I'm not a Five Guys believer. But in their defense, none of those look like chain outlets. For my money, though, nothing beats a Don's Original cheeseburger -- if you find yourself in Rochester, NY I highly recommend it.

This. Even the one in Mason which is closer to me, makes an excellent burger. Burger/fries and a beer for 6 bucks.

Yes, please.

Also, recommend Solly's in Milwaukee for their butter burgers.

I've been to the Cherry Cricket (#2) in Cherry Creek several times. Never been disappointed as they have over 30 toppings. Mac n' Cheese is killer as well. They do have probably the best burger I've ever had and a fun bar to boot. Pricey, of course.

The best burger in Minnesota is at the Boonie's Bar and Grill in Millersburg. You have to get the Boonie-Boonie Burger. 3 1/3 lb patties loaded with cheese, bacon, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, pickle and special sauce.

The worst burger in the world, meanwhile, is at the Mt Adam's Bar and Grill. Oh my God. I'd rather eat at McDonald's.

When I get back to places I used to live, my time is generally spent going to all my favorite places to eat. (Three meals a day won't get it done in most places - I just go from meal to meal.) When I get to Cincinnati, Zip's is at the top of the Must Do List. I enjoy the food and the atmosphere and it brings back happy memories.

OK, funny story - the first time I took my wife to Cincinnati we were on our way to see campus when she saw the Dana's sign. I said it was not even noon yet and that was a bad idea. She just kept insisting so we stopped to show her all the glory that is Dana's. Naturally, it was well attended by the 11:00am crowd. There was one short little black guy who barely broke 5 feet while looking 80 despite being about 50 and was behaving .... let us say... poorly. The poor bar maid was not frazzled in the least. She grabbed him by the back of his belt and coat and threw him out the front door onto the sidewalk, then locked the door. He started banging on the door with a force I didn't know he was capable of. We tought he was going to break the door down. Then he started screaming his hat had fallen off during his "eviction". He wanted his damn hat back! He was going to go home and get his damn gun and come back! The lovely barkeep unlocked the door, threw his hat out into the road, then relocked the door. Apparently, it never occurred to our shit faced friend to walk around to the side door, which was wide open. I then turned to my wife and said "THAT is why we wait until the preppy kids show up to visit Dana's". Eventually she picked her jaw up, her blood pressure stabilzed, and we went about the rest of our trip.

Quatman's was really good. I was surprised it wasn't as popular among my friends as some of the other so called good burger places. Zips is gross. I really can't put it any other way. I've given it a try a handful of times and have never finished my burger. Maybe it's a scam to get me to buy another beer, because their burgers really make you want to wash your mouth out with something else. Much like the chili joints, I've never understood the local popularity of that place. Dana's burger blows that nonsense out of the water.

Next time to town I need to put Quatman's on the list. I've never been there, but keep hearing great things. It's near campus, right? How long has it been there? How did I miss it? We used to go to Anna's for giant sandwiches that really needed a knife and fork. Too big and slippery to get in your mouth.

That's funny. When I bartended there, I don't recall handling any of the day shifts. Besides, when Dan Delaney owned it, I don't recall there being many issues with the locals. Then again, I'm using terms like "recall" at a time when I was bartending. I have no problem throwing myself under the bus given all that.

Yep, right off Montgomery, close to PRC (gravy cheese fries!). It's incredibly cheap, and basic (can get onions, pickles, mustard, and ketchup). Beer is cheap too. I'd personally take Zips, Arthur's (my favorite), or Gordos, but for what it is, it's done right.

I was born in North Norwood and Quatman;s was around mid 1950s aka Gribble's; the seminary faculty/students and workers from GM plant often took refuge there; Frambo can verify. The Mason location is more family friendly and I suggest the Rueben and take home some goetta. Also could find Norwood's finest most days.

It seems to still be operating in neighborhood mode, which is to say that it seems that certain times are to be avoided there unless you want to pile in with what feels like the entire hood.

Love Zip's. Plus you can run up the hill for a Graeter's afterwards.

Now you have me thoroughly missing Cincinnati.

I used to believe that the burger at Terry's was the best in Cincinnati, but it has slipped in my rankings because of the bun. Now Gordo's is at the top of my list. Outside Cincy, I have to say that the burgers at In-N-Out are the best. I just want to own a franchise around here but the owners won't let that happen.

My "obsession" with In-N-Out probably started with The Big Lebowski. I like the "animal style" burger myself. One of my favorite places in the LA area (not for burgers) is Neptune's Net on the PCH near Malibu. If you haven't been there, you should make the effort. OK, I touched on my love for Zip's, but since this is titled best burgers in the USA, there are a handful of places in the Sarasota/Bradenton FL area with a "Geckos" sign out front. Do yourself a favor and get a blue cheese burger, complete with tomato, lettuce and red onion. The recommended side is the homemade chips - best I've ever had. It's my first stop when I return to town. Damn, I shouldn't be hungry right now....

I think I've only been to flipdaddy's twice. Once, my burger was awesome, once it was so-so. Agree that they are living off the toppings, not off the burger itself.

They did (this was several years ago) have the Great Lakes Lake Erie Monster on tap for I think $4 for a pint, which was an insane deal. It might have been $5.

Still no Five Guys on the list.

Walt's Hitching Post makes ANY list the list is shit.

Unless since the late 90's Walt's has done a complete turnaround on their food, I laughed out loud, literally laughed out loud when I saw this.

It takes more than one visit every 20 years to stay current in Cincinnati restaurants. Walts closed in the 2000's and reopened a couple years ago under entirely new ownership and management. The menu is all new, with some important items carrying over ( the ribs and the salty rye for example). I haven't had the burger, but I wouldn't be surprised if they make a good one.

Believe me there are sillier things in this thread then commenting on a horrible restaurant reopening. To wit:

A list of 45 top burgers in Cincinnati. 45. There are probably 46 total places that make and sell burgers.

There is a burger on this list that cost $17. There is another that costs almost $20. Please that's silly.

And finally the top three finishers from the previous list five years ago (which I can't believe because Cincinnati loves to rank their food, as I enjoy the ranking of the fish frys in the spring) all finished in the bottom third this time.

So the awesome burgers from 5 years ago were replaced by over 30 newer or the same, or whatever, burgers in the city. One dropped from 2nd to 43rd. Why? Because service was "surly." 43rd best burger in the city, because of how the service and having to wait!

I wonder who finished 46. Dana's?

Just saw this Joe. Any Cincy list with Quatman's not in the top 5 is a bogus list! I always stop in when coming through the 'Wood.

[QUOTE=bjf123;483899]It's at the corner of Quatman Ave. and Montgomery Rd. in Norwood. It's been there since the mid 60s. There's also one in Mason. http://quatmancafe.com

Me: Hey what was the name of the ribs place used to go to in Cincinnati that we liked that wasn't Montgomery Inn.
Brother: Walts Hitching Post
Me: Was it Walts or something else?
Brother: Walts.
Me: What am I thinking of?
Brother: No idea.
Me: What's the other Hitching Post that was terrible?
Brother: The one in Hyde Park maybe?
Me: Was that Walts?
Brother: No, it's in Hyde Park if it's still there.
Me: Okay, I think I got it wrong.

There are some damn good burgers in the town I live in. Most of the things in town are done both poorly and stupidly, but for the most part they know how to do food. Not all of it. The pizza here is atrocious. But, most of it is done pretty well, including the burgers joints. If you like places like Zips and Quatmans, don't come here, because you'll see just how sub par they really are by comparison.

So to clarify, you wrote the entire thing off because you are the kind of "foodie" that confuses a hyde park strip mall fried chicken joint with a rib place on the other side of the river, using your expert memory from 20 years ago.

First of all don't EVER call me a "foodie." I'm not some hipster. Food to me is pretty simple, it's either good or it isn't.

And it's Cincinnati. Quit trying to argue that everything changes in Cincinnati. Mark Twain is laughing his ass off.

And I "wrote" the entire thing off because it's a random list of 45 burger places. The Walt's reference was something that jumped out at me. Please everyone, carry on with all the lists of how wonderful the food is in Cinncinati. Maybe we could throw up a list of the top 65 pizzas.

There's a simple burger place here in Spartanburg located in an old mill village.

Because of this thread, the little lady and I split a burger in the bar at the Precinct this evening. It was outstanding. Plenty for two. Fresh ground in house from some of the finest steaks in the country. Well worth $20 especially when you consider that it's big enough for two, comes with fries and you can get bread before hand. Add a $3 rhinegeist truth to that order during happy hour and you've got a surprisingly good deal for dinner for two for the Precinct.

Holeman and Finch Public House in Atlanta made a name for themselves by having a great burger, but only making 24 of them daily and only at 10:00pm. You get a name for yourself that way. After several years of that, they of course found a way to cash in on the fame. Not only can you get them all day, you can get one at a Braves game at Turner Field and elsewhere around town.... Talk about going from exclusive to profitable!

....and it continues!!!

I'm not a foodie. No one who talks about burgers is. A burger is perhaps the most awesome, yet most unsophisticated meal on the planet. It's beef between bun, with cheese.

Could a thread about the best grilled cheese generate this kind of response?? There is a discussion to be had. It's a great sandwich, and some do it better than others, and some are unbelievably awesome at it.

What about a peanut butter sandwich??

What about the best bowl of cereal??

IT'S A FREAKIN CHEESEBURGER!!!! My favorite burger is the one I grill myself. I'm not arrogant. I'm just practical. If I liked another one better, I'd simply make it the way they did. I like burgers. I agree that some are far better than others, but it's a fucking cheeseburger. Arguing over which one is the best is like arguing over which beer bottles you most prefer.

Now, don't get me wrong. This thread is why I LOVE Cincinnati!!! I wish I was back there. My town isn't nearly as interesting. Everyone pretty much just goes to bed.

Off topic a bit, but the best rib-eye I have ever eaten was a 14 oz. aged steak with a spicy rub from the Montana City Grill just south of Helena, Montana. With a baked potato and veggies, the cost was $31....a steal. The place was a dive and we ate in the bar next to their "casino", but the place was recommended to us at our Helena hotel where we stayed en route to Jackson, Wyoming from Waterton Lakes, Alberta last month. If you need a meal while in Helena, I strongly recommend this place.

Yeah I agree. If you don't have burgers on your menu and use words like "aioli sauce" and change the burger every week, I don't see how that could be considered the best burger in town.

I am extremely glad to see that my neighborhood dump, the Gaslight, came in #2 though, with what everyone would consider the traditional burger. The owners have become pretty good friends of mine, they don't do anything crazy with their burger, just put out an inexpensive, good burger. Apparently they skipped San Francisco because Golden Gate Park is the best park I've visited in the US and probably only a close 2nd to Paris for parks, as far as places I've visited. It's from some outfit called "Wallethub." If you don't recognize the name of the ranking organization I'm not sure how legit the list really is.

Send them a letter. Invite them to come by next time. They may not realize you have burger pride.

So, what's the deal with Quatman's burger? I've had it once. Don't remember it; wasn't enticed to go back. I admit I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to a basic burger as my parents were both good at the grill so we had burgers often. I didn't think Quatman's did a better job than I can do at home, which is not quite as good as what I ate growing up.

Quatmans is probably the restaurant burger that reminds me the most of a burger I'd make at home. Big beef patty, nothing fancy, few options, not hiding under a wide reduction 3 mushroom glaze or Boursin baked compote. Just a good, big, cheap burger.
