How many Mr. Basketball's does Xavier have lifetime?
I know Justin Cage was (Indiana), Redford will be (Michigan). Who else?

I wonder if AdamtheFlyer and Swampy Meadows read this yet? Their heads will certainly explode when they do since they both talked major shit about Redford even being in contention for the award.
Congrats Brad!!!

For some reason I was thinking Erik Edwards was Mr. Basketball for Delaware. I don't know if that is true or if I just made that up. I tried to google and didn't come up with anything.

wasn't Josh Duncan the POY for Ohio???
Here is an article.

Click on the big red "Mr. Redford".
Redford, who will play his college ball at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, will become only the second Mr. Basketball award winner in the past decade to commit to an out-of-state school.
The Michigan schools missed the mark with Redford, but who can blame him for wanting to play for one of the top coaches in the nation (Sean Miller) at a top-25 program?
I thought Alvin Brown was the Mr. Basketball from somewhere. I could be wrong.

The unforgettable Richie Sutherland was Mr. Basketball in West Virginia.

Here's a story on the Detroit Free Press site: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080310/SPORTS09/80310028. Big feature on the Free Press home page.
I believe Alvin Brown was the DC area player of the year, or something to that effect. Probably comparable, though it's a district and not a state.
Romain Sato and Tyrice Walker were both Ohio Mr. Basketball.

On a day when Xavier is recognized by the A10 coaches for coaching and individual player achievements--even though Stanley Burrell got royally screwed by not being named to the first team all-conference--Redford takes the top prize among Michigan's high school basketball players. Looks like the tradition will continue at Xavier. Congratulations to Brad and Sean who signed him.:):):)

Let's not get carried away. Stan has had an amazing year. And if you would have told me that he'd be DPOY by the time he was a senior, then I would have been shocked.

The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association would disagree: http://www.ohiobkcoaches.com/Awards/Mr_Basketball.html

The Mr. Basketball award is commonly awarded by the AP.

I'm sure the coaches list is a great one, but the AP award is the more well known.

DETROIT -- Frankenmuth senior Brad Redford edged out Saginaw High senior Draymond Green to win the 2008 Mr. Basketball Award Monday.
Redford earned 1,402 points, with Green earning 1,245 points.
Only members of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan are allowed to vote.
"(Green) called me Sunday night and offered his congratulations," Redford said. "We've known each other for a long time. I told him I was sorry. There were two good players, and only one won.
"Then we talked about the tournament and how we need to focus on the upcoming games and hopefully we both play Friday in the semifinals.
Redford the Eagles take on Menominee at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Houghton Lake in the Class B quarterfinals.
Redford averages more 37.1 points a game and has made a state-record 140 3-pointers.
He owns the state record with 102 consecutive free throws this season. The Xavier recruit also set the record for most points in a first quarter with 27 and owns the record for free-throw percentage in a season with 97.1 percent and in a career with 93.4 percent.
Redford can set a few more records if the Eagles continue to win.He has 929 points this season, 40 shy of Mark Brown's record of 969.
He is third in 3-point field goals in a career with 311, three behind Brad Gray and 29 behind Matt Kitchen.
"This is an awesome feeling, being mentioned with guys I grew up watching on TV," Redford said. "I was kind of a dark horse going in, but after the first couple of weeks I thought I would have a chance if I could keep it up.
"Fortunately, I was able to maintain that pace a little."
Paul Williams of Detroit Renaissance finished third with 547 points and Dominique Buckley of Romulus was fourth with 349 points.
Redford is the first player from Frankenmuth and the Tri-Valley Conference to earn the award and is also the first Xavier recruit to win Mr. Basketball.
He is the third player from Saginaw County to win Mr. Basketball, joining Mark Macon from Buena Vista in 1987 and Jason Richardson from Arthur Hill in 1999.
Green becomes the third Saginaw High player to finish second, joining Eugene Seals and Anthony Roberson. No Saginaw High player has won the award since it began in 1981."

Brad Redford Wins!! Even though, the UDpride board had been reporting that there was no way that Redford could beat out their beloved Paul Williams, Redford finished first with 1,402 points and Williams finished THIRD with 547 points. Sorry UD, you take the backseat again.

It's nice because Dayton fans get to see XU getting another Mr. Basketball -- their guy finished 3rd.

Funny that Paul Williams finished 3rd, considering that according to UD fans there was no way Redford was going to beat him out for the honors. I'm sure that they still think that Williams will be the best NCAA player by far. We'll just have to see how that shakes out...
Williams is a swell player and will give Dayton more athleticism, sorely lacking there recently.
Redford is a niche player, and will have to grow into the college game. But putting the ball in the basket is both a skill and an art, and I am quite pleased to see a guy like this rounding out a great recruiting class. It's not like he's Opie, if you have seen any of the tapes.
