CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte 49ers say men's basketball coach Alan Major will take an indefinite medical leave of absence.

It's the second time this year Major has left the program for medical reasons.

The school announced in a news release Tuesday that the 46-year-old Major approached athletic director Judy Rose to request the leave because of a return of health conditions. He had two eye surgeries and a heart procedure over the summer.

Major says in the release that "this is an extremely difficult basketball decision for me to make, but more importantly, it's a life and health decision."

The school says associate head coach Ryan Odom will assume interim head coaching duties and will be assisted by Desmond Oliver and Orlando Vandross.
