Ronnie Johnson made a visit to XU today. With what we have currently and incoming for 2014 where would he fit in for 2015?

Or at least in the mix as Dee's replacement with Sumner and Randolph, PG's who will also be on the roster when Johnson becomes eligible in 2015.

I saw him visiting, looking around Commons and what not, he seemed relatively interested, if it works and he wants a home here good for him, if not, we will have viable replacements recruiting wise.

I wasn't even really talking about what has transpired on the court...referring to what seems to be some inner turmoil within the program in MANY ways. I think, without a doubt, that turmoil has caused some of the "momentum loss" on the court as well. So, "it will all work out in the end" doesn't really fit anymore.

And yes......the play in game did suck.
Being in the play in game sucked as well.
The only good thing that came out of that game is we added another tourney appearance to make it now 24.

I need more info... did he eat any ice cream in the Cafeteria? Popcorn? Were you able to determine by his stride if he jumps off one or two feet? If he jumps off only one.... which one? Does the foot he jumps off of, match his dominant hand? Maybe you observed him jumping? If so, how high? Would you say he's tall? If he is, does he slouch, thereby negating his height? I just want to know what the criticisms will be going in....

Seems the right foot is about 1/3 of an inch longer which may lead to some terrible hip flexor injuries down the road, food wise "Boss Man" in the cafeteria hooked him up with his own personal triple stack burger, with extra cheese. Confident strut to his step, could probably be streaky with that fact there.

I wouldn't exactly be excited if Ronnie decides to transfer here. He's a decent player and i'm sure he's a pleasant human being, but the dude can't shoot. He had plenty of opportunity on some bad Purdue teams, and his numbers don't suggest that his last two years are worth the extra year of scholarship.

X will have plenty of players than can shoot. He averaged almost 11 points last year in the Big Ten. He was 9th in the Big Ten in assists per game and 5th in assist percentage. I'm not saying he will be a stud but he would obviously be a more than capable point guard for this team, especially since Randolph and Sumner aren't true point guards and haven't shown that they are capable of handling the position.

Sorry, but I still don't get why we're going after another player when we are at the limit of scholarships for next year. I'm perfectly ok with players transferring because they have conferred with the coaches and find that they're not likely to get the minutes or role they want, etc.. If a player or players on the current roster are planning to leave, why haven't they declared so by now to give themselves more options?
From what I see now, I wonder if X has lost a sense of loyalty to players who committed to be here and have worked hard to succeed on and off the court. Loyalty has to go both ways. It feels too much like professional athletics. I have liked the idea of student-athletes who have a sense of being part of the university community. Yes, yes I know it may not be that way other places, but I have enjoyed over the years that there was more of a feeling of family connected to Xavier basketball.

Don't get me wrong, he is very versatile, a good shooter from the 3 (42%) but I just think a defensive liability is the last thing we need currently, we have a lot of unknown pieces next year, such as Abell, yes we've heard he's a defensive lock down, but nothing is proven until we get on the court, our Freshman have to be big, etc. Would he contribute next year? I think he would, I think he would average near his 17 a game, but I hated watching him blow defensive assignments to an easy three, or someone drive past him, it was slightly frustrating, and if teams started keying in on his defense, it could become a long game to watch.

Do you realize that the report for why Semaj didn't come back was because Mack wouldn't force Dee Davis out? Supposedly Semaj was interested in coming back but wanted Dee out so that he could be the PG. Apparently Mack would not force Davis, a soon-to-be senior, to leave. While it might not be the best move as far as basketball goes, it does show a sense of loyalty to a player that seems to want to be at X.

This works both ways. Play the best players! Are we to believe Semaj has a good chance to play PG in the NBA, but he's not better than Dee at playing PG? Does anyone think Dee has an NBA career ahead? What was the best course of action there? We have some shooting/scoring help coming in (we hope). Seeing Semaj take minutes from Dee wouldn't have hurt my feelings. Was there a compromise that could have been made? (Yes, I have a lot of questions, and few answers.)

Supposedly Mack told Semaj he could compete for the starting PG job. My guess is he would have won it. But it seems like he wanted it handed to him. Maybe he was afraid he wouldn't be out Dee...which wouldn't be a good mindset for a kid leaving early. I actually give Mack a lot of credit (word is that he had a "heart to heart" with Dee about his off-court behavior - behaviour for our Canadian friends - and Dee has vowed to be committed to doing what is needed). In this instance, it's Semaj that chose to leave, then think about coming back. If any loyalty was shown, it was by Mack to a kid that will be a senior. Coach could have told him he was out as the PG or just told him he needed to transfer. He didn't. He actually made a tough decision that a lot of us, myself included, probably wouldn't have made.

I guess I admire the loyalty, but I have to wonder about the decision. If Semaj needed Dee to transfer, then that's just crazy. I think I'd have enjoyed 25 +/- minutes of Semaj at PG with some time at SG, or some similar compromise.

I like Dee and appreciate what hes done as a muskie like I do for all muskie players, but I wouldnt have been upset for even a second had he gotten no more than 15 minutes a game next yr. He is not a BE starting quality player. He would be a very solid off the bench role player but he really plays more than he should in the big east imo

I like this about Mack, a lot, if this is true about him refusing to hand Semaj the starting point guard position. If Semaj wanted this to happen, it is indeed time for Semaj to move on.

This is good to hear. I don't want anybody getting any position 'handed to them'. Basketball is a team sport. If somebody wants to showcase their individual skills at the expense of the team then I am fine with them leaving, regardless of how good they are. You compete for your position, and you do what is best for the team. Semaj should be a better PG than Dee, but Dee can't play the 2 so the best thing for the team may be Semaj at the 2. The last thing I want a bunch of talented Freshmen seeing is the star of the team playing the PG spot because he issued an ultimatum to the coaching staff.

I heard the same story and assuming it true, then clearly Mack did the right thing. No coach should allow a player to dictate where he plays rather than earning it in practice. This is particularly true when the player makes the request for his own development rather than for the team.

Seems like most of us are pretty split on the whole Ronnie Johnson thing. I honestly haven't seen him play, but it seems like a safety net kind of situation to me. You know what you're going to get from him at this point.
Let's say Mack doesn't go after him. What happens if Brandon Randolph never turns the corner? What does he do if Edmund Sumner turns out to be more of a Mark Lyons kinda combo guard, as opposed to a natural 1? I feel like he'd rather have a somewhat proven guy coming in that needing an impact freshmen or immediately eligible transfer in 2015.

He would definitely be a better player at the point than Dee, but is the team overall better off with Semaj at the 1 or the 2? The coaching staff seemed to feel that they were better off with Semaj at the 2 and Dee playing the point and they weren't going to let the players dictate their positions. I'm fine with that. Just like I'm fine with Justin (and his attitude) playing elsewhere.

We would be much better with Semaj at PG next year. It's easy to point at the "right thing to do".......but who's going to be upset next year if dont meet expectations? I can answer that with a resounding....ALL OF US. I also dont have an issue with Semaj saying he wanted the PG job (if this story is actually true). His future in the NBA is only at PG. Why wouldnt he want that?

How do you know that??? We wouldn't have been this year or last. The question isn't whether Semaj is better than Dee (I think we can all agree he is). The question is whether the TEAM is better off having Dee on the floor or Semaj's replacement at the 2. That answer gets more difficult to answer next year, but since Semaj's replacement at the 2 (whoever it is) almost certainly hasn't played a game at X yet, it's asking a hell of a lot to expect Mack to answer it now.

We have lots of options at the 2 next year. M Davis, Abell, Bluiett
Addtionally, Semaj is a PG. Period end of story.
Back to the crux of the issue.......having Semaj here in any capactiy is certainly a hell of a lot better than not having him. I expect the coach to work through these kind of issues and find a way to make it work.

I agree. In addition, it is absolutely wrong for a coach to let a player dictate the position he will play. Semaj could have "won" that position in practice if the team would be demonstrably better with him at the PG spot (with Dee on the bench) along side another player at SG. And if that happened, Semaj could have stayed and played PG. But as you say, it is not at all clear that the team benefits from this. And Semaj's request was ostensibly about prepping him for the NBA rather than what was best for the team next season.

Not to discredit the story, because I don't think it's made up of whole cloth, but I cannot imagine a scenario where Semaj wanted to come back and Chris wouldn't make it work. Seems more likely to me that Semaj discussed with Chris what the plan was for next year and it didn't jibe with what his advisors told him was necessary to raise his stock. I don't know Semaj personally but by reputation he is not a diva or a selfish kid, I can't imagine it was a "him or me" ultimatum.
Also I think it's really unfair to imply that Semaj isn't a high work ethic or team oriented guy because he has chosen to enter the draft and work rigorously to improve his stock. Blame the NCAA and/or the NBA for setting up negative incentives to these kids. Acting like Semaj returning to Xavier would have polluted the incoming class with me-firstism is a bit much.

I was more referring to Justin in that regard, but if the Semaj thing went down as rumored (which I agree sounds a little fishy) then I wouldn't want him around the Freshman players.

I also agree with your take on this. But the bottom line is that Chris had to let Semaj know that to be the team's PG next season, it would have to work for the team. Hence no guarantees.

I absolutely don't believe this "rumor". If Semaj wanted to play more PG, I bet there could have been some shifting of the lineups during the game so he could get more PG experience? Doesn't add up on that level to me.

You mean Semaj didn't "earn" the starting PG job based on his performance the last two years?
Not sure what some of you are watching?
Sorry, but I watched a Xavier team where Semaj wasn't the starting PG for two years. Dee Davis was, with Christon playing the 2. That was part of his concern. He wanted the starting PG spot and didn't want to return to play SG, as it wouldn't necessarily benefit his draft stock. I think Mack did exactly what he needed to do, tell Semaj he could compete for the spot with Dee. Do I think he would have won that spot? Absolutely. But I can't argue with a coach telling a kid he would compete for a starting job at a "new" position.

By no means am I implying that. In fact, if Semaj didn't feel he would get most, if not all, of his minutes at PG then I don't blame him for not returning. I think he heard that one of the concerns is his ability to run a team as the PG and returning would have provided the opportunity to show that...assuming he was the PG. However, if playing SG was going to be best for the team and that's where he might ultimately land again, it wasn't going to help his stock. I don't think that's the bad type of "me first" attitude. It's just making a decision based on the facts in front of you and, when deciding your future, it's automatically a decision based on you. I don't think he's ready for the NBA, but I also don't think another year at the 2 would necessarily benefit him either.

I think the popular sentiment is that Dee isn't a good PG and that somehow Semaj was a master at moving the ball.
Dee led the team in assists and is a very good defender. I'm not certain Semaj would have necessarily unseated him as PG. I think it was more likely there would be a sharing of minutes.

Yeah I think Dee can have a big year. People forget that Lionel Chalmers was awesome at Xavier for exactly half a season. People were ready to run him off the team the first half of his senior year. Hopefully Dee has a similar jump that changes our whole perception of him once he is gone.

Chalmers averaged 12 ppg both his sophomore and junior years. Dee's best ppg was 2012-13 season, when averaged 8.2 ppg. Chalmers' 3 point shooting also improved every year. While I hope Dee has a big jump next year, unless he can learn to shoot better (and quicker), and learn how to hit the runner in the lane, I wouldn't count on it.

People do definitely seem to forget that, which plays into the idea that people seem to remember players mostly for how they finished, with a few exceptions. However, Chalmers and Dee are much different kinds of players. The upside for Chalmers in terms of being able to explode as a scorer and take over the way he did is something Dee doesn't have. But he can definitely be a great floor general and overall player. Chalmers went from being hated by some fans to quite possibly the hottest player in the country. He's a unique circumstance.

Yeah I'm not saying Dee can be as good as Chalmers or has the same ability or skills, just using Chalmers as an example of a player fans loved to hate until literally the second half of his senior season and he is now looked at as one of the Xavier greats.
Heck fans on here get on guys and give up on them after just their freshman year now! I guess that comes because of getting better, more hyped recruits? I never like to say never in thinking a player can develop and make a good jump from one year to the next because we have seen it with so many former Xavier's, but it is easy to forget.

That's what I was hoping for when he was recruited. Lyons took off though and SC didn't wind up playing point. I actually thought Randolph would be a real physical presence at pg with him looking more like a football defensive back. I'm still not counting Randolph out or Sumner for that matter. Come tournament time the teams with good point guard play advance. The national championship game showcased that. X got exposed in Dayton with terrible pg play. If Dee s going to drive and kick more like we want he will need more upper body strength to pass the ball out to the wings fast enough. Dee has seemed to at least try to get stronger though.

I don't know where the first quote came from, but there has been nothing stated by the parties themselves of any financial settlement, nor would anyone. That alone would be contrary to the confidential terms of the agreement. The second excerpt was from an Associated Press story that the Enquirer reprinted. What you quote in the first quote is merely speculation by a reporter as to a financial settlement with Wells. There is none.
There are terms of an agreement, as there always is in a settlement. Bottom line. This was a bad lawsuit by a publicity seeking lawyer with a spotty track record that was counterproductive to both parties and it was better it disappeared.

In this U.S. District Court, any time you tell the court that you've settled, they automatically dismiss the case with an order that essentially says "If final settlement is not reached within 60 days then either party can re-open the case". So if the settlement falls apart for some reason due to a misunderstanding over a key point or an argument over settlement language etc, you can proceed with the case by "re-opening" it.

Bino as a Head Coach would be an abject disaster. My nephew, who played at Marist when Bino was an assistant there under Matt Brady told me straight out that Bino was not a basketball technician, but basically a "glad hand recruiter." He barely was even ever at practices, but was mostly in Baltimore recruiting. Bino was also the guy who sold the Xavier staff on Jordan Latham, who wound up having a less than average career.
No, Coppin. No.

Ranson was at James Madison when Latham initially committed to Xavier.

True. But Ranson had a pre-existing relationship with Latham. I guess that CMack brought him in to ensure that Latham came, and Ranson didn't dissuade.
I'll admit when I am mistaken, D&V, and I obviously "misremembered" about Latham, but my nephew wasn't kidding about Bino's lack of X and O knowledge.

I've never heard of anyone giving up XavierHoops for Lent. Sounds sacrilegious.
I've done it for the past few years. Not sure it does much, but I don't eat chocolate, so...

I don't eat chocolate either.... that makes it perfect for me! Lent comes and goes and I am none the worse. I may not be the best Catholic on this board...

MOR, I didn't mean that as a shot at you. But the fact is that Sean (with Chris on board) recruited the hell out of Jordan Latham and then XU redoubled their efforts after Miller left. Latham was a disaster but it wasn't just Xavier's staff that was fooled - the kid had offers from Marquette and a couple of Big Ten and ACC schools. I do not think that Bino was hired specifically to keep him in the fold - and I think Bino's record recruiting to Maryland is pretty good - but I do not contest your familial assessment of the dude's coaching ability one iota.

I obviously can't confirm why Ranson was hired, and maybe there's a timeline, D&V, but after the Raccoon left and took Parrom with him, the Ransom hire would sure seem to have been to have a Baltimore guy, who had a good contact on the kid, keep a Baltimore Kid from de-committing. Bino was only here one year too, and his wife never moved from Baltimore, so it looks like a one shot deal.

Consider me Michael Wilbond.
He's a guard going to play for Kelvin Sampson, so chances are he ends up at Xavier at some point down the road anyway.

Sounds like a good fit with Sampson.
