Five members of the Westboro Baptist Church showed up at UMass on Wednesday, holding their typical array of hateful, anti-gay signs and sparking a counter-protest from more than 1,500 students.

Ridiculous. I love the students held a counter-protest. I love it when god loving bible thumpers feel the need to judge another human being.
The God I grew to know and love was a forgiving spirit, who often kept company with sinners, whores, and lepers. If he came to Earth now, I am confident he would take in the gay people along with all those persecuted by others.
Let's hope these protests end soon and remain peaceful. Let the kid go on with his merry life.
Being hateful is a bad plan.

Did the Westboro Church signs say that "God hates UMass"?

I hope people continue to mount counter-protests against them. On at least one occasion it forced them to end early because they were so outnumbered.

I used to wonder in this day and age why a gay person would be afraid of letting people know their status. I guess this shows an example of how life can suck when they do.

Bible thumpers are the worst. God I can't stand them.

And yet, I dont care.
Why do we feel such a need to cram social issues down everyone's throats at every single opportunity?
Has anyone ever considered that maybe sports were "invented" as a way to GET AWAY from whats going on in real life.
I prefer to watch players do what they do best and leave it at that. I dont fucking care about who they want to date or what kind of pizza they like. I'm just trying to watch the fucking game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The protests are wrong, but the Pope is a failure in his leadership role if he can't rightly express the word of truth.
Homosexuality is a sin. It's his responsibility as the head of a church to make that clear.

Homosexuality is not a sin. It is the role of a true leader to admit when mistakes have been made.

And yet Jesus would surround himself with sinners. You should do the same.

The Westboro people aren't Bible thumpers. They're just nuts.
At least Fred Phelps is dead. The sooner the rest join him in hell the better.

I guess the difference is that scripture supports one statement and not the other. Pretty sure that stating homosexuality is not sin is new territory. KK might have truly broken new ground for mankind.
Or he's actually God.

Doesn't the Bible also say people should be put to death for any number of things that today are generally no big deal? If you're going to use it in support of one position, then it must be used for all.

Misunderstood, mistranslated scripture supports it.
"There is little said in the bible about homosexuality because it was no big deal! It occupied a prominent and respected position in most Greek and Roman cities at all levels of society and among a substantial part of the population. There are only 4 scriptures that are taken to say anything about homosexuality; the Leviticus laws, I Cor 6:9, Romans 1:26-27, and the story of Sodom and Gomorrah - and none address loving, consenting homosexual acts as we know them today.
There are over 600 individual "laws" in the Levitical code, the breaking of anyone of which would make the sinner unclean and unacceptable to God. It is an abomination to eat pork, etc. The law is no longer in effect and its purpose was to show that man could never follow it. The sins of Sodom and Gomorrah, likewise have nothing to do with homosexuality.
Romans 1:26-27 mentions homosexual acts performed by people who are clearly described as heterosexual. The men in the NT patriarchal culture exerted dominance not only over women, but over younger males as well. The nature of homosexual acts in the Bible are so very different from what we know as homosexuality today that the passages have no application to today's homosexuality. Such practices as in NT times simply no longer exist. Alleged references to homosexuality in I Corinthians and I Timothy are the inventions of anti-gay translators. They are not in the original Greek texts."

Waggy has been shown all this before and refuses to address it. I posted several links to studies about the mis-translation of the bible and he pretended it didn't happen. He's got a blind spot in this area and I think he enjoys stirring the pot. I wish we could do selective blocking so I could block him only in threads that mention homosexuality.

You are either completely dilusional, or that's a bold faced lie. The next time you post a link To Anything, will be the first. Let's see something, or STFU.

Plus, believing word for word the rules of a dumb book that is thousands and thousands of years old is insane whether it's translated correctly or not.

So what is the church based on? Rumors? Does it have a foundation? Do you pick and choose?

Yeah it's based on those words but to not adapt with the times or makes changes when things prove to be batshit insane is a church I want no part of. Again, do you you follow every rule/law from the Old Testament? I'm going to go out on a limb and say no.
I do pick and choose because quite frankly I think that the church is flat out wrong on many things. If that no longer makes me catholic, then shucks, I guess I'm no longer catholic.
Also, homosexuality is a huge social issue that the church has been dealing with lately. Why? It makes no sense to me. Catholics, and other Christians, are so worried about the practices of homosexuality, which does not affect Christians, Catholics, or their main teachings at all. It's such a small drop in the bucket of the so called "sins" one could commit but it gets so much more attention. Christians get all worked up about issues when they should be more worried about other issues that do affect things, i.e. pedophilia (oh wait, the church screwed that up), poverty (oh wait, the church sits on more God damned money than anyone), loving other people (oh wait, the church gets more and more divisive with who is and is not a sinner each day).

If you can't pick and choose, a lot of fundamentalists here in the South who hate the gays but love some barbque pork are in deep kimchi.
Side note: have you ever noticed the politicians/preachers who are the most strident "anti-something" are most often just that thing they are anti?
