There's no doubt about it, the Big East is a mess except for one sport: football.
So why not keep the Big East as it is now for football and allow the schools to form other conferences for other sports (like basketball).
Of course, some conferences work across sport lines (like the Ivy League, Big Ten, Pac Ten, SEC). These conferences can stay as they are. But allow other schools to form more geographically natural conferences.
Right now, does it make sense for X to be in the A10 for sports outside of basketball and volleyball. I don't think so. Creating a new conference which makes geographic sense could create more natural rivalries (like between the X and UC swim teams).
