even J.P. were all playing within the system well, plus they were having good offensive games in the halfcourt sets.

Had to follow the game online at work, what defensive adjustment did Mack make?
The key defensive adjustment was that Xavier shot 53.7% from the field and 36.4% from three-point range. Defensive shortcomings can disappear quickly when you make over half of your shots.
Actually, the defense in the second half was much better - Mack went to the 1-1-3 zone. Providence shot 59% in the first half and only 33.3% in the second.

Well here's some good news for X fans:
We almost outscored them with Freshmen and Sophomore's. Yep, we got a bunch of youngsters that can fuck up at anytime, but are also pretty damn good when they decide to play.
Rick Broering on the most recent podcast made the comment that Reynolds is becoming the best big in the conference. It's hard to disagree.

Agree with much of what you are saying... But I can not let JP off the hook that easily. Yes he showed he can help with some nice passes and driving/ getting to the line... But man... He really hurt us once again with some bad shooting from three - not only was he 1-7 from behind the arc but most of those misses turned into buckets for Providence... One time JP missed a three and within.7 seconds someone was shooting a three right over him.
Listen, I love it when JP is out there playing smart and being a net positive, but his need to force up so many 3s again today made him a bit more of a liability and a net negative. If he would just stick to the other part of his game where he is playing well, it would be so much better for the team.
Leave the 3s for now to Myles and Remy and Bluiett.

Well here's some good news for X fans:
We almost outscored them with Freshmen and Sophomore's. Yep, we got a bunch of youngsters that can fuck up at anytime, but are also pretty damn good when they decide to play.
Exactly
I posted the following a few weeks ago:
This team has a total of 9 seasons playing for X (Dee has 3, James has 2, and so on).
Next years team will have a total of 14 years playing for X, and that's with losing 6 years from Dee and Matt. Again, not excuses. I'm just trying to illustrate that you cannot discount experience in terms of playing together and playing in Xavier's system.
Growing pains suck. As others have referenced, we aren't in the A10 anymore so it's not as easy to hide our flaws. Not saying that to be a jerk, it's just true.
The future is bright! I hope they guys can get it together by this March!
Listen, I love it when JP is out there playing smart and being a net positive, but his need to force up so many 3a again today made him a bit more of a liability and a net negative. If he would just stick to the other part of his game where he is playing well, it would be so much better for the team.
Leave the 3s for now to Myles and Remy and Bluiett.
Myles is a stud after being allowed to finish last year something like 2-23 from behind the arc. I know it's frustrating, but I doubt he'd be the player he is now if he weren't allowed to play through that. I think JP has at least as much upside. Myles was getting the same kind of heat last year. I'll trust the coach over the fans. Nothing personal, you're not alone.

Xavier dodged a bullet today. I am sure that no one wants to consider this, but Providence was kicking our ass until Ed Cooley had to be taken to the hospital. He left and X went on an 18-2 run. You think that wasn't playing on their kinds?
Having said that, the defensive intensity and shooting were much better in the second half.

First and foremost, I hope Coach Cooley is okay.
Otherwise, I see your point, but I could point out that we took them to overtime AT Providence with EC on the bench the entire time. Coach or no coach, our guys stepped up.

Exactly. Trevon just had a shooting drought very similar to Macura's, going 1-17. Dante Jackson had a bad slump for much of the non-conference schedule his senior year, but he shot through it and started hitting again regularly in conference play (a year when Xavier went 15-1). Good thing neither took your advice.
Macura should stick to the other parts of his game where he is playing well? So, when a player isn't doing something well that he is normally good at, he should just stop that and focus on other things? What about when there's something else that he starts slumping on? He should stop that too? A player would eventually get whittled down to passing around the perimeter and doing nothing for his team, because there's no way to know when you're good at something again without doing it. That's especially true of shooting in a game. Also, that doesn't even account for the fact that if a player stops shooting threes, guys lay off of him and make it harder for him to do other things too. I don't doubt that Macura is still hitting threes in shootaround and in practice; that's why he keeps putting them up in the game.
By the way, despite going 1-7 from three-point range (2 of which were admittedly ill-advised), Macura still finished with an offensive rating of 106. That's pretty good.

I don't want JP to stop shooting threes either. I would like to see him get up and down the court a few times and get warmed up before he starts jacking them up. Also if he could make a couple free throws/lay ups first it would get him going. He will be OK eventually either way IMO.

I think it was either his first or second three of the day, but he was wide open but the shot still looked so rushed. If he had just taken his time I think he would have gotten a better result. I think what he most needs to do is take his time more on his shot. He'll either get away a better shot or decide not to shoot a shot he probably shouldn't be taking in the first place.

Just finished watching the UVA vs L'Ville game. If we are going to play pack line hedging man to man can someone send Chris Mack a tape of this game. UVA really knows how to play D.
We did mix in a lot (at least 2 different kinds) of zone yesterday...which we should have. Providence made their 3's in the first half (4-7) but you knew it wouldn't last- except for LaDonte Henton. That kid is a P...L...A...Y...E...R.

Ran a zone most of the second half. 1-3-1
Actually 1-1-3 and some 2-3 as well. Similar to what brought us back at Providence. Macura is good at the top of a 1-1-3.

As is Dunn. Dude is scary good. Made some tough shots yesterday. X was very fortunate/smart to get him in foul trouble.

For the record, I too did not watch this game. Let's all repeat this on Tuesday.

He's got good size and long arms. He's a real PEST. That's a good thing.

I would suggest those who did not watch yesterday be banned until further notice. Gotta stick with what's working.... Respect the Streak and all...

You can't include this little nugget and then tell us not to ask how you wound up watching this clash of the titans in person.
A guy in the business I support has a daughter who plays for the University of Denver. So my neighbor (who is this guy's boss and also one of my clients) and I decided to take our boys down to Tulsa to see our colleague and watch his daughter play. Seemed like a good idea at the time (and I'm glad we did it), but we weren't counting on the 70 degree February day. Not an ideal day to spend 5+ hours in a car and 2.5 hours in a gym. Also, even though the guy's daughter is a borderline all-conference player, Denver is awful and got mauled by ORU yesterday. So that wasn't great.
