So in a weird twist, Octavius Ellis will both contribute to the brawl and play in the first game back on campus without playing in either "Crosstown Hugout".

The "branding " change is that it will now be called the "Crosstown Wipeout" since the Borecats will abjectly SucK and we have Top 10 recruiting classes. :lmao:

I feel like this finally brings some closure to what happened in December 2012. It doesn't help the guys (Mark and Tu) that had their reputation smeared in the national press, but I think it's a big deal for Xavier moving forward. I can't wait for next season and this game in particular.

XUFan09

The time of year it will be played (mid-February) is what Mick wanted. I wonder if Mack also wanted that, or if that was what Xavier conceded to get the home-and-home format. I like having a non-conference game in the middle of the conference schedule, but I imagine it's tough when you're playing 18 conference games.

GoMuskies
05-12-2014, 03:12 PM
Given the disaster the AAC is becoming (notwithstanding the fact that they will have the defending national champs among their ranks), I think a tough non-conference game in February is a great idea for UC. I just hope that Xavier is able to live up to that billing.

Looks like YTG is following in his guru's footsteps when it comes to recruiting. Back to the old JC's. Plus his big 5 star recruit from last year apparently wants to leave.

"The signing this week of former UC forward Octavius Ellis from Trinity Valley (Tex.) College and point guard Farad Cobb from Northwest Florida State College along with the earlier signing of center Coreontae DeBerry from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College gives UC three junior college players on the 2014-15 roster, all of whom are being counted on to make an immediate impact.

Factor in the addition of Jamaree Strickland, a 6-foot-10, 270-pound center who was forced to sit out last year because the NCAA did not accept all of his high school courses, plus incoming freshman forwards Gary Clark and Quadri Moore, and the Bearcats will be loaded with newcomers on the front line. They'll join returning starter Shaquille Thomas, UC's leading returning scorer at 6.8 points per game.

The status of 6-foot-9 sophomore forward Jermaine Lawrence, who played in 24 games last year as a freshman, was undetermined as of Friday amid internet reports that Lawrence will ask for his release. UC coach Mick Cronin said he had not heard from Lawrence and could not confirm that he had asked for his release. Lawrence could not be reached."

Yep, that AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAC is really pulling in the recruits. #BottomOfBarrelScrape

He does have the entire next season to find a reason not to go to Cintas again. Any number of things could happen: Someone could finally steal his Lucky Charms and he would be out of a job; he could be out that day having an emergency dental procedure to whiten his teeth; or Murray State could call and demand that their Garden Gnome be returned.

Mine is 12/14. Lots of good and not so good bday shootout memories. And some both - met my wife 12/14/2001 when X got thumped by 20 at home (DFW got hurt but it would not have made a difference - we just didn't have it that night). Took her to the New Years Eve game against Kyle Korver and 4 other dudes about a year later. DFW banks the winner coming right towards us (got some student tix). It was love at first dunk.
Glad some sanity has been restored. Now let's go get a W at 53 gym then continue the dominance at the hoops mecca aka The 'Tas!

Honestly, I have no problem with that. I want everyone across the nation to realize what an intense rivalry it is. It's one or the best rivalries in sports, the fight is something that adds to that. It's back on campus so that is a positive as well. Show the fight, let's get this rivalry to be recognized.

I am not worried about how many times they show the brawl from a few years ago. Cooler heads have prevailed and this rivalry will be on campuses for another 10 years. So they can show it on a 24 hour loop, and it will do nothing to hurt our reputation or affect where this game is played.

If you expect that footage to simply disappear and to never see ANY clips of that epic cheap shot by Nancy Gates, you are setting yourself up for major disappointment, frustration, and outrage. I expect to see footage of that game (a game which we won) each and every time we have a crosstown shootout.

Guess what? I won't be disappointed.

Kudos to both ADs for getting this done. And then there's Mick talking out of both sides of his big yapper: (from The Enquirer article)

UC coach Mick Cronin has been outspoken about his desire to keep the game on a neutral court while XU coach Chris Mack has preferred the game to be played on campus but Cronin said he now supports the move back to campus. Neither coach attended the news conference, but Cronin said in a text message that he wanted to thank U.S. Bank Arena for hosting the game the past two years.

"As far as where we play any game, it is my opinion that we should do what is best for our program and our fans," Cronin said. "Season ticket holders and students are our biggest supporters and playing on campus is clearly in the best interest of both parties. Therefore, I believe we owe them to try to play on campus.

"I do have many concerns about fan behavior and basic decorum in this rivalry. I have and will continue to voice them to our administrators. I believe we have to be honest about the severity of some stuff that has gone on and eventually permeates to the teams. To me, this is more important than where the game is played. That said, I am in support of the move to campus and thank my administration for the time they have dedicated to getting this game back on track."

It won't be the first time that Xavier fans and students hear the accusations about bad behavior from UC coaches. We know the game will be moved off campus again should another major incident occur.

But I'm sure our fans and students will respond just as they did back in 2004 when Huggins and his UC team made their triumphant return. Huggins at least had some fun with how Xavier responded; I wouldn't count on the Gnome acting in such a manner.

Everyone is talking about the fan behavior. I just don't see it.

I haven't lived in Cincinnati since 2008, but in the nine years I did live there I think I went to every Shootout, home and away, but one of them. I never saw anything that was that over the top. Some of my best friends are UC fans. We worked together, I went to some of their football and basketball games, and they came to some of the Xavier games. Everyone knew I was from X, and no one every bothered me. Same with them.

It's not like Louisville and Kentucky where you have 100+ arrests down on Bourbon Street at the Final Four, and several people getting arrested before the game started this year.

West Virginia's student section got to the point to where they put a fence around it at the football games. The WVU v Pitt rivalry was way more ridiculous than the Shootout ever was.

I've never seen ANYTHING over the top as far as the fans go in regards to the Shootout. I think there was a huge brawl at the Woods one year, but that's it. XU and UC fans hang out together, work together, date each other, even marry each other. It's a rivalry, but I don't think it's nearly as heated as some of the others. There were more fights at the UC v West Virginia football games that I went to than there ever were at any of the Shootouts. In fact, I don't think I ever saw one at the Shootout, at either place. So, when they routinely talk about how abusive and how out of the control the fans are, I don't know what the hell they're talking about.

Granted, I haven't been in about seven years, but I don't think it's any worse now.

I went to one Shootout at the Shoe when I was at X. My buddy's father was the AD at Duquesne at the time and he got us some good seats. Well, they were good in terms of watching the game...but they were also right in front of the student section. My buddy and I were on our best behavior. We got screamed at, cussed at, threatened. I got my X hat stolen during the game...someone ripped it right off my head and then they threw it around the student section. We cheered hard for X but didn't yell, cuss, act poorly. Then, the students started throwing cans of beer at us. One can whipped over our heads and hit this HUGE dude about 8 rows in front of us. He came stalking up the stairs and started threatening my buddy and me and accused us of throwing the beer. Luckily, the adult UC fans sitting with us came to our defense and told him that we were acting fine and that the people throwing the beer cans were "our idiot students." The guy walked away. The adult fans apologized to us multiple times and told us they appreciated our behavior.

How did this experience affect me? I just chose to not go back to the Shoe to watch the game. Did I want the series to end? Did I wish it went to a neutral court? Of course not...that's stupid. I just decided I'd watch Shootout games at the Shoe on tv.

You have to feel sorry for Mick Cronin. I believe he is the first person in human history who's boss made a decision that he didn't like.

I know it is almost impossible to imagine, but Heaven forbid if any of you are ever in the unfathomable situation to where your boss and your boss's boss disagree with what you want done, then make the smart decision. Rip up your contract, and storm out of the room.

please reference december 7th and december 11th on st. John's schedule.

Butler, for the record doesn't have a bad of a loss as the dangerous red storm.

This is why i hate conference arguments. You can't have it both ways. St. John's lost to two common a-10 bottom feeders this season. But the a-10 sucks. Again. And believe me it does suck. But xavier doesn't suck in it. It goes to elite eights and at worst sweet sixteens. And has players drafted in the first round of the nba draft.

But st. John's is dangerous. Why? Because austin freeman and chris "the real" wright couldn't hit water one night.

I mean we've beaten be schools. Good ones, bad ones, schools named uc. Who cares? Butler went to the championship game playing in a directional school conference, but i'm supposed to be impressed that you are in the be? In that time you've beaten gtown once. Congrats. Get yourself a backpack.

Good luck tomorrow night. You've got the weakest xavier team in about a decade coming in. I know it's our super bowl and for the 14 fans that seem to show up to your games it's no big deal.

Unless of course you got another connor barwin at your school. Man talk about an emasculated dork. They would kick our ass in football if we had a football team? Wow good one connie. Did you get that at the awesome diss store? Right after you bought yourself the tightest t-shirt at baby gap?

Anyway. A-10 sucks. St. John's is dangerous. Uc plays in the be, which they never win and no one goes to see.

Ho hum.

It wooks wike, wittle Connie got a boo-boo on his ankle and couldn't pway this year.

I had to look that shit up because the only time I ever heard of Connor Barwin was when he he gave the world's worst halftime speech.

I wonder if Connie made a halftime speech at that game saying if UC had a gymnastics team they would kick Florida's ass.

Makes a bout as much sense.

I'm still laughing at the thought of the two epic battles between St. John's and UC in deciding who will finish 9th in the BE.

It's too bad I have to work the day of the first match-up. I'll have to record it.

The funny part about this is that I sat two rows behind Dan And Hep Cronin and there were not two bigger d-bags in the arena that day. I saw Dan pick three fights that day. He had to be held back after the game by a cop as he went after a Xavier fan. Mick doesn't want Dan and Hep to go back to Cintas because if they act like that again little Mick will lose his job. I know for a fact that the way they acted that day had a lot to do with pushing the game to USBank arena.

No, no. No, no. Ask any UC message board poster and you'll learn that your first hand eye witness account is all wrong. You see, what happened that day is that the Cronin's and all UC fans present that day were perfectly behaved. They sat quietly and sipped on tea and respectfully supported their team while giving Xavier credit for winning the game. Afterward, the Xavier fans poured blue paint all over them and raped their women and children. Please don't post fallacies and claim to have been an eye witness.
