View Full Version : Jameis Winston - What To Do?

I just read that Jimbo Fisher says a miscommunication among staff is why Winston showed up for pre-game warmups in his pads. Fisher asked the star QB to go back to the locker room, remove his pads and come back onto the field without them. All of which left me scratching my head and asking myself, what was he doing even being in the stadium that night?
I can't determine if is shouldn't give a crap or be outraged. Anyone care to opine and assist me on how I should feel or if I should even care?

I think he deserved the suspension, but him dressing for warm-ups was kind of a made up ESPN controversy IMO. FSU probably would have been better served by having Jameis watch the game from his dorm, but I don't think it's a big deal either way.

Outraged? What can this possibly mean to you in the grand scheme of things?
I'd go with "shouldn't give a crap"

I think about the kid's rape allegation, shoplifting charge and this most recent indiscretion and wonder if it was an FSU lineman, would he get the same treatment? Also with all that the NFL is going through does sort of sloughing it off send a message that this kind of consistent behavior will be dealt with softly.

Unless you have some sort of direct dealing's with Florida State's football team, I would go with not giving a crap.

If he's a lineman, you'd never know what treatment he got.

Great point. And I completely agree with you KK. But should we almost certainly assume that the big dude that protects Jameis during the game would be watching from a couch or bar somewhere or even given the boot? Heck Fisher was set to suspend Jameis for half the game until the school "stepped up" and said it would be the full game.

I am an OSU fan, but not an OSU apologist. But, last year Carlos Hyde was suspended for three games for an encounter with a young lady at a local bar. Facts and security tapes supported Hyde (mostly), but the suspension stood at three games. Look at X with Dez, Tu, Mark and Landon.

I don't think Winston would have been suspended at all had it not been for his previous run-ins.
As I understand it, this whole thing started out with a fake Youtube video where it appeared someone ran behind a reporter during the local news and yelled.....that. What ended up happening, for whatever reason, was that at Florida State's campus kids started yelling that in public, and were then challenging or daring others to do it, much like the ice bucket challenge. Thank God it quickly ran its course, but that's what prompted Winston to yell that.
He shouldn't have done it, but in the grand scheme of things I didn't think it was THAT big of a deal. As far as I know no other students got in any trouble whatsoever. It was just some stupid college thing.

His "latest indiscretion" deserved nothing more than a few extra stairs at the end of practice. He was a college student doing a dumb college thing (acting out an internet meme) that caused injury to no one. I get the argument that it is a makeup call for his other bad acts, but if that is the case it is way too little way too late.
Also i thought suspended players were normally on the sideline for games? I know that whenever X suspends a player they are normally in street clothes at the end of the bench (one exception I can think of is that Justin Cage was once forced to go to his Wednesday night lab class instead of the game, but I could be misremembering that)

Agreed. But he had the previous run-ins, and he is still in the middle of an investigation for sexual assault, and he did this in the middle of all the NFL drama. Suspension earned through serious stupidity.

Which may have led to all of the game day suiting up confusion. He was originally going to be playing in the second half, so he would have been "suspended" but in full pads.
I do not like the current trend of changing punishments in response to public reaction.

I find all that interesting.
FSU knows they have a nationally televised game and with all this terrible, poorly handled stuff going on. I simply can't believe they are so totally inept that someone failed to remind this chowder head that he wasn't playing.
He should not have been allowed anywhere near that stadium Saturday night. Why? I wouldn't have allowed him near it because of this one infraction, but I damn well would have made him sit in his dorm room given the investigation, his propensity for free crab legs and now this. Of course, he would probably have ordered takeout pizza and attempted to rip-off the delivery man.

I completely agree with this. Decide on a fair punishment and stick to your guns unless new facts come up. Just don't try to skate by with a slap on the wrist the first time and see how it goes over - I think this is how they get into that trap. "Hmm, what's the least we can do? We really need him." Same thing from the Ravens.

.
I guess it depends what is normal for a "suspended" starter. Is it just the coach benching him, or is he not on the roster for the week? Was it an official or an informal discipline?
If you look at Xavier, there have been times historically where a guy is dressed and on the bench, and it turns out that he's on some sort of internal punishment and he's not getting any PT for a game. I think dressed and on the sidelines things is a complete non-issue. I also think a full game is way too harsh of a punishment for yelling something. The argument that it's a make-up for something else is horrible too. If you want to punish the guy for something else, do it.

It seems in this case that college football is attempting to prepare its best players for the full NFL experience, including how to address legal issues and poor personal choices.

It was probably safer to have the kid in the stadium where they could keep an eye on him. Who knows what trouble he could have found in the dorm?

He should know to get some kind of waiver signed this time. Yes, I here do give you permission .... And so on... Could help down the road.

It makes me uneasy but it appears the alternative is to let the kids do whatever they want so long as the team is able to sweep it under the rug.

Unless the punishment is actually for yelling something vulgar and pointless while you are already being investigated for illegal activities. Then a full game sounds closer to right. The half game absolutely sounded like: this guy needs to be punished but we need him too much to bench him for a full game so he gets a partial pass.

More often than not, if a player is suspended by the team and not the NCAA, they're on the bench or sidelines during the game, especially if it's a home game.
Personally, I think if you're suspended, you should have to watch from the stands. I think it hammers it home a little bit more.
Having said that, I really don't care how Florida State, or anyone else, chooses to run their shop.

So, now there's this news. FSU is either, tone-deaf, ignorant, arrogant, incompetent, carefree or some combination of these. Crab legs? Really?

What is vulgar and pointless? Isn't all profanity in that category? Are college athletes not supposed to say "f**k" or are they just not supposed to stand on a table while they do it? Is it the "in the p**sy" part that makes this a suspension? What exactly is the rule here that draws a one game suspension in your mind? How many people need to witness it. What if it has a point? How do you apply this rule for profanity in the game. If someone is caught on TV clearly saying "f**k" should they be ejected, suspended for the next game. What?

If Winston didn't have his past legal troubles, I doubt he'd be suspended for the Clemson game.

I disagree 100%. I think the factor in play is the fact that he's a Heisman winning quarterback. Do you think a tennis player with the exact same background would have been suspended for a match for yelling in the student center? All the stories indicate that this is a rampant "meme" on FSU's campus, and that Winston is the only one to have been punished for it. Am I to believe that none of the other guys have any legal history?
edit: I guess I don't disagree 100%. I think you are probably right that the punishment was also influenced by his past.

Whether he should have been suspended or not, if you are any of the following...
- the Heisman Trophy winner,
- the QB on the #1 team in the nation
- part of a sexual assault investigation that many people are very critical of how it was/is handled
- the person who talked about women like they are bonuses, objects, etc to high school QBs in a "mentoring" camp of some sort
...you probably should not yell that while standing on a table, to a large group of people. (I'm not even mentioning the stealing of crab legs which is funny but not that significant)
For the person who ESPN is saying is the true leader and motivator of the entire FSU football team, he seems like a total idiot.
