I was listening to Ken Broo on 700 this morning and caught the tail end of a conversation on the topic an all Ohio team tournament including Ohio State, Xavier, UC, Dayton and why this classic would be a great idea. The guy on the air was from an Ohio State sports website called Eleven Warriors and made some great points, I was surprised that he (being an Ohio State fan) wanted this to happen. I am just curious on what everyone else thinks about the possibility of having an Ohio classic? And would Ohio State really agree to join?

It is very unlikely we see anything like that happen in our lifetime. The powers that be in Columbus will not let it happen.

"Cincinnati and Xavier used to be in the same conference, and now they play once a year. While these teams do still meet every year, there's no reason why they couldn't play again; Ohio State and Michigan usually play twice per year. Although recent games have been blowouts in each direction, they always generate excitement and the potential for another rivalry game would be fun for the city of Cincinnati."
How could a supposedly reputable college basketball person/publication make such a statement as the above in red?

I would thoroughly enjoy an All-Ohio tournament. It's not happening though

Always thought a tip-off tourney of X, UC, Dayton, and Miami would be a great way to start the season.......however, I never thought it would ever be a possibility. I think the same thing about the proposal put forth on Broo's show. Would be great....never gonna happen.

The rules for an exempt tournament are that all the games have to be played in a twelve day period, and all the teams must be in a different conference. That's it. You don't have to even bracket the teams. You could just play a round robin tournament at campus sites. A lot of teams are doing that now. They just collectively schedule each other so they can technically call it an exempt tournament and get a few extra games on the schedule.
Xavier, Cincinnati, Dayton, Ohio State, Wright State/Cleveland State, Ohio U (and half the teams in the MAC) are all in different conferences.
I'd like Ohio State to be a part of it, but if they don't want to be, then we could still do it. All we need are five teams from five different conferences who all collectively schedule each other within a twelve day period. It would be four games that count as an exempt tournament, and we'd be allowed to play 31 total games (not counting the conference tournament).
We should be doing this every year. In the years we want to be in other tournaments, then great! There is no rule that says you can't be in more than one exempt event. It's just that one of the tournament won't count as exempt. In other words, if we play four games as part of the Wooden Tradition, it will count as four games, not one, if we're in two exempt events. So, this doesn't even keep us from playing in other exempt tournaments.
It won't happen, but there is no good reason not to do it.

Good info. I'm not around the programs or area enough to have any good info but if it ever happened, that would be a tough little tournament with good competition, with or without Ohio St. I've always thought southern Ohio had about a half-dozen good, respectable college basketball programs.

THE Ohio State would rather be hit by Cruise Missiles before they play anyone good from Ohio- unless they are forced to in the NCAA.
Will........NOT.......Happen.

Then play it without them.
Like I said, I would like for Ohio State to be a part of it, but if they choose not to be then we could still have an all Ohio (or for that matter, all Southern Ohio) exempt tournament every year. What's stopping the rest of the schools from doing that??
What's funny is that the majority of Ohio State fans seem to actually want to play the other Ohio teams. It's just the administration that doesn't seem to want to.

It will happen in the Big Ten / Big East challenge. I will wager an adult beverage we will see X match up with the buckeyes before the contract ends.
Other than that, I don't see any way OSU would have interest in an all Ohio tournament.

Indiana, Purdue, Butler and Notre Dame play a "Classic" every year. It is not a tournament since IU and Purdue cannot play each other OOC, so ND and Butler usually switch off playing Purdue and Indiana.

The Big Five in Philly also a Round Robin every year.
The Ohio Tournament could be like that, only it could also be considered exempt because unlike the Big Five, we could get five teams from five different conferences.
It can be done. It almost certainly won't be done, but there is no good reason not to do it. Even if Ohio State didn't want to play, we could still do it.

The Big Four Classic in Indy pitting Louisville and Kentucky against ND and Indiana on a rotating basis was most excellent. It was too bad when that died.

Agreed. If I'm not mistaken (which I may be because I was pretty young), it tipped off the season.

Louisville, Kentucky, Murray (or EKU, or Morehead), WKU and NKU could be an exempt tournament. Louisville and Kentucky would want all the games at home except when they played each other, but it could still happen, and it would allow everyone to get a few extra games on the schedule.

I'm fairly certain Murray State has NEVER played Kentucky. Ever.
Confirmed via Murray State media guide. Hard to believe.

That's almost impossible to believe. I never would have guessed that or known that. How is it that they've NEVER played?? Even NKU has played Kentucky, and they've only been div1 for two years.
