View Full Version : Who would you want at Point Guard?

Since there has been a lot of discussion about Point Guard Play this year, I thought I'd list the Xavier Point Guards from the last 20 years and see which one you'd prefer to see on the court with this team.
I have NOT listed Michael Hawkins, Lionel Chalmers, Drew Lavender, Stanley Burrell or Tu Holloway because they are obviously the cream of the crop. The poll list above is much more debatable as to who you'd want.
So have at it!

Took me a while to get it up. Lot's of options. It also spans the coaches and who they decided to recruit. Chruch Odia didn't play enough to even register a blip.

Drew Lavender not even an option? I'd take him.

I'd go Lumpkin and then Gentry...Dee would be next. Gary and Steve were tougher than Dee, even though Dee is quicker, in my opinion.

Talk to your doctor.
I'll take Dee Davis again please.

When you're on chruches it limits your playing time.

Jason Kidd? John Wall?
Of this group, I will take Lumpkin.

Holy Crap! I thought Jaison Williams was obscure enough. I think Alvin Brown played more fill in point than O'Leary.

Who was Aaron O'Leary? A walk-on?
Jaison Williams was a good player. Alvin Brown had the worst looking jump shot I think I've ever seen.

Aaron O'Leary career line thanks to Go Muskie's legendary Aaron O 'Leary thread from May 2012 that only XBand responded to.

And Alvin Brown's shot was better than Jay Canty's.

Drew Lavender in a walk.
Joey Rey a close second

Lionel during the run was one of the best players in the world.
He got screwed on the charge call against Duhon. Screwed!

Whoa, 23 votes and no Mo.
On the old boards, he was as "poll-arizing" as one today.

Biggest reason I went with Dante is because I like having a 6'5 PG defender.

I'm sure Mo is a perfectly nice person, but I really hated watching him play basketball. Those teams were not good.

Those 20 years as MOR stipulated must really have progressed quickly.
IMO Finn, despite off court incidents, was the best player listed as PG; he even started ahead of Chalmers as Freshman.
Lumpkin gave 100% but was never going to be a true PG and seemingly regressed too much as a senior. Finn had better shooting form/skills than Dee Davis and Matta's slower pace of play eliminated decision making issues where Dee too often finds troubles. We wish that the current squad was as tough as the teams Finn and his cohorts were

Great points. I have a soft spot in my heart for Finn. After all he hit some HUGE shots during The Run. Tempted to pick Dante but he had maybe the worst handle of the whole group.

Still can see Finn hitting a 1st half buzzer beater from the left baseline @ Dayton and trotting from the court giving the "shhh" sign to their fans.

Since none of the above wasn't a choice I picked Lumpkin. Dedrick Finn would be runner up.

Jamal, but outside of the 20 year window.

Finn is a legit choice. Like X-Fan said he hit some very, VERY big shots during the run. He and The Desert Raccoon seemed to be oil and water though.
Underclassman Dedrick Finn, hands down, followed by some combo of Dee, Dante and Lumpkin. To be honest though, I don't really remember watching Gentry.

Sherwin Anderson just makes the 20 year cut. Since he wasn't listed I went with Dee.

Can you imagine if we had Drew Lavender, Terrell Holloway, and Mark Lyons on a roster together? That would have been enough to cause some alumni to have a stroke.

Great point. Dante was a key cog in some of the best defenses I have seen at Xavier.

But if you remember the boards back then, he was roasted for turnovers and his "jacking up shots". I loved the guy though. His effort was unsurpassed and his passion to win was off the charts.

I love that a guy who had the second lowest usage rate on the team was accused of "jacking up shots."

Correct, but much like one of my all time favorites Stan Burrell in his senior year, Dante's concentration on defense hurt his offensive game. He went from shooting 40% as a Junior to 36% as a senior and 40% on 3's to 32%. The guy always stepped up in the big games, however, including always nailing his first few shots against SucKS to get the team going.

Dante had some unreal clutch shots. As you pointed out he had big ones against UC, hit the buzzer beater in pre-season tournament (which, if you remember, was big come selection Sunday. Two of biggest wins that year was vt and Memphis). As a freshman he hit go ahead 3 in second half of the Georgia first round tournament game. Can't remember the team, but he missed a FT perfectly which allowed a tip in at the buzzer to go to OT- against a miserable team that could've kept us out of the tournament with a loss. Granted, he missed a wide open 3 in OT against Kansas state In sweet 16.
