What did I miss, is Chris Mack out sick? I thought I recalled hearing they were expecting another child, is he out for that?
Your comment about Travis heading the team tomorrow night caght me off guard.

Yeah, Mack tweeted a picture of Christi at the hospital last night.

OK, my buddy has sent photos of him, his daughter and grandson sitting in some area above the basket (not the end with the big blue wall).
Looks like they are in some sort of club or something.
Nice counter in front of him to rest food and drink on.
Where is that?

That was an ugly half of basketball. Defense has got to get much better before Big EAST play begins. Lets dominate the second half and get ready for Missouri. Nice to see former XUgraduate assistant Ben Botts on the IUPUI bench as an assistant.

Ben Botts is on IPFW's coaching staff not IUPUI's.

I was happy for the win. Our bench strength wore the other team down, as has been the case.
Their issues today are the same they had yesterday. We learned nothing new. They seem to still be figuring it out.
I thought Myles had a couple nice shots. He played as much as Quick Draw Macura.
I'd like to see Abel get more shot attempts and force that issue until he learns to dominate, as I think he can.
It was nice that in the second half there was a chance to play the younger guys. There might not be as many chances moving forward.

Held IUPUI to 43 points, by far the lowest total of any opponent this season. Also, they only shot 1-14 from 3, again, by far the best 3pt fg% defense this year for Xavier.
I didn't get to catch the game, will watch it later, and I know IUPUI is horrible, but those are two good numbers for Xavier's defense.

The bad news - Xavier allowed 10 points en route to starting the game with a 10-3 deficit.
The good news - Xavier allowed 33 points in the final 36 minutes.

Not sure how much was due to XU, or the law of averages. Certainly a much better second half. The first half was... something I'll try to get out of my mind. Enjoy watching as you know it has to get better!

Remy played good minutes again. Like that, really efficient offensively. Pretty disappointing effort of the offensive end. I was screaming for them to get it down low in the first half, a lot of turnovers.
Not sure if the defensive was that much better, they missed a lot of wide open shots I thought.

That's what happened from my vantage point. They still got a ton of open looks from 3, they just didn't knock them down.

I was flipping back and forth to the Dayton game last night for my wife. Between our first half and the second half of Dayton vs. BGSU, I saw an entire awful basketball game. BGSU scored 2 points in the last 10 minutes and only lost by 4.

Same here. I thought another reason the scoring was lower was that IUPUI really took its time on offense, going 20-30 seconds usually before taking a shot. I'm pretty sure they knew they couldn't run with us, so they tried to slow it down as much as possible. To their credit, they did a pretty good job. They passed the ball well and got open looks. Just couldn't shoot from outside of 10 feet.

That's because IUPUI is bad, bad, bad. Even when they held a commanding 7-point lead over us in the opening minutes, I couldn't get over how terrible they were.
Now let's never speak of this game again.

IUPUI has the be the worst shooting team we've played in a long time. They missed a lot of open shots last night. I am glad we woke up offensively in the second half. I'm sure Mack was not pleased at halftime and I'm shocked that he didn't pull the starters 2 minutes into the game and put in 5 bench guys to send a message. It seems like our guards still let themselves get screened at the 3 point line far too often. That needs to change immediately and would eliminate some of the open shots teams get. Someone also needs to tell Dee that it's okay to throw the ball into the post once in a while. Our most effective offense is when we throw it into Stainbrook and he can either go 1 on 1 or find the open man if they double him. I've very concerned about Saturday. We cannot afford to lose either one of these road games. I'm just happy we played a really bad team last night and hope we got some poor things out of our system.

I should say not.
IUPUI is one of those teams that I expect to curbstomb. That's also probably why attendance was light last night - a 'pastry cart' opponent on a weeknight, in December which is typically a busy month for people.
The first half was pretty depressing. Particularly when we came out flat and got down by 7 in a hurry As the guy in front of me yelled "MAck - Put in some guys that actually want to play!"
We are just glad that IUPUI IS in fact dreadful, as we were able to weather whatever funk it is we were in the first half.
I'd say Mack must have lit a texas size bonfire under their collective butts during halftime, as they came out of that locke room inspired. Even with that the score did slip back within a 15 point margin a couiple times.
Very disconcerting, to perform that way at HOME. If we do this at Misssouri, it will be Misery.

The spread on this game was 25 points with Xavier winning by 23 substituting freely. I would say that the game went as predicted.

We came into the game averaging in the low to mid 80's in points and were playing a team who gave up 89 to Evansville in their last game and we scored 66. We also had out most turnovers in a game and were miserable in the first half.
This game did not go as predicted in an way other than the final score was close to the spread.

The first 10 or so minutes of the game was about as sloppy as I've seen a D1 game be played in a long time. X came out looking like they were treating the game like a glorified scrimmage.

18 to's with a ton of steals by IUPUI We didn't take care of the ball too well. I wouldn't say so but hopefully we build on it.

I saw that Xavier had 8 TOs with 10 minutes to go in the first half. So 10 for the last 30 minutes isn't SO bad.
At one point I think we had something like 6 TO's in 7 posessions. That's just amazing! It looked like giant middle school kids (except for Dee, of course).
I only got to see the last 10 minutes of the game but am going to watch the DVR tonight, even though it sounds like it was pretty ugly. I guess I can't answer this before watching, but I'm wondering if a more concerted effort on the defensive end caused them to tense up a little offensively. The turnover numbers are pretty bad and we scored way below our average against what I can't imagine is a great defensive team. I know that at least one player made mention that they were focused on holding IUPUI under 70 before the game. It's certainly not an excuse, but maybe they were a little too overly concerned with one side of the ball. If the defense looked nearly as comparatively good as the numbers suggest, I think it's an encouraging sign. We will get things rolling on both sides of the ball before too long I think, which means very good offense and at least high level effort on defense. I also think I like throwing in the occasional press with the depth we have. We will never be great until we are a better half court defensive team, but I think a little press can make a difference with this roster.

i just don't know if we can take much from this game. IUPUI is just an awful team, and the team was playing at home mid-week to what looked like a half empty arena on tv. They won by twenty against a crappy opponent, whatever. The next two games on the road should be a much better indicator of where this team is. Neither of the next two teams are very good, actually they are probably below average, but at least they are "name" teams and the games are on the road.
It's certainly not an excuse, but maybe they were a little too overly concerned with one side of the ball.
Unfortunately, they did not seem the least bit concerned about any part of the ball.... just throwing the damn thing everywhere...
Sounds like it may have been even uglier than I could've guessed. I suppose I'll find out tonight...

IUPUI is dreadful. The only positive I took from that game was that we did not lose it. Everything else must be viewed through the prism of IUPUI sucking about as bad as a D-1 school can suck. And we still struggled for 20+ mins.

I think our team isn't unlike a lot of teams. Do you think UK was fired up to play Columbia last night? Not an excuse...simply reality. The constant rehashing and gnawing over games where we win comfortably is annoying and we're only 9 games in. Yes, I want us to improve and get better as well. We'll know a lot more about this team after the next two road games.

Agreed. Obviously the fans weren't fired up for IUPUI considering the attendance..and the ones that were there I believe thought they were in church...not that I blame them..it is IUPUI. So, how can we expect 18-22 year old kids to be focused and fired up for games like this each and every time out? We won against a terrible opponent. That tells us nothing about our team good or bad..next team up.

This is amusing. Look at this thread. There were only about 30 posts about this game total, and it was pretty much a total stinker. Not according to me, but according to Chris Mack.

What are people supposed to do? Only post when we play our best possible basketball? I haven't seen that much irrational bullshitting here personally. Some people go overboard, but that's what you get on a forum full of die hard fans. Most people are citing legitimate concerns and making legitimate observations. If you take that as gnawing and constant rehashing then you may be too thin-skinned to endure a full season around here. Honestly, I would say it's a very small percentage of posters who are just over the top annoying on the sky is falling bit. And you can easily skip over their stuff anyway. Do you think it's annoying to point out that the IUPUI game was sloppy and point out what we need to do better? I thought that's what this board was for, when we aren't busy arguing about racial relations and burgers.
