View Full Version : Black Unis Thoughts

Now that we wore them and they have been seen in person and on TV, does this need it's own thread? We wore new black unis. On TV I wasn't even sure they were black until a close up shot.

Regardless if you think we should have them, I thought they were pretty underwhelming and I actually like the grays better. Something I never thought I would say.

Something different for special occasions...fine by me. I'm guessing the players like them.

I can take the black unis a lot easier than those awful gray things. Fine for special occasions. It IS a bit of a mind twist when you are used to seeing the home whites, and instead the visitor is in the whites.

I didn't love them, but I do love winning big games in big fashion. I'm also a little superstitious, so.....

The black unis looks o.k., better than the grey ones, but not our traditional colors.

I really liked the black unis, they are definitely something to pull out for special occasions and not a regular basis. I wish the bookstore sold the authentic versions of these instead of the white ones.

I'm cool with black uniforms here and there but also a big fan of the Grey and think we should have it as an official third color to be able to use at home or on the road

Absolutely despise them. Along with the alternate grey unis. If you are going to have an alternate uniform, go with the secondary team color, which is blue. I would love a Royal blue alternative over the others. In a word, unoriginal.

Thought they were ok. I'd love to see the running man unis make an appearance (longer shorts of course) as the alternate jersey each year.

I thought they were pretty nice. A little change from the norm is nice and I bet the players love them.

I thought they looked good. Not in love with them, but a nice change. Lots of people don't get how much the players love uni changes. It's used in recruiting.

Also, Stanley loved them, so there's that:
@Sburrell34: Those XU Jerseys Last Night During The Georgetown Game Were The Nicest Jerseys I EVER Seen An XU Team Wearing.... MY GOODNESS!!! :-)

The unis themselves looked fine. I liked that the color was fairly matted and nothing busy.

But as an XU fan I can't support this, ever.

First, I was constantly getting confused with the home/away thing and kept thinking GU was XU. (Okay, maybe it's me, but I doubt I was the only one.)

Second, it's not the team colors. They can do lots with the blue/white/gray combos. Let's leave black to schools that used black...like UC Bearcats!

I thought the black looked good. I was surprised that I liked them but again, I have always been fine with the Grey too. People need to realize it's not 1960 anymore, teams are going to play around with uniforms and come up with different colors even if their are not the offical school colors. Even Notre Dame has experimented in recent years. I don't see XU turning into Oregon any time soon in the uniform department.

I am a much bigger fan of the gray unis. Those are badass!

Old associations die hard.
I've always associated black uniforms with the pussycats.
And always associated gray uniforms with Georgetown.

I had to look his shoes up on his instagram. They're a pair of Nike Kobe 9 lows. He IDed them and got them in all white. http://instagram.com/p/vSCOcPGSk8/

On another note, Stan Smiths are awesome shoes. I got a pair this year.

I have worn Stan smith's in the past. I think Chico wears nothing but Stan Smith's. I'm a little amazed that anyone under the age of 40 even knows what Stan Smith Adidas are, much less wears a pair.

All I can say is the black unis weren't designed by the same person who designed UD's logo.

They came back with a vengeance this year partially due to this man

I vehemently dislike them for the simple reason they are NOT our school colors.
And FTR, neither are the grays.
Xavier school colors are Royal Blue, White and Gold. (Yep, Gold)
That was the official (and still are) the school colors as stated by Father Finn, before anyone on this board was born.
Don't believe me? Go to the archives in the library and look it up.

Like having black in rotation of uniforms... Design could be tweaked a bit, but I like the idea of having a black in the mix- plus if it makes the players feel and play like they are bad asses (like they did against Georgetown) then no one should have a problem with them.

Quick, call Tom Eiser.

The official colors for the Xavier University Musketeers are Xavier Blue (PMS 289), Silver Metallic (877), Silver Gray (422), and White

Other than they're black (i.e.,"bad ass"); what's the point? Black isn't a school color so why use it? Uniforms imply of uniformity but look at the assortment of colors, different helmets, etc., that colleges trot out these days. Why worry about cost containment? Flash is in style and no expense should be spared.
Hell, let's include fireworks and flaming pots for pre-game intros...if the NBA can afford it why shouldn't colleges?

On second thought, just play the game and skip the marketing crap!

As long as they play like they did yesterday they can wear pink tutus.

But, since you are asking, I wouldn't mind if they never wore them again.

There is nothing wrong with marketing... That is a big part of recruiting. If the players like them and recruits like them then that is great. I personally like them but even if I didn't I wouldn't care either way as long as the players like them and they are winning.

So long as the scoreboard shows that Xavier won the game, the last thing I care about is what color uni the players were wearing while winning. School colors change. Growing up, we were all wearing blue that could probably have been seen from outer space it was so bright (especially compared to the blue now). Black is a neutral color. It goes with everything - especially winning!

They did it two years ago with the gray jerseys. They wore them at home and then kept using them at home for most of the season until they finally lost. I believe it started with a game vs. Temple in January and ended in late February when they lost to VCU.

Hey genius. You do realize that IF Xavier pays anything for the pregame pyrotechnics its a severely reduced price. Its called a corporate sponsorship. I'm sure there is a partnership with Rozzi(sp?)

Mack is clearly very superstitious, so I would fully expect us to wear the black unis on the road and keep wearing those badass grays at home until the streaks end.
