SMU will still be very good, but they are losing an NBA caliber player.

While I realize this is about getting paid and making money, I suspect he would have learned much more from Larry Brown than playing one year in Europe.

I mean he's more than just an NBA caliber player...I think he ended up #2 overall in rankings. Likely a top 10 pick in 15 draft.

Probably so. A smattering of young players have opted to play in Europe instead, and I think all of them have struggled. I don't follow it closely enough to say for sure, but that's the impression I'm under.

The ESPN article mentions that this may not really be about money, but rather NCAA issues. I tend to think that's probably the case. I get that his family is probably very poor. But that's not uncommon in the NCAA. And the path to NBA riches is almost exclusively via college for US players. He may get a good $$$ deal playing overseas, but it won't be great $$$ and it will probably tie him up (and hence out of the NBA) for several years.

Really? I haven't heard this, but I guess I haven't paid much attention to it. The only one I can think of that recently did this was Brandon Jennings and it turned out fine for him. Honestly, I am surprised that more of the top 10ish high school players don't opt to do this instead of what many of them perceive as wasting a year in college. However, what you alluded to is maybe the reason why.

You're probably right, but I initially read it as "he would have earned much more from Larry Brown" and that was funnier. And maybe even true? Nah, nobody would do that in college basketball...

Brandon Jennings had some struggles, but he got paid pretty well (looks like about $3.5 million with endorsements) and only was there one year.

The two most popular examples are Jennings are Jeremy Tyler. Jennings has been covered pretty well in this thread and the other so no need to go there.

Tyler wasn't nearly as successful as Jennings (he was drafted in the 2nd round of 2011 and is currently with the Knicks), but his situation was a little different. He not only went overseas instead of college he skipped his last year of high school to do so.

Yeah Jennings got paid more in one year than he did his first couple in the NBA....
