When did they start charging for media guides?
As far as I know they have always charged for media guides. However, they have also always sent complimentary copies out to some people. I am uncertain if they send them to all season ticket holders or only to those who pay seat licenses. I assume they will continue that practice.

been several years. There are still the free programs at the games.

Premium 1 ticket holders used to get them for free, but it has been a few years since they sent them out. They began offering them to the general public at the book store during the exhibition game, and first game or two recently. They sell for like $25.
Don't know when the free ones stopped, but it has been a few years.

I'm pretty sure that they stopped the free ones after the 2009-2010 season.

Club Seat holders still get 'em.

I'll pay my fee as a seat holder with Muskie.
Gotta have it.

They are being sold along with your season ticket plan for $15 a copy. I have mine ordered when I renewed my seats last week. The same advertisement said they stopped the free copy to club and prem I accounts.

I am a club seat holder (from the beginning) and have always gotten a copy free, but this year an option showed up on my ticket renewal asking if I wanted to buy one for $15. No indication that I would get one for free, so I bought one. I will not be happy if they then send out free copies to other club seat holders. I am supposing that they are charging everyone now, with a $5 discount for season ticket holders.
To answer the initial question - they charge for them because they can.

I received a copy of the media guide in the mail for the 2013-2014 season. I did not purchase it. (I am a Premium 1 fan.) I did not yet receive the mailer regarding ticket renewal. I assume, based on olsingledigit's response, that I'll have to pay $15 for one this year. I guess that $4,000,000 TV money hasn't stretched very far!

Oh, that is just so petty. Over the years, Xavier was giving "free" football and basketball media guides since 1960 (when I started it) to all members of the Musketeer Club. The Musketeer Club supplemented the SID budget $500. so we could keep up with the Jones' as media guides were also becoming recruiting tools. As time went by the production costs climbed and climbed, color was the key increase, and the books also became like table top history books of the sport. The NCAA even stepped in a few years back and put some kind of a cap on what a school could spend (I really don't know what).
Xavier's John Eiser who has been Xavier's SID/Ass't AD forever now, does a really great job with the media Guide and overall with Xu basketball.
He's number one in that field.

As a fellow club seat holder I have always received a free copy as well. Maybe my initial question should have been a bit more specific. I received an email addressed to "Xavier Season Ticket Member" that indicated I could order a Media Guide at a reduced price. Anyone know if maybe their mailing list wasn't sufficiently parsed to exclude those who have in the past benefited from a free copy?

John? Or Tom? I don't know John, but Tom is certainly among the best in his field, and has been for quite some time.

I don't believe there will be a free copy anymore.

If they do, I will buy yours for $5.

As a Premium 1 ticket holder, I too have always received a "free" media guide since Cintas opened. Guess I am cool! :-)

Not urge what you mean that is petty? Even though I have to pay for one now, I can understand that their costs are going up and so it is one way to help control the cost, I.e. By charging for them. It also lets them know who really wants/uses them or not.
