Coconino National Forest covers 1.8M acres. Kaibab National Forest covers 1.6M acres, Prescott National Forest covers 1.2M acres, Tonto National Forest covers 2.8M acres, Apache National Forest Covers 2.8M acres as well. Tonto and Apache are more central than northern Arizona, but regardless there are a sh!t-ton of pine trees in Northern Arizona.

Just visited there for the first time in September. It is indeed beautiful. If you go, take a couple days to get into Utah and visit Bryce and Zion as well.

But if you do that, you MUST also get to Arches, Canyonlands, and Deadhorse Canyon (Thelma and Louise country), which all lie near Moab in SE Utah. Then drop down to the north rim of the Grand Canyon and while you're at it, go visit Canyon de Chelly in NE Arizona.

I have had the pleasure of visiting Nevada and Arizona both many times. Beautiful areas of the country. If you do get to Arizona, Sedona is a "must see" on your list. About a 2 hour drive north of Phoenix. Absolutely beautiful area and lots of things to see both in the town and on the great Jeep Tours.

I live in Phoenix and yes the State has a lot of trees. Visit the Grand Canyon which itself is forested on the both the North and South Rim. Flagstaff is at about 8000 feet and a favored place to visit and camp during the summer for us. NAU hasn't been that good since Howland was there.

Have you thought of telling him he can join you next time when the coverage is better? Yeah, I guess not....
We took a helicopter trip into the Grand Canyon while visiting Las Vegas. It was obscenely expensive, and worth every penny. You fly in and around the canyon then land for a little picnic at the top. There a video of that somewhere around here which I've never watched because I know it wouldn't do it justice (but I had to buy because it was so amazing). Standing on the edge doesn't really do justice to the majesty (but I wouldn't skip it if you had the chance!).

+1. The ride up to Sedona from Phoenix, via the northeast route through the mountains, is very nice as well. Beautiful area!
My son is being transferred to Phoenix next month, so I can see a trip out there for spring training in my future....:)

We just took the tribe cross country this summer (actually we flew to Denver then drove) and saw a lot of the national parks out there - Rocky Mountain, Arches, Bryce, G. Canyon, Mesa Verde. Also went to Sedona for a few days. Actually stayed near No. Arizona one night in Flagstaff. I would highly recommend it. The kids had a ball and the terrain out there is nothing like you've ever seen. Tell hubby you can get coverage in most areas but to suck it up nonetheless. You won't regret it.

My experience with Fox College Sports on DirecTV has been very C-.
There are three Fox College Sports channels (Atlantic, Pacific and Midwest (I Think). I'd say 95 percent of their programming are college football and basketball games that are on other FSN Networks. But, some of their programming is exclusive.
There are three Fox College Sports channels on DirecTV (608, 603 and one other. Or something like that). Logic would dictate that there would be an Atlantic, Pacific and Midwest channel. But, there's not. Sometimes two of the channels are showing Atlantic and none are showing the Midwest. Sometimes All three are showing the same things. Sometimes all three channels are showing all three networks. Some days 608 is showing Atlantic. The next day it's showing Pacific.
So....I don't know. Hopefully it's on and DirecTV customers can see it.

Yep, and it won't even let me try to record it in case that is the right channel. DirectTV tends to move things around anyway. I'll be returning from New Orleans around game time and don't want to miss it. I did find it on AT&T Uverse on channel 647 so I think I'm ok. Ah, the benefits of spending way too much on TV for my sports addiction!

X bars in Chicago:
Merkle's on Clark near Wrigley.
Then there's a "Dog" place on Lincoln up near Wilson. I watched the UC Brawl there with an Alumni group.
Bad Dog Saloon?

So....I DO think I might be pushing it a bit to suggest Merkle's for Xavier/SFA for our only night together in Chicago.

Suggest you try Merkle's (perhaps eat somewhere else if you want more than bar food) - it's definitely the Xavier bar and it's very cool to see a few Xavier things hanging on the walls. Plus they should put the game on for you with sound. The other place (I think also owned by Merkle's) was used when a pub crawl conflicted with a Crosstown shootout. Safe travels.

Xavier is -15.5 for tonight's game. I have no idea what to expect.....I doubt Vegas knows much about either team as well. Early season college basketball is usually a good time to make some money while Vegas is catching up and learning about the teams. Unfortunately, since there are so many question marks with all the newcomers for X, I think I'll pass.

I would like to think Xavier should cover, but much like Vegas, I can't say I know all that much about this team yet either. I've seen less than half of them play after all. I do love taking early season action in college basketball though, when I do know a little about the teams. This is truly the point in the year where your guess is about as good as the handicappers in a lot of matchups, and that will change soon.

Loved the view with Bourbonman from our new seats in Section 107. Wow, should have moved down there years ago.
By far, THE most impressive group of freshmen I've ever seen at Xavier. The athleticism is off the charts good. Mack went 11 deep on his bench and there was very little fall off. As this team gets more experience, it will be tough to handle. They have a low post game, slashers to the hoop and great spot up three point shooters. They can make a living off of transition points off turnovers and rebounds. No. AZ was certainly no match for X tonight. At times, they resembled an intramural team. But, that had as much to do with Xavier's defense as No AZ lack of talent. There will be bumps in the road and some tough times as this team grows, but the ceiling it very high as are my feelings at the moment about this team.
What does that all mean? Did you win some money? How much?

Bet 33 to win 30 and was a big winner.

Free throw shooting was a little better as the game wore on - ultimately Xavier finished 14-19 (including a combined 9-9 between Bluiett and Davis).
Long Beach State should be a stiffer test on Tuesday night - they're beginning a non-con schedule that looks like the Group of Death (SFA, San Diego State, Texas, St. John's, Syracuse, Louisville).

Trevon Bluiett is the Jesus Shuttlesworth of Victory Parkway.
It appears that an offseason has done Brandon Randolph much good. I am a fan.
Saw some promising defense to offense transition basketball.
Five fouls in six minutes for O'Mara. The Legend of the Quiet Man begins.

Blueitt made it look easy. JP Macura has the full faith and credit of the United Snipe's Government. He has a future at Xavier University.
Our question is going to be at Point
I agree that point is going to be the big question especially against tougher teams. The ability of our big men to pass the ball is going to help the situation a lot though. We don't need as much one on one play from the point this year.

Seems to me, Randolph started off last year doing real well handling the ball, but after league play started he fell off quite a bit. Might want to use some caution there. But I also think there will be a lot more options for him to pass to this year, compared to last year. It will be interesting to see how some of the newcomers adapt to better competition and the need for consistency. However, since so many of them carried high scoring averages in HS, I think they might do well in the consistency department. They certainly don't seem afraid to shoot the ball.
If X can have TWO CONSISTANT OUTSIDE threats on the floor at one time, it will certainly open up the inside for passes from the point guard. The problem that X has had the last few years is the lack of the SECOND outside threat, on a consistent basis. Dee, Randolph, or Austin....none of them has to be a scorer. IF X can get an outside threat from the other guard and one forward, at the SAME time, they can be almost exclusively passers.....because we know that Stain can score down low with the best of them.
This could be a really fun year....IF they can develop TWO consistent outside threats to compliment Stain down low.

Loved the comments by Stainbrook in the press conference after the game.

Mack has to love having a guy like Stainbrook who has the mentality of a coach. Also Trevon comes off as really polished in the Presser. Not many Freshman can carry themselves like he did.
The highlights are fun to watch. Love seeing that Myles was 3-3 from the Arc.

Can't wait to see more! Let's Go X!!!!
So I had a prior engagement I couldn't get out of last night, and was planning on having my dad find the game and DVR it so I could watch there at some point over the weekend. Problem is, the only DVR he's got is a DirecTV one, and he couldn't get the game on that. He was able to find it on Verizon so he got to watch, but couldn't record. Needless to say, I'm pretty pissed off that I don't have a way of watching, after waiting what seemed like an eternity to see our new guys. Sounds like we looked good (I know, hard to take too much away from Game 1) and I don't think it's too early to say that Trevon Bluiett will be the greatest basketball player of all time. Thanks for posting the highlights, X-Fan.

There were times last night Dee was looking for his shot. There is no need for him to do that.
I agree with those that say pg is our biggest positional concern this year. Shooting should be Dee's last choice (not because he's got a bad shot, but we just shouldn't new him to score). I'm still not sold on Randolph. And Larry Austin is a freshman - how little he played last night in a blowout is a pretty good indicator of where he's at.
If those three can limit turnovers and play defense we can be darn good.
We don't need Peyton Manning out of our pgs - all we need is Alex Smith.

Dee was playing hurt with the rib issues, and had a hamstring during the Brazil trip, so he really hasn't spent much time with the new guys. When he's 100%, I expect we will see the play we're used to. Randolph really came back from a poor performance in the Northwood game, driving into the lane and dishing the way Mack wants. Austin will learn quickly, and seems like a pass first pg. Then, a lot of people think the best PG hasn't even played yet. Wealth of riches, methinks.

As long as that doesn't include dribbling around among the trees inside the paint with the bad results that usually generates. I would be very happy if he led the BE in assists.
Boy I sure liked Blueitt. He looked like the real deal.

I certainly hope NOT.
I hope we see a pg that controls the ball, gets his teammates into position, hits the open man with a good pass, doesn't turn the ball over, hits a high percentage of free throws, and is a lock down defender without fouling. I don't care if he scores more than 6 points a game.

He was second in BE assists last year. Terrible. Ball control? 1.9 To's a game. Offensive efficiency? 108.2. FT's? 85%. Defense? He usually guards the opponents best guy.

He also had 62 turnovers vs 37 steals, and only shot 40% from field and 37% beyond the arc. My point was the pg on this team needs to be a pass first, shoot second, don't turn the ball over position on THIS team. They don't need a pg that turns the ball over out on the outside or takes long 3 pointers that miss....those things result in run outs by the other team. Stats don't always tell the whole story either, seems to me that there were several times where his passing was less than accurate, resulting in a TO by another player that wasn't charged to him, but to the player that last touched the ball.

My take from the game...
Bluiett was very impressive on the offensive end. His defense was fine but just out of position at times. That's to be expected until he has more experience.
I think Farr has more knowledge of the system and is more consistent and that is why he is getting the nod. Reynolds comes in at the first time out.
JP played very very well. Was impressed that he was not rattled at all in the press. Didn't turn the ball over and made intelligent passes. Had a nice drive to the basket and shot well from the outside.
With JP, Bluiett, Myles Davis and even Farr out on the floor, Xavier should always have at least two outside shooters on the floor at the same time. that should open up the inside game.
Not sure why the hate for Dee, thought he played very good. He was pass first and shoot second.
Was amazed when Upshaw got hot. No defense was going to stop him.

Dante and Kenny deserved most of it. Dee will probably deserve it, too.
Burrell forgot how to shoot, but he certainly found a way to still be a very, very good player.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a squad this year.
Hell. Yes. We. Do.
I am giddy right now. Giddy. Easily the best squad in years. I know the talent was subpar, but they were fast, long, tough, aggressive, and they could shoot.
This is gonna be fun.

I'm really not trying to be a hater on Dee. I don't wish to be like towards any player. If I came across that way, I am sorry.
But, I for one, was NOT happy with his overall play last year. I will admit to that. With the additions this year I will be disappointed (and surprised) if his level of play does not go up. Last year, a lot of people complained that he was not enough of an outside threat and was out of control at times....leading to other teams packing it in on defense and waiting on his passes, which led to turnovers. A BIG cause of this was the lack of consistent outside shooting by OTHER players. I think that X will have the other players needed to open up the opposing defense, and they will be able to carry the offense.
So....if Dee does not have a better season this year, then it will mean that the other players are not producing like we think they can. X wil struggle on offense like it did so many times last year. That is why I say I hope we don't see Dee playing like he did last year. I hope that plays better. Not that he was terrible...I never said he was....but that I think he has the potential to be so much better this year than he was, and to be so much more productive.

Dee is who Dee is. He isn't going to magically become a first team Big East player. The best we can hope for is a guy who handles the ball well, gets the team in the right spots offensively and plays good D. Expecting more than that is foolish.

I thought the game went well. It concerns me with how they struggled with the press. I know many are inexperienced but even Dee seemed to struggle with it. With as talented and as fast as these guys are, this should not be a problem. I hope Mack starts to address this immediately or every team is going to press us.

You will simply not win an argument like this with some posters here. Using logic and facts just seems to make little or no effect when folks have their minds made up to distrust players' abilities.

Dee also had 149 assists last year. A point guard is generally graded on his assist to turnover ratio. a 2-1 A-TO ratio is considered very good. Dee's was 2.4-1 which usually is considered in the VERY GOOD category. Furthermore most of his turnovers were not the result of someone stealing the ball from him. I would guess (because they do not list such stats specifically) that his 38 steals + many other TO's he caused opponent players (like taking charges, causing double dribbles, and forcing bad passes) greatly mitigated those 62 TO's he had last season.
Dee will never have us forgetting Drew Lavender, Anthony Hicks, Jamal Walker, or even Michael Hawkins. But he has been, and will continue to be a very valuable player for Xavier, especially in a year when we have so many Freshmen who need a steady veteran hand to help them reach their potential.

I'm trying to figure out why my suggestion that Dee not dribble into the paint amongst the giants with no clear plan, or outlet pass...somehow translates into Dee Davis hate. When he does have TO's, it seems like that's where they occur. Just an opinion.
Just don't get it.

I do worry that Dee might make some "three pointer rain" fall onto that city skyline on the court. I don't want anyone to slip and fall. I wouldn't mind if it washed the skyline away.
