Killed in a car accident with his girlfriend. I hate the Cardinals, but I hate this worse. A young man's life taken way too early.

Absolutely terrible news. Regardless of his potential, which was astronomical, the loss of a 22 year old is always tragic. May his family and the family of his girlfriend find peace.

Yeah. Terrible. Cards have had 3 guys die in about a 10 year period. Daryl Kile, then the offseason after their 1st WS title they lost a rookie pitcher, can't remember the name.
Now Tavares. Terrible

Not sure of the rookie pitcher, but the organization also lost Josh Hancock in 2006 as a result of a drunk driving accident. Tough stretch for the Cardinals. As much as I hate the team, I respect the product they put on the field. No fan base should have to endure this stretch of tragedies and I hope this is the last one for a long time.
Godspeed Oscar.

Holy crap this is awful. I just really hope that this was an accident and didn't have anything to do with drugs or alcohol.
And by all account, Oscar Tavares was a really good kid also. That just makes it even worse.

ESPN reporting that local officials are saying his blood alcohol level was five times the legal limit.

5x?!? Wouldn't that generally kill you by itself?

As the ER nurse on this board, not even close. But it should have made it difficult for him to even find the ignition I would think and start the car. I don't think I have ever been 3x over the legal limit and at that point I'm glad I make it from my door to my couch. I've seen guys close to .5 in regards to ethanol.

Five times in the DR. His BAC was .267 and the legal limit there is .05. So it was a little more than 3 times the limit in the US, which is still insanely high.
