Wow, we are the only team that Georgetown has lost to by more than 6 points. I'll bet they will be looking for some revenge.

I can't stop thinking about this game. A win would be huge and could potentially send us on a big winning streak. Let's hope Mack and the boys shut the doubters up and take care of business on Tuesday night!

IF (and it's a HUGE IF) Xavier wins tomorrow night, I predict Xavier finishes 13-5 in the Big East.

If we win at G-town, I see us turning it on and winning 3 of 4 from Seton Hall, St. John's Marquette and Creighton. Those are arguably the 4 worst teams in the league (though I'd put DePaul behind all of them other than Creighton). If we can that first one at a place like Georgetown, I think the road wins come in bunches. And of course we're not losing at home.

Xavier is still going to want revenge for no-showing at the Verizon Center last year. They cannot afford a slow start for the 5th straight game.

Hopefully the mix of the team having urgency for a win on the road and the confidence from already beating this team will go hand in hand together and help X play a full 40 minutes. Should be interesting.. I don't think X can away with the same lineup as Saturday. GTown will kill em on the boards with Copeland and the other long guys they have besides Smith.

Both Reynolds and Farr had great games last time against Gtown...will need the same results from these two in order to beat Gtown at their place I believe. This will be a chance to knock off another ranked team this year!

I'm hoping for the best, but expecting much of the same as what we've seen on the road. With Xavier pretty much casting their lot with at least one half giving up 45+ points, I don't see anything factually changing this game. Emotionally, hopefully, yes my heart says something different may happen. However, factually and how X has defined itself so far on the road, plus Georgetown being a really good team playing at home with a revenge factor. I can't put this above a 15% probability of winning considering all of these factors. Hope I'm wrong.

waggy
01-26-2015, 08:12 PM
RPI Forecast has the probability at about 40%. I'd personally put it at no better than 20%.

My bet is that X left early today in anticipation of white death. Not sure how hard it's supposed to hit DC. I know that both NYC and Boston are supposed to get pounded. They may have a tougher time getting back to Cincy than they will getting to DC. Unless it is really bad, they should not have too much trouble getting into Newark for Saturday's game.

Not even two halves, I think a half and half a half would be sufficient for Xavier to get a quality road win.

I am excited for the game this evening. Our guys already know they can soundly beat a good Georgetown team.

Clyde's is one of the main pre game spots before any Verizon Center event. Greene Turtle packs up the fastest because it's connected to the arena, but their food isn't on the same planet as Clyde's (relatively new menu there and it's really good.) Clyde's is probably the close second in terms of filling up before games, because it's about 50 feet from one of the entrances to Verizon and there are several bars. There are some other places that fill up for people wanting to sit down for a meal, or some cheaper places with bar games within a couple blocks like Rocket Bar and Iron Horse, but Clyde's and Turtle still remain the first to fill in my experiences. I haven't been to the Clyde's in Georgetown in awhile, but the one across from Verizon is basically the same size and layout as far as I can recall. Champions in Georgetown has closed, can't remember when but it's been a little while I think.

Ah...I didn't realize there was a second Clyde's! My DC drinking was mostly done at Kelly's Irish Times and Dan's -- neither of which was convenient to Chinatown (I lived there mostly pre-Verizon). There used to be a sports bar around where DuPont and Foggy Bottom meet, that had very cheap pitchers. If I recall correctly it was down an alley.

Actually, there are more than two! There's at least one more in Rockville closer to where I live. Having gone to a Super Bowl party there last year, I was entirely unsurprised to learn that they were heftily fined a couple weeks ago for underage serving and, more notably to my experience, over-serving. They really do have good food now though, so there's that. But all in all, Chinatown is night and day different from when you must've last been around here. We used to be advised not to go around that area in high school. Given that it was only a handful of blocks away, and the willingness of certain places to sell certain things we couldn't get elsewhere, we mostly ignored that advice. But about 4 or 5 years after Verizon was up and running, it really transformed. I used to work in that area and there were/are a ton of great places to eat, drink and hang out. I'm excited for the same transformation taking place around the Nats stadium.

Also, I second SGarcia on RFD. Great place to drink some beers if you're into variety, and although it's been a long time since I've eaten there, I remember it begin solid.

I don't think this game is quite as serious as people are making it out to be in terms of potential negative repercussions. There's still the game against Seton Hall. Before, I felt the team needed to win two out of four of @Prov, vs. DePaul, @GT, and @SH for the margin for error to not be razor thin. I still think that. Winning tonight, on the other hand, gives the team a lot of wiggle room, with the potential still to do very well.

Edit: Of course, that still makes them game important, as a loss would mean they really have to win at Seton Hall.

Honestly, I don't think there are many tough road environments in the Big East. Creighton usually has a good environment, but their team isn't solid this year. I was talking tonight about this, but it's hard to understand why we haven't been great on the road. We haven't really had that tough of a road environment. I heard Auburn was tough, and I'd imagine Butler was. Other than that, the crowds have seemed pretty lame.

I really do think Xavier is one of the toughest places to win at. Especially in the Big East.

It wasn't so much the closeness of the game as much as what it would have felt like had Xavier blew that lead. I didn't want to get kicked in the balls again like the Providence game. Plus, I'm not so sure Xavier bounces back if they would have lost that game - it would have been devastating.

Winning is the ultimate elixir.

BTW, a direct comment from the Hoyas board: "Have to play 40 minutes in the Big East to win a game. We played for about 10 minutes tonight."

Chris Mack found a way to get them to go at it for all 40 tonight, as he otherwise coached a very effective game, including the very precise use of timeouts.

For the most part, I agree. Don't underestimate Marquette, though. I've been to four X/UD games at the arena, and I felt that the Bradley Center was louder last year. Bigger, and filled. Don't know how it will be this year, but seemed to be rocking for the Georgetown game. The student section they have is massive.

This is all so true. He's really coming into his own. Love his toughness out there, mental and physical. One more reason to trust Mack and his judgement. A lot of people wanted things handled differently late last year. The guy is a stud! (And I didn't expect him bringing the ball up as much as he did, with ZERO TO's.)

Just got home from the game. Just to hit on a few random things:

- Verizon Center was a freaking mausoleum tonight. Maybe it was because it was a Tuesday night and there was "bad" weather (which there wasn't) but there was absolutely no one there. And those that did show up made no noise.
- Finally we get a solid 40 minutes of basketball. And what do you know, they looked great. The Georgetown matchup is just really great for Xavier defensively. Matt matches up great with Smith and it doesn't force him to play outside his comfort zone.
- Myles Davis...how about him. He might be one of the most improved players in the conference right now. He's absolutely been a go-to guy scoring lately. On top of that, he's really stepped up on the defensive side of the ball.
- Trevon is finally getting shots to fall, which is really crucial for this team.
- Remy continues to dominate on defense. He has had stellar performances against DSR.
- Macura had a really sloppy game. He's just such a wild card out there.
- How does that inbounds play keep working!? We run it almost every single game to Matt. It used to be Mark Lyons' go-to play. Absolutely baffles me.
- A road Top 25 win is huge. Now 18 in KenPom, 25 in RPI.

Just keep winning. Let's start a little winning streak now.

Doubt this is the same thing but whatever. My friend from Georgetown got us tickets to the game...specifically asked for tickets not near the Georgetown bench since he was bringing 3 Xavier fans. The tickets were 5 or 6 rows behind the Hoyas bench. Whatever. I'm not an ass at games anyway...I wasn't being obnoxious or anything. Just the occasional fist pump or putting three fingers in the air on a made three.

He gets a call on our way home from one of his friends who is a manager. Manager tells him that one of the assistant coaches asked who the Xavier people were in their seats.

WTF!? Don't blame me for showing a smidge of emotion and certainly don't blame him for inviting me when he specifically asked for seats away from them and you put us there anyway. I was as respectful as possible but I'm not gonna be a freaking zombie like the rest of Verizon Center was tonight. Seriously assistant coach, I think you have much more things to worry about on the court...

Chris Mack found a way to get them to go at it for all 40 tonight, as he otherwise coached a very effective game, including the very precise use of timeouts.

Yes... You are spot on...dash. Mack coached a fine game tonight. Maybe the best he's coached ever.

He deserves props.

Tonight I think Mack and staff have realized they have hit upon something that's proving to fit this team nicely. The smaller and quicker lineup (replacing a forward for a guard) once again proved to help our players guard tighter, which made it difficult for their guards to find enough space to get off easy shots from behind the arc. When X switched back to adding another big, we got exploited a bit. Then Mack switch back to the small lineup again and we played better again. Additionally the smaller lineup creates many more fast break opportunities for X (i.e. it gives us an extra quick ball handler for the outlet). This has proven to be huge for X.

Nice job of calling quick timeouts when needed... Especially the one when Georgetown cut the lead to 10. As crazy as it may sound, allowing them to cut into single digest and then calling a timeout could have effected the confidence and given a bit too much psychological momentum to Georgetown.

Mack now even has his offense hustling on D and passing and moving around crisply on offense. Props.

Personally, before tonight, I never completely trusted Mack because I felt like he never showed that he completely trusted himself. To me, he's looked liked someone who has been running his team strictly by the rules and plays he learned from his mentors. But no two teams are the same. And tonight it was like a lightbulb went off... Like he realized he needs to take from his mentors what works and when it doesn't - abandon it and TRUST that he can find his own way with this team.

From the beginning of the season, I've believed this team has the ability to win the BE and go deep in the tournament, if only Mack could show them the way. Well he showed them and me tonight.

I was thinking the same thing about GTown being a good matchup for X. Which is great for X in getting two big wins against them, but also good to keep in mind when a team like Seaton Hall owns X last year. Sometimes your opponent just has your number. Doesn't mean you aren't a good team. The 2004 team matched up bad against Duquesne, the 2008 team had fits with STJ.

I digress...

Also, that's a great way to describe JP, a wildcard. I love the kid's game, and feel he's "this close" to a breakout performance. I bet Coach Mack and the whole team feel the same way. If he can get his game to slowdown just a tiny bit, everything will fall into place. As other have said, it's not from lack of effort or desire. Kid has moxie and is going to come up big for this team soon.

Is it Saturday yet?!?!

According to ESPN, the 5 game road losing streak Xavier just broke was our longest since 1987. Pretty impressive to go 27 years between 5 game road losing streaks.

OFF WITH HIS BOBBLEHEAD!..FIRE PETE GILLEN!.......Errrrrrrr........

This was by far the most stress free game I have watched this year. I DVR'd the game to go watch my nephew play his HS game. I left my phone in the car so I wouldn't get any alerts. I got home about at about 9:15 and went up to see my 8 year old before she fell asleep and she whispered in my ear as I tucked her in.."Xavier is winning by lots". I went downstairs made myself a little capper and watched the game with much relaxation..

It was a glorious evening

Looking at the stat sheet, it's amusing to think of all the FS1 teasers for the game featuring Jabril Trawick for Georgetown. He was nursing some kind of an injury, but he was limited to 7 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 6 turnovers. Compare that to Dee Davis who had 7 points, 6 assists, 1 turnover and 3 rebounds.

Besides turning the ball over 6 times, the Hoyas shot 13-24 from behind the FT line; Xavier was 25-32. This is not the way Xavier would win last year, and improved FT shooting made a huge difference last night. The field goal shooting was relatively even in terms of made shots for both teams.

Last night really was fantastic. The only lingering bad feeling I got from the game is that now I REALLY wish we could have that DePaul game back. Turn that loss into a win, and we'd be right in the hunt for the Big East title (or at least second place).

I think we are still in the hunt just obviously less room for error, and we will have to win that Nova game at home. We are only 1 game back.

IF (and it's a HUGE IF) Xavier wins tomorrow night, I predict Xavier finishes 13-5 in the Big East.

I guess I'm predicting Xavier finishes 13-5 in the Big East. Hell, if we win Saturday it might be 14-4. :)

In 80 minutes vs. Xavier, Georgetown has scored 106 points.

And that obviously includes beating UC. Works for me.

Cannot be said enough how much better the free throw shooting is this year compared to last year. Might help that Semaj isn't shooting half of them, but that was sooo frustrating last year. X has struggled here and there but for the most part really solid. Even Jalen hit em last night. That's a huge asset to have in March.

Yeah, it sems like at times to start games or in first half we struggle some on the line but down the stretch we have been pretty money with free throws this year. The second half yesterday I think we only missed one. And that is huge considering yesterday was our 3rd straight game that we got into the bonus with 12+ mins remaining in the second half.

Also, our FT could've been even better, seeing as how it was JP and Trevon, two of the better shooters on the team, who each missed a pair.

I love seeing Xavier completes sweep of No. 21 G'town as the lead story on ESPN's men's BB page.

I agree...

My favorite part of the article: "Cutting off passing lanes and effectively using halfcourt traps, Xavier held Georgetown to 4-for-16 shooting and forced 13 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes."

Just love reading that kind of stuff about this team.

After shooting 67% in two seasons at Xavier, he's shooting 76% from the line in the D league.

Free Throws were huge last night. GTown got within 7 and Trevon and Matt, although they didn't make both, made at least one to keep the Hoyas at bay. Remy and Jalen made 2 big ones apiece too when the crowd was starting to get into it.

I hope all this optimism is not lost when we hit a bump in the road. It happens people! I fear some may hurt themselves jumping off the bandwagon, so please be careful.
