View Full Version : Butler 2015: Uncle Buck

I almost went to Butler. It was close to home, in a big city, and still had the small campus atmosphere that we all craved. It made sense. Though I made the life-saving choice to attend the Catholic school in Cincinnati instead, Butler played a pivotal role in my life.
Butler was the epicenter for my developmental renaissance. The school demonstrated a great awakening in my virgin mind through its newfound existence that came about as an aberrational accession of sorts, a hiccup in the way our world works. The program exemplified everything that is cruel, callous, and corrupt about life through the game we all worship.
“But-ler”. The two syllables alone should send crawls of discomfort through the most mild college basketball fan’s skin. I could write endless words depicting my inordinate disdain for the school, but I am in great hopes that these few lines will better paint that picture:
The clock game started it all, back in 2009,
For I was just a young Muskie then, a freshman at the time.
I felt rage, anger, jealousy, and worst of all defeat,
In my mind, it was engrained inside, that Butler had to cheat.
The stopwatch, the air horns, and every flailing flop,
Betraying the game that I love, pulling out every stop.
Their place is a hole, a dungy cave, so much that one can’t joke it,
I take great pride that the water fountain is gone, for I am the one who broke it.
I will not squander another chance to zip them up this year,
Until Butler is in the BE basement and all that I can hear:
Uproarious cheers for Butler tears,
Brought to you by the Musketeers.
May the relentless, incessant hate of Butler University be forever strong,
Uncle Buck

I love it. I'm sure you will get a bunch of posters who want to prove something pop in here, but I'm with you. I hate Butler. For me it started the year before the clock debacle. Watching Matt Howard and Gordon Hayward get every freaking call on our home court was one of the most obnoxious memories I have of a Xavier game played at Cintas. That was one pathetically officiated game, and it annoyed me. But the clock game, well that just brought things to a whole new level.
I am going to be a difficult person to be around from about 4:30-6:30 on Saturday. We need a road win in a huge way. We need another quality win in a big way. But more than anything, I want to go into that disgusting shed they try and pass as a basketball gym and make their pathetic excuses for fans have to watch us have our way with them. I'm very nervous because I simply cannot handle a loss to Butler. I do not think they're a very good team but we all know how it goes. Let's drop them down to the bottom of the league where they rightfully belong!

There are Butler fans on the BUHoops board hoping that Blueitt gets slammed to the ground and they have a player ejected for it.
Yes its a messageboard...but that's kind of sad that you wish harm on an 18 year old kid for choosing a different college...whatever Hope Blueitt shows BU that he made the right decision (regardless of tomorrows outcome we WILL win more games in the next 4 years than Butler.)

If you guys pack Hinkle for the first time ever, you are going to want to be very careful. I don't know if that barn can structurally handle more hicks than it is used to without collapsing. I heard the last guy that tried to get a sip of water from the fountain there damn near lost his foot just from leaning on it, and he wasn't all that big. I think there are teams in the Big East where Stainbrook can find himself at a bit of a disadvantage against given his mobility. Butler is not one of those teams. I expect him to have one of his best Big East games on Saturday. I expect Kellen Dunham to take an obscene amount of awful shots, as he is one to do, and I'm hoping most of them don't go in. The last couple of times Dee guarded him I imagine he had to reevaluate his life afterwards, after going 4-20 for 13 points combined. That must've been difficult for a guy who loved nothing more than pretending that he's Kyrie Irving every game. Go ahead and chalk up your W if it makes you feel better. I'd probably have a lot more fun daydreaming than living in reality if my team had 5 Big East wins EVER too.
Chrabs. Gotta love that one. Sounds like the kind of STD one might get from being in a barn with Butler fans too long.

Ahhh...now this is a refreshing change!
FYI, did anyone watch the Butler/Providence game this week? I did. Ricky Roe and company had no answer for Henton and Dunn. Men amongst farm boys. Twice in the second half the refs had to stop the game for shot clock issues. Meet the new boss....same as the old boss.

If anyone wants a good laugh, go read the game thread for x vs bu on butler hoops. In fact I have a small example of the hilarity that is bu hoops.
"Yeah I am stuck in Cincy for the time being. Xavier fans don't like Butler, Dayton UC, The entire Big Ten, most of the SEC, or any other team that doesn't vip em' up with a bunch of "gangstas" who were booted from other programs. Yes they see us as a rival and although they take a fair share of potshots some on their board are predicting a Butler win. Saturday, they will complain about Butler fans being obnoxious, in between dropping multiple drunken F-Bombs every time the refs call anything on X. They will rip Hinkle and call it a dump, then go back to their campus in a ghetto and brag about their boring, antiseptic, uninspired, arena that looks like a warehouse from the exterior and a small market airport lobby on the inside. They are probably one of the most delusional fans bases around. Attending games at Hinkle is as close to a Final Four banner as they will ever get."

The Final Four jab is fair game, and frankly I would expect any self-respecting Butler fan to play their lone card. But a Butler fan ragging on our arena and campus? That's even dumber than claiming we hate the SEC! Seriously, where did that come from?

I seriously wouldn't trade a rocking, sell-out Cintas Center for any Big East arena.
Modern amenities, loud when the team is playing well, a golf shot away from my then freshman dorm room. There's nothing more I needed when I was a student.
Even the functioning water fountains at Hinkle Fieldhouse don't work properly:

The thing is that Final 4 jab is going to be more and more Daytonesque as the years pass and they fade into obscurity.
I love the way Butler plays. I love the way Indiana players know the game. I love our great players from the Hoosier state. I know I'm going to get flack from the "Amenities" crowd, but most all of the seats at Hinkle are between the baselines' ie you can see the game wherever you sit. Call me old fashioned but the point of going to a game is to see the game, not drink beer or wallow in plush seats. I love the rivalry, I'm pleased to play in the BE with Butler because of the basketball, could care less what their fans say, and very little about what posters are saying somewhere else. College basketball is the best sport, and two hours of Butler vs Xavier always worth witnessing, whatever the venue.
I don't need to get a mad-on to anticipate this game with pleasure.

I LOVE those frisbee catching dogs! Now those are some athletes! I just hate having to sit through so much basketball to get to them. Think they'd consider a 10 minute first half so we can get more frisbee dog time? The jump rope kids I can do without though... As for an Asian lady spinning bowls on a unicycle, well, I'll try a lot of things once.

This cracks me up. So many misrepresentations and hypocracy.
1. Who was booted from other programs?
2. We don't like B10 schools...SEC...since when?
3. They don't have local rivals in IU and Purdue?
4. Has he ever been in a ghetto? Seriously?
5. Our arena has to be one of the best in the league...if not, the best "on" campus.

I always kinda liked Butler and I still do, even after the clock fiasco. I DO wish their fans liked them a bit more and showed it by consistently attending their games by the 9,000's or more. I feel similarly about St. Louis, but believe they still have to prove something more to merit a spot in a future Big East alignment. VCU, on the other hand, is a program that I like and would love to see join the Big East when the time is right for expansion. And, finally, if Gonzaga is crazy enough to want membership in the Big East, I'd support that as well for the additional quality it would bring to the Conference.
If we are ever going to have a 12-member Big East, we might as well have the best two additions possible, even if the geography is a bit "off the map"!

Yeah Butler fans really just dont care about that program.
They've yet to eclipse 8,000 ONCE this year. On the other hand we've yet to dip below 9400 at any point.
They were also a ranked team for a lot of those games. It's embarssing that the fans dont support them. While I get they have a pro team it's not like the Pacers sell out every night (one of the worst NBA teams attendance wise)
Not sure what Butler can do to up attendance since clearly back to back final fours didnt do much at all.

We should just move our games back to Schmidt Fieldhouse. That place compares very favorably with Hinkle Fieldhouse. Both built about the same time, both smell like stale beer and popcorn, both have fewer bathrooms than they need. Hinkle is more of an airport hangar with the windows and light coming into the place, where Schmidt is a hole sunken in the Earth to house the dung Xavier basketball used to be.
If it is a dingy, drafty, old, bench filled, troth having, paint peeling, shit hole of an arena we need....then all we need to do is move our average fan base of 10,000 people into an old shit box built to house 3,000 people.
What a waste of $40 million dollars we spent on Cintas!! We could have just stayed in the Gardens or moved back to the Fieldhouse if we hoped to compete with Butler.

Take it easy there MH. Pacers are 13th in attendance. IU is the 1000 lb gorilla in Indy, after the Colts and Pacers. No matter what Butler does, most people, me excluded, live and die with the clown pants in Bloomington. Butler does border a nearby ghetto. They are kinda the DMZ between the haves and the have nots. One of their security cops was shot to death a few years ago. Plus almost no parking severely hinders going to Butler games...I wouldn't want to put up with the hassle.

Xavier is next to a bad neighborhood. Xavier has UC and UK to contend with. The parking isn't the best, at least for those who have to walk a few blocks. But we don't seem to have any attendance problems.

If you're going to count UK, which is an hour and a half away, then you might as well throw OSU into the ring too. Especially with their large enrollment, OSU fans and alum are all over Cincinnati.

Xavier has a huge parking areas...at Butler you're talking about a lot that parks maybe 500, or trying to find a spot in front of someone's house ( big hassle), and walking three or four blocks. Xavier's newest lot is great, it's roomy, it has security and it's only about 2 blocks away.

We used to sell out the Cincinnati Gardens, and some of the best parking that place had was a fir piece from the front door. That was 10,000 for a lot of games, in a bad hood, with a walk through gravel parking lots.

You just watch. Chrabs is going to neutralize Uber driver Stainbrook. Hinkle will be packed and Xavier sucks on the road. Put this one in the "W" column for the DAWGS.
The game is sold out, but I suspect (and hope) that is because 5,000 Xavier fans will be in attendance making it closer to a home game. Go X!

Xavier will be the only sell out game thus far for both its rivals (UC and Butler).
It wont be shocking when X fans make up 15%+ of the total crowd.
Also the parking comment is lame. THere are MAYBE 1000 spots at cintas or so but most people are parking elsewhere and not paying for a parking pass. The majority of those spots belong to students/faculty.

Parking at Cintas is a dream. It's free and you walk less than a 1/4 mile from just about every lot. You get out of the game and are on the highway in less than 5 minutes. I can't think of a much better scenario unless you chauffeured me to the game.

Agree. Try finding close parking at most other college events. Parking at LaSalle made you worried that your car would be in pieces when you came back. Temple charged you a nice fat $15 to park in their garage. At least UMass, Charlotte, Rhode Island and Fordham were free but you had to walk quite a way.

Speaking of parking, I'll be going to the game tomorrow, first time going to Hinkle, anyone have any parking advice? Is it really that bad or will I find somewhere to park easily? Thanks for any help.

I seriously considered Ubering from Cintas to my car parked by Listerman's when I left the Seton Hall game the other night because of the cold. But that's the only time I have ever been unhappy with parking at the Cintas.

We used to sell out the Cincinnati Gardens, and some of the best parking that place had was a fir piece from the front door. That was 10,000 for a lot of games, in a bad hood, with a walk through gravel parking lots in a foot of snow, uphill both ways.
We did it, and we liked it....
Thanks for the reminder grandpa.

Agreed. Cintas is about as easy and stress-free a parking situation as any sports arena I've ever been to. People who complain about Cintas parking must be comparing it to something other than other sporting events. I also found that parking at Villanova was very easy and painless (unlike the game that ensued.)

Hey P. Where do you park for Nova? On campus?

Parking at LaSalle made me worry I would be pieces walking from the lot to the 'arena'.

We parked in a lot (I believe it was free) that was about 200 yards or so from the arena. We got there about 30 minutes before the game and the lot had tons of spots left. Given that their arena is pretty small, I don't think they would have any issues with it filling up there.

Parking was fine and easy, game sucked, at least the end sucked. Bleachers sucked, I had no cushion on mine, boo.

Gotta give them credit for the subtle removal of the X. That's funny.
