Kaiser Gates announcing his decision at 3pm today, down to Texas Tech, UCF and Xavier. X is heavy favorite but TT has come strong of late
Seems to be coming after a visit to TTU. Not sure if that's good or bad.

Not to nitpick, but Larry Brown is at SMU.
And none of those schools were actively pursuing him. Just like there are lots of players who list Xavier offers that we wouldn't take a commitment from (i.e. Derrick Smits).

No kidding, I am sure at 6'8 he creates matchup problems on the wing in High School. Brings out a taller defender to the wing opening up the middle for O-rebounds. 6'8 and a shooter is still a matchup problem in college.

I like it. Lot of upside and a very natural and smooth offensive game. Another big guy who can play (read guard) multiple positions, shoot, handle and pass well... I'll take it. I also think he had a high upside on defense which would be crucial given that our current wings aren't lockdown defenders. We are going to be a really big, long and athletic team over the next few years.

I've seen Gates play a bit and while he is very skilled he reminds me a lot of James Farr. Not size-wise, but skill wise. That is to say I'm hopeful he can develop some ball handling skills and play the three because I don't like any plan that involves him playing the 4.

The class just above it has six new guys (one of whom will probably redshirt and join the 2015 class), and the 2015 class is also relatively weak. The 2016 class is definitely better, so they could use an extra scholarship to carry over to that class. The need for players is also much greater by 2016, whereas in 2015 the roster will be pretty crowded. I hope next summer they snag a 5th-year transfer in order to make use of the scholarship while still being able to save it for 2016.

According to the recruiting sites, Gates does have a good handle. His offensive upside seems very high, as he's got a good stroke, handle, and passing abilities. The one knock I've heard on him is that he loses focus at times, which is certainly a concern, but by all accounts he is much smoother an athlete than James Farr.

I agree. One of the things I look at in recruiting is how hard the local schools go after a kid, especially if he's a highly rated kid.
It doesn't appear that either Georgia or Georgia Tech went after him very hard. Why is that?

There are offers that show on a kids profile and there are offers that if he called the coach to commit he'd be accepted. He did not have the latter from Auburn or Georgia.
A perfect example is Derrick Smits. His profiles list a Xavier offer, but we all know we had stopped recruiting him.

Sometimes schools don't offer if they are clogged up at a position.
In any event, I think you have to trust your coaching staff who have scouted and interacted with the kid.

Way to poop on the Gates' parade, kid is tall with a good shot. He has a chance to develop into a quality player. He has a chance to not develop and transfer. We won't know until he gets on campus. The one thing I like about all of this is that you can't teach size and at 6'8 Gates has height. With a college weight room program should put on a few more #s and fill in nicely.
Evans is 6'5 which is nice for a college wing, however, in a tougher league like the BE 6'5 might cut it for a 2 but not the 3. I think it's obvious Mack is going for size and shooters right now. Austin is the only shorter guy so far and he is a legit 6'1 and can play.
As far as Scott, that kid grew it looks like. He has sites that still list him at 6'2. I didn't look at any video of him yet but he looks like a decent player. I just read that he also played his AAU at Atlanta Celtics but their site only lists Gates on there and not Scott. Where does he play AAU?
Also, finding it interest with Pitino's rant that the Celtics are Addidas and XU is a Nike school.

Scott was ranked in the same categories that Gates was ranked --- just significantly lower. And it seems you have selective reading comprehension since I completed my earlier post by saying "but some folks like strawberry better than spumoni." My intent in writing that was to indicate that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that what seems like a very good player (4-star) to one rating system may only be a good player (3-star) to another or vice versa.
In Top 247, both players were listed at 6'7" and 203 lbs and both were listed as being from Georgia. We, who live in Cincinnati should have little trouble comparing the two players over the years starting in 2015-16. So there is no real point in getting one's panties ruffled or in predicting doom or greatness for a recruit of the future.

I'm not going to rip on you. You've seen him play and I have not. But I will always contend that it is incredibly flawed logic to judge a player based on the schools on his final list. I can go through tons of Xavier players whose final lists included all schools well below us who turned out to be good players. I can also come up with tons of players who turned out to suck in college whose lists were full of excellent programs. It's just such a silly, narrow-minded way of viewing the situation, and no coach in his right mind would do it that way. Not saying you're making your judgement based solely on that, just noting that a lot of people do do that and it's ignorant.
The bottom line is, the coaching staff feels he fits a certain need/want. It's well known that Mack was going to be overly selective with the 2015 class, as 2016 is a much better class and we'll have more scholarships. A lot of recruiting gurus like his game and see something in him. Chris Mack clearly does. You're right about recruiting rankings not being anything close to an exact science, which is why coaches don't care about those kinds of things, and make their decisions based on their own scouting. Gates has a lot of tools to turn into a good player and we should not be disappointed that he's getting that shot at Xavier.

Maybe its b/c I'm getting older and have been posting on this site for over 5 years, but this kind of stuff is just getting ridiculous. Kid is 18 and hasn't even stepped foot on campus. Rarely do we recruit kids who can play and contribute immediately. Mack and staff see something in him. Lets trust they know what they're doing.....especially considering the class that's coming in this year.

Having an impressive list of schools recruiting you will move you up the recruiting rankings, but it won't make you a better player.
I don't believe David West was overwhelmed with offers from top schools, and that turned out OK.
I trust our coaches to evaluate talent. No one wins all the time, but their track record is pretty good.

Well, they haven't signed anyone else, and no matter what anyone else says, Xavier hasn't told Kip that they aren't.

I'm pretty certain Gates was the backup plan for Nichols. Whether Nichols knows it or not we've moved on.

No, no we haven't..at least not from what the family has been told. And Gates and Nichols play 2 different positions. Kip could never play the 4.
X is recruiting Funderburke from St. Ed's hard too. Important to keep building the relationship and not blow it by being crass. Mack and Eric Flannery continue to communicate.
Kip may not choose X, but it's not because "we've moved on".

I'm sure the coaches will still keep in contact with him to cover themselves if Gates were to decommit but Nichols had his chance and he didn't take it. They only wanted one of him or Gates and they got one so they're not taking a commitment from Nicholos anymore.

My understanding is we have moved on from Nichols. I agree we should keep good relations with St. Eds, but Nichols had his opportunity. My guess is the Eds coaches understand and thus they still have good relations with Mack.

Admittedly this is a stupid take...However, when I close my eyes (figuratively), I hear the name "Kaiser Gates", I hear Dan Hoards nasally voice calling that name on the radio. Conversely, when I hear the name of UC Freshman, Gary Clark, I head Joe's voice.
Stupid, I know - Just saying...

I don't think it's stupid. Whenever I hear "LeGarrett Blount" I imagine Al Michael's Kermit the Frog voice emphasizing and dragging the soft "a." I have no idea if I've ever even heard him say the name, but that's where my weird mind goes.

How Dan Hoard ever got any broadcasting job....and somehow keeps it is a mystery of the universe.
Guy. Is. Horrible.

I think he's great. Very well prepared. Doesn't trip, ever. Picks up on the important details without rambling about unnecessary things. Really a pro.

Totally disagree. I've never heard an announcer whine so much about how the team he is calling always gets shafted. His nasal delivery is also grating as hell. He always sounds like he's angry about something with no joy in calling the contest. One of the all time worst I've ever heard.
And before anyone says that I hate the guy because he calls SucKS games, Paul Keels called them before Hoard, and he is excellent..so much so he graduated to the OSU games.
Joe Sunderman, who has no formal announcing training, is so much more professional.

I would think the opposite, since Kaiser is a Top 150 guy. We seem to like that group lately.

Couldn't agree more. I know we are extremely lucky to have Joe and Byron especially when I hear hoard. Its painful to listen to him.

Did Nichols even commit yet? Sometimes its better to take the date to the dance that says yes then wait for the one that is looking for something better.

He hasn't and that is pretty much why X took the commitment from Gates rather than wait on Nichols.

Take rankings for whatever they are worth but these two aren't far apart. However, I am having issues even finding Nichols in the top 150 on Rivals.

Yeah, they are very close in rankings between the ratings sites. I don't think Rivals has Nichols in their top 150. I think he is just a 3 star guy, unranked. I think Snow prefers Nicholas but Broering prefers Gates (if that's too much info from the pay board let me know so I can edit it out). So it's a toss up on who is more likely to pan out.

Not only is Hoard bad.......I can't stand listening to Bengals games ever since Johansen left.....but pair him with old looney toon for SucKs basketball and it is beyond horrible. I would have to be at games if I were a kittens fan.

OH Jeez... don't even go down the road of Chuck Maycock or whatever his name is... I'm not a fan of Dan Hoard at all... but I'd take him any day over Chuck. I can't stand how he used to "talk" to Huggs during the game or yells/complains at referrees when they are obviously running by him or standing by the announcers table. Totally classless... the best thing to ever happen to that guy was to get thrown out of that tournament game.

Two good sources, I have access to both. I bet Gates is higher because of his height. It's one of the few things in basketball you just cannot teach or develop.
