Good showing from our guys. Quick thoughts from a very untrained eye:
I liked what I saw out of Austin and O'Mara. Larry definitely has a bit of the razzle-dazzle and made some very nice passes, along with some turnovers.
Randolph needs to learn how to pass the ball. Too many times taking the ball to the hoop for a contested shot when a guy was open.
Blueitt is the real deal. Going to be lots of fun watching that kid play.
Reynolds is a beast and is primed for an awesome year.
Defense is going to be an issue. At least early. Hopefully they figure it out by the time conference season rolls around.
The free throw shooting was REALLY encouraging. Especially after the last couple years.

I think some of you are underestimating the defense a bit. Yes, some of the freshman might struggle at points. As for the non-freshman, Im not worried about defense coming from Stain, Reynolds, Randolph, Dee, or Remy. Slight issue with Myles, and a concern from Farr.

I don't think anyone's underestimating it. Nobody's saying we'll be BAD defensively. They're just saying we'll be a work in progress early in the season. Seems pretty spot-on to me.

I agree with you. Although it's only one exhibition game, unlike some previous years, I didn't see any freshmen who left me thinking, "Why did they recruit him?". It's looks like all the freshmen can play.

it was fun to see the new team play against someone other than themselves even if the competition was not all that great. Just a couple of observations from me on a few of the new guys...Remy has one of the ugliest strokes I have ever seen, but if it goes in more times than not, then it doesn't matter. I am excited on what he is going to do for us this year. Blueitt..I can't really say anything outside of what has already been said about him. The guy is legit....not the most athletic guy in the world but seems to have a great feel for the game and his frame is impressive for a freshman. I know that at one time, he was considered a little um "fluffy" but that has disappeared. Lastly, O'Mara could be a great get for us. The guy seems to have a great motor, and I think he is going to be able to spare both Stain and Reynolds admirably.
I really like the look of this team. I'm sure it has happened recently, but I can't remember the last time that we had 4 legit 6-9 or 6-10 guys that are going to be able to contribute.
XU 87

O'Mara is a big guy. His legs look like tree trunks. Defensively, he's not going to get pushed under the basket.

Abell and Reynolds off the bench. That says a lot to me. Also good to see Myles Davis knock one down from 3. It looks like we have a couple of shooters on this team. Should be an interesting year. I am a little happier with the less challenging tournament now so these kids can grow together more, but there is real talent out there.
Muskie
11-10-2014, 09:49 AM
I had the most fun looking at the "information" on the roster. O'Mara and Stainbrook are apparently the same height, but according to the roster distributed, Stainbrook has 35 pounds on O'Mara. Not from what I saw.
Also Nothwood had a guy listed as 5'7 (under the Bobby Knight theory of lineup height, I suspect he was closer to 5'5). Kid was good though and apparently played decent at USC last season.
XU 87
11-10-2014, 10:13 AM
I thought Stainbrook was about two inches taller than O'Mara.
If it's the same guy, the 5'5" guy drove past our guys a lot. I thought the dribble penetration defense was spotty at times.
What did you guys think of Randolph? Much more aggressive than last year, but he didn't score.

I think Stain is marginally taller than O'Mara. Maybe an inch or so. I think the frosh's mobility is better.
Randolph does look more confident....he has to convert when given the opportunity.

Would much rather see over-confident Randolph than the unsure Randolph we saw 75% of last year.

Agreed. I imagine that an overconfident Randolph might be a bit like a younger Mark Lyons, where we deal with some frustration and aggressive mistakes, but also some playmaking and scoring. I would definitely take that over the timid play we saw many times last year.

I am assuming that our starting lineup for game one is going to look like this:
PG- Davis
SG- Remy
SF: Trevon
PF: Reynolds
C: Stainbrook
Has anyone heard anything to believe that that is not going to be the case? I am guessing that others in the regular rotation for a while will be Macura, O'Mara, Randolph, Farr, Myles D, and then either Larry or Sumner (depending if he gets healthy). I'm pretty surprised at this point that no one has been red-shirted...anyone else find that to be a little odd this close to the first real game?

Teams don't "declare" a red shirt at the beginning of the season, as they once did. If any of these players plays one minute of in season basketball, they are ineligible to red shirt. Coach Mack will wait and see, and if a player goes through the season without playing...he will redshirt. I know we look deep now, but strange things can happen that suddenly increase the need for our 12th or 13th player.
So no, I am not surprised in the least to hear we haven't decided to RS anyone. We may have had some discussions with some of our guys, but there is no need to make that decision right now.

Your starting lineup is what I was expecting to see on this past Saturday. I read somewhere that Reynolds was in the doghouse for an awful game in the scrimmage the week before. So that may explain why he didn't start. But I don't know about Randolph. Maybe he has been the top 2 guard in practice.

Can you really go thru an entire season, not play, and then declare a red shirt year? That doesn't seem right to me, but again I may be wrong.

This is mostly true, but generally there is a discussion with the player at the start of the season so that they understand why they are not playing. And sometimes it's even soft-released so that there is no public pressure on the kid. I expect to see London redshirt. And I think there's a reasonably good chance Sumner does as well, since he will essentially have missed the entire preseason at this point. (Word is that he may start practicing today.)

Substitute Myles Davis for Remy and I think you have it right. But I'm curious about the starting lineup for Saturday night's game. Were a few players in the doghouse? Was Chris rewarding Randolph and Farr for good weeks at practice? Was Chris testing out some guys/lineups? Inquiring minds want to know...

Yes. There is no paperwork filed with the NCAA. You have 5 years to play 4. If you don't set foot on the court, it doesn't count against your 4. The "redshirt" doesn't even have to be in the 1st year. It's just a year of not competing anywhere in that 5-year eligibility period.

The only thing I'm concerned about with Dee Davis is whether he leads the league in assists. With the offensive weapons this team has, his slow release is just about the last thing I'm worried about.

i think Dee is what he is at this point. He's fine, he's ok i guess. He isn't a dynamic playmaker, and i don't think he really makes anyone better. However, for right now, he is the best we have in terms of running the point. It is my opinion though that for this team to be "special" it is going to take either Randolph or one of the freshman to supplant him in the starting lineup...either that or the light finally turns on for Dee in his senior season, something that seems to happen during senior year for a lot of Xavier players in the past.

Not me. I want guards who can shoot threes. A team is at a disadvantage if it has a point guard who can't shoot threes real well playing thirty minutes per game. This is particularly true if the point guard doesn't/can't score in other ways.
Dee isn't a bad three shooter. He just needs a lot of room to get his shot off.

I agree with you- it seems he's the best point guard we have right now. I just think he's limited in what he can do and thought the same think after watching him play on Saturday. He's quick but not super quick. He's a good but not great ball handler. Good defender. Decent shooter but has a very slow shot and has had difficulties scoring in the lane. But when you're 5'9", you need to do some things great at this level.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if Dee was a knock-down shooter as well. That would be better. And I guess if you are looking for faults, his release is one of them. But I just don't think it's going to hurt us all that much. And I think you (and others) are underestimating the rest of what Dee brings to the table. Is he Tu Holloway or Drew Lavender? No. But he'll likely lead the Big East in APG while playing good on-ball defense. It could be a lot worse...
If Dee is taking care of the ball, dishing our assists, and playing his best defense, there is nobody on our roster who is going to surpass him as the starting PG this year. He does have his limitations, but he has the ability to be a pretty good point guard too, and has shown that. Consistency is going to be huge. He seemed to have a few good/really good games followed by a real head scratcher in years past, and I think some of that is attributable to match ups and the play of the guys around him, to be fair. But he's a senior now, and we will need him to be a fairly consistent point who mostly stays away from bad turnovers and makes good decisions. I am fairly bullish on his chances of doing so. Having good shooters around will help any true point guard.
